Friday Links: Five Men Who Disappeared Without a Trace

Damien Nettles (16) vanished in 1996, after a night out in the Isle of Wight. Witnesses that saw him that night mentioned he looked spaced out and he was behaving strangely. An informant told police that Damien was killed by a drug dealer, but there’s no real evidence to support that.

Logan Schiendelman (20) was last seen on May 19, 2016. His car was found abandoned in the interstate between Tumwater and Maytown, in Washington, with his wallet, ID and cellphone inside. A witness said he’d seen a man jumping out of the car through the passenger side and running into the woods, and later someone checked in his Facebook account at the airport.

Michael Golub (27) disappeared in the middle of a nasty custody battle with his ex over their son Mikey. On May 20, 2003, Michael headed to his ex’s house to pick up the toddler and was never seen again. The ex claims Michael never arrived, but his blood was later found in her front porch. It’s assumed he’s dead, but his remains have never been recovered.

Brandon Lawson (26) went missing the night of August 9, 2013, after calling his brother to tell him he’d ran out of gas and was stuck in the highway, and then making a very bizarre and almost unintelligible call to 911. When help arrived, they found Brandon’s car, cellphone and keys, but no sign of him.

Lars Mittank (28) was a German man on vacation in Bulgaria when he disappeared in July of 2014. The days previous to his vanishing were full of strange behavior and the last sighting of him, through a security camera, shows him running in panic towards the woods.

This is a photo of Rhoda Derry in an insane asylum. Rhoda was born to a well-heeled farming family and grew up a healthy, normal girl, but her life took an unexpected and tragic turn once she reached the tender age of 16 and began dating a boy from a neighboring farm. The boy’s parents were highly against the couple and threatened to curse Rhoda with witchcraft if she continued to see their son. The threat alone was enough to instigate a mental breakdown, and she became convinced that she was being haunted by a spirit named ‘’Old Scratch.’’ Rhoda wound up at the Adams County Poor House, where she stayed and was treated inhumanely for 40 years. For many years, she lived in a straw-lined basket and would sit with her knees clutched to her body for so long that her muscles became atrophied and she could no longer move her legs. She was later moved to a wooden box and, with her long nails, scratched her own eyes until she blinded herself, then punched her teeth out of her mouth. Rhoda eventually lost the ability to speak.

Michele Avila (left) and Karen Severson grew up together in Los Angeles. The girls had been best friends since they were 8-years-old, but once they entered high school, the two drifted apart as Michele grew in popularity and began spending more time with boys, which fueled Karen’s budding jealousy. Drama began brewing between the two former best friends when Karen spread rumors that Michele had been sleeping around with several boys, which resulted in Michele getting beaten up by a group of girls who accused her of having sex with their boyfriends. During their junior year, Michele began a relationship with a boy named Randy, but Michele broke it off a month later. Shortly after, Karen started dating Randy. On one occasion, Karen witnessed her boyfriend pulling Michele onto his lap. Karen was so infuriated by what happened that the two later got into a physical altercation at the park. On October 2, 1985, Michele was picked up by her school mate Laura Doyle, Karen, and a third teenager, and was driven out to a mountain stream in Angeles National Forest. There, she was confronted by Laura and Karen who accused her of sleeping with her boyfriends. The confrontation escalated into violence when they beat her up, tore out chunks of her hair, and forcibly shoved her head into an 8-inch stream, essentially drowning her. In the aftermath of the murder, the girls attended her funeral and sent her mother a sympathy card. Michele’s mother had no reason to suspect that the girl whom she knew since she was a child was actually the responsible for her daughter’s murder.

The case remained unsolved until 1988, when the truth finally came out. Karen and Laura were both convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison. They have since been released.

