Final Exhibition
These are some photos of the exhibition all finished and ready for opening. It was really good to see it all finished and set up.
Stories Promo
On the day of opening, we got a little help with the promotion of our event from Shannon posting on the School of Art instagram. Then I think that me sitting there throughout the day really helped encourage a lot of people to come through, we all kept the opening going until around 2pm, but throughout the rest of the day I was able to keep doing work at the desk there and talked to a few different lecturers, groups of students going by, and people heading to the Banter and Brews event next door that was on that evening. Then on Saturday I made a post to my personal instagram story (seeing as there was the potential to reach a few more people than we had on our groups one), and then reposted on our group exhibition’s page too. I also created a post to our event, and then shared it through our page - again to reach as many people as possible.
Weirdly, the doors for the block were not open - so I was having to keep an eye out for potential visitors and let them in. Hopefully no one was missed but this was a bit of a hindrance to the exhibition. I think overall I saw about 15 or so more visitors on opening day, and maybe 10 on Saturday - which was mostly people I had talked to online from the instagram posts.
Excitingly, Karl was very interested in our concept - he really liked the idea of essentially walking through a book and brought other staff through to see the installation and was keen for it to be adapted for open day to show potential future students that if they can do the simple stuff at the start, they would be capable of reaching the “shiny” end product, rather that just seeing the end-products alone which can be quite intimidating. What an exciting idea!
Exhibition Opening
I took some photos during our opening on Thursday. It was interesting seeing how everyone engaged in the space and the reactions from everyone. Pretty much, everyone we talked to really liked the exhibition. A lot of people seemed to like the audio in the background and didn’t realise at first that is was audio and not that actual sound. Not everyone walked through as we planned but they still got the experience from looking at the pages and diamond shape.
FOOD!
On day two of setup (Thursday - also opening day), I started in the morning by going to get more glasses and bringing in those and some bowls for serving things, and then bused to the supermarket and back to get all of our food, some ice, and drinks (BOY, they were heavy!). Then reset the tables to best fit what we were serving, as well as the complete workbooks we were showcasing.
Thanks to Countdown again for agreeing to sponsor us with a voucher! This pretty much covered everything we bought :D
I think by the time I was back with the food, the others had managed to finish installing the final diamond and were just doing some last minute adjustments on the hanging pages.
Large Format Printing + Setup
For day one of setup, I got to uni at 9am to give myself plenty of time to figure out the setup and operation for the large format printer (being that it had been some time since I used it last), and to allow for mistakes to still be able to meet the group at the arranged time of 12:30. I was waiting for the printer for a little while and then there was some troubleshooting that had to occur with loading the paper, as having brought in our own roll I had to set it up a little differently. Once the printing started though, everything was fairly straightforward. I ended up deciding to leave a little headway a the top and bottom of the pages so that there was space for the string to go through.
Once that was done, I brought the pages rolled up over to block 12 at about 12, and spent about the next hour clearing out the current furniture from previous users of the space (and set their stuff up nicely next door so it was still accessible for them if needed), so once the others arrived we were all clear to start installing the exhibition. We went home not long after 7pm, so about a 10 hour day for day one :o
Very productive though and we got the majority of the setup complete - which was great!
Thursday set up
The first thing we wanted to get done was to put the last diamond up. We sorted that then started on the finishing touches. We still had to do the vinyl, tie the last dowels onto the bottom and sort food. Morghan, Thomas and I got there at 8:30 to make sure we had enough time to sort everything well Mackenzie went and got all the food from the supermarket. We got everything done around 11 then all we had to sort was the food. As a group, we were proud of how it came out and all the hard work we put in to set up.
Wednesday set up
Set up was a long process. On the Wednesday we spend 6-7 hours setting up. There were a lot of different tasks to be done and we all had different ones we were doing to make the process quicker. The first things to be sorted were organising what pages were going into each column and cutting all the thread. Next, we needed the holes to be poked into the paper and to start threading the thread through the paper. After that, we started tieing the columns to the dowel and fixing the gaps to make sure everything was even and straight. Then we tired the clamps to the dowel and were able to start hanging the diamonds. The last steps were tieing the dowels to the bottoms and making sure everything was aligned and straight. By the time we left on Wednesday, we had the big prints plus three out of four of the diamonds hung. This left us in a good spot to finish everything else Thursday morning.
Thomas and I went over to the 3D workshop to get some vinyl and do the vinyl cutting for the words going on the ground. Thomas had set up the file and had luckily used the vinyl cutter before. We decided to use vinyl as it would be the cleanest way to have the words on the ground for each section of the double diamond.
Final Audio
This is the final audio that will be used for our exhibition. It will just be background noise but will add another element to the exhibition. It will hopefully make the viewers feel like they are inside a workbook/working environment.
Audio
I put together all the sounds Morghan and I recorded a bit ago. We wanted to include the noises that are involved in the design process in the background of our exhibition. These noises were: writing with a pen and pencil, pen clicking, highlighting, scissors, paper being ripped, paper being screwed up, eating snacks, the printer, the guillotine, getting up from your chair, rubbish being put in the bin, mouse clicks and scrolling and work being pinned up.
A Test a few days before the setup
We did a big test the Sunday before our exhibition to test the diamond shape and then hanging. Since it was at uni we were able to test it in the actual space which was good in terms of working out spacing and how much room we had. Having already made piles of the four sections definitely made our lives easier. We started making the diamond shape on the ground to see how it would look and how many A4s and A3s we needed in each column. We then started threading through the thread and tieing the columns to the dowels. We then put one diamond up using the clamps. We didn’t get the measurements quite right at first and the middle column was on the ground. Luckily all we had to do was adjust everything and it was fine. Doing this test meant we knew the gap we had to have between each page to make sure none of them were too low or too high. As a group, we were really happy with how the hanging turned out and had a full plan of how it would work for set up on Wednesday.
I was in charge of the Instagram and sorting the pictures for it since I was doing all the documentation. Mackenzie did a couple of posts but I did most of them. I also used a lot of hashtags to try and get it out to as many people as possible.
Photos for the publication of each stage of the double diamond. In order: discover, define, develop and deliver.
Wall Plaque
Much like the publication the wall plaque was fairly quick to design as the style was so well established already. similar techniques were used. Again Morghan wrote the text and proofread it before Mackenzie printed it on the large format printer in the spatial block.
Requirements Form
I have sent away the Requirements form sent to us by Moana. Hopefully, this will mean that we can get the doors unlocked for our open times in the weekend.
Social Media Campaign
A sample of the posts and promotions we’ve been making on social media - we have a Facebook page, event and an Instagram to reach as many people from the audience as possible.