Very rarely do we hear about kidnap victims escaping alive, and those very same victims sympathizing with their captors. Such is the case of Natascha Kampusch, who was abducted at the age of 10 on March 2, 1998, in Vienna, Austria. Her kidnapper, Wolfgang Přiklopil, confined her in a small cell beneath the garage. The hidden room was dark, soundproof, and had no windows. For the first six months of her captivity, Natascha was barred from ever leaving her chamber, but slowly, she was granted permission to spent time upstairs only when her captor was home. Every night, she was sent back to her chamber. On a typical day, the two would get up early each morning and eat breakfast together. Natascha spent much of her time cleaning and cooking for her captor, and her favourite pastimes were reading, listening to the radio, and watching television, although she was only allowed to watch taped programs and listen to foreign stations so she could not be aware of the nationwide search for her. As punishment, Přiklopil would beat the young girl so badly that she was unable to walk and starve her, threatening to kill her if she ever tried to escape. Often, Natascha fantasized about chopping his head off with an ax. Shortly after her 18th birthday, she was allowed to go out in public with Přiklopil but was warned she would be killed if she tried to attract attention. They even went on a skiing trip at a resort where Natascha claimed she had no opportunity to escape. But finally, on August 23, 2006, that opportunity arrived. While the pair were in the backyard washing his car, Přiklopil stepped away to take a phone call. Quickly she made her escape, running through streets and jumping over fences and calling for help. She was promptly brought to the police station and Přiklopil, knowing for sure the police were looking for him, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. After eight years of captivity, Natascha was finally free.

Natascha cried profusely upon learning her captor was dead. She seemed to sympathize with him, even lighting a candle for him at the morgue. She stated she felt ‘’more and more sorry for him’’ and referred to him as a ‘’poor soul’’. Many psychologists proposed she was suffering from Stockholm syndrome. However, Natascha strongly rejected this diagnosis, saying that it’s disrespectful and disallows her to reflect on and talk about the complex bond she shared with her kidnapper. Today, she is now a spokesperson for the animal rights group, PETA.

In January of 1982, a young man perched himself on the roof of a building in Los Angeles. As he prepared to jump from the building, Muhammad Ali’s public relations manager spotted him. He saw the officers trying to talk him down. He got straight on the phone to the heavyweight champion who rushed to the scene and climbed up the stairs to the suicidal man.

The young man told Ali that he was a “nobody.” He relayed that he couldn’t find a job, that he was depressed, and that his mother and father didn’t love him and that nobody loves him. Ali responded by telling him that he wasn’t a nobody that that “I love him or I wouldn’t be there.” Ali told the young man that if he came down, he would help him go to school, find him a job and meet his parents and convince them that their son wasn’t a nobody. “You’re my brother, I love you and I wouldn’t lie to you,” Ali said, before offering him to come home with him and meet his friends.

The young man agreed and climbed down from the ledge with the assistance of Ali. “Everyday I’m going to visit him in the hospital. I told him I’d stay close to him,” said Ali.

The ‘’Alphabet Murders’’ took place in the Rochester, New York, area. during the early 70s. All three victims, between the ages of 10-11, lived eerily similar lives; they each came from single parent households, were Roman Catholic, and had learning disabilities. They were abducted in the afternoon and sexually assaulted before being strangled. Their bodies were found in cities outside of Rochester with the same initial as their first and last names: Carmen Colon near Churchville, Michelle Maenza in Macedon, and Wanda Walkowicz in Webster. Meanwhile, in California, similar double-initial murders were occurring. All the victims were prostitutes and had the same first and last initials. In 2011, Joseph Naso, 77, was arrested for the murders. He was a professional photographer who traveled extensively between New York and California over the decades. He was convicted of the murders in California and sentenced to death. However, the Alphabet Murders case in New York remains open.

Vincent van Gogh’s last words were “La tristesse durera toujours”, which translates to “The sadness will last forever.” He had shot himself in the chest at the age of 37, although had managed to walk back to the Auberge Ravoux, where two doctors tended to him, but were unable to remove the bullet. He uttered his last words to his brother before his death.
