“Hello there dear. Please excuse my indelicacy, but might I ask who you are and how I know you? I’m afraid I’ve lost quite the lot of my memory. You seem to possess a familiar spirit though.”

“It seems you’ve been suffering a case of amnesia, doctor. I’m Magdalena Valerious, we’ve worked together before. How much of  your past do you remember?”

“I don’t remember a thing, no childhood, no family or friends. It’s quite horrifying. Since we’ve worked together, perhaps you could help me piece together what exactly as has happened to me? Or perhaps you know of a way to help regain my memories?”

I followed the directions that I left to myself, out of the forest, and across a pasture. I came upon a city, large, and full of things and people I didn’t recognize. It was quite overwhelming

Seeing the strangeness of society through the cloudy front window of his shop is truly a day to day occurrence for Wes. However, seeing strangeness anywhere else still throws him for a loop. Here he is, on vacation, minding his own goddamn business, and some guy in clothing directly out of the nineteenth century just walked past him looking damn near shell shocked. Wes is a curious guy, and this guy practically reeks of interesting, so with a mumbled excuse to Sabella, who’s half through a bottle of wine that came with lunch and eyeing Zeb like he’s a particularly delicious snack, he dashes out the door and towards the strange man, who is staring at someone holding their phone like it’s a goddamn miracle.

“Hey! Scuse me, sir? Are you alright?” Wes calls, drawl in his voice drawing attention from passerby to them both.

Vernon was reeling at his surroundings when he heard the voice call out, grounding him. The words were English but the accent was unfamiliar. He turned to face the calling voice, and was greeted with a man towering in height. He looked up at the man, flustered for a moment. He stammered,

“Oh, pardon me but may I ask the date? I’ve found myself in an interesting situation and– I’m sorry I should introduce myself. My name is Vernon, I believe”

Vernon laughed nervously as he rambled on. He couldn’t seem to stop himself from speaking.

“I hate to be a bother, but might I also ask where we are? My memory escapes me as of late. Oh, I haven’t even asked your name, please forgive me. Hello”

I woke from a strange dream, almost nightmarish. It may have been a memory, however, the dream was quickly forgotten in favor of more pressing matters: hunger. I had a voracious appetite. I ransacked the kitchen for anything edible and found a jar of honey which was quickly consumed.

Then, I remembered the garden. After my walk, I had noticed a wildly unkept garden behind the house. I went to it, praying that there was something to be salvaged. To my relief, there was.

After eating, I pondered my next course of action. There were many matters to attend to, all equally bewildering. I decided to take a walk to clear my mind, and perhaps to investigate the glow that I had witnessed last night.

“Good morning”

Night had fallen over the course of my cleaning. I went to close the windows before I retired to sleep, when I noticed a peculiar glow through the trees. It seemed to be in walking distance, but in my state of mind I could never make it.

I scrambled for a scrap paper and scribbled a note marking the location of the glow. I might be able to investigate after a deep rest.

The house was small and entirely swamped with dust. Every rustle of papers billowed thick clouds which brought onslaughts of sneezing fits. My lungs, I had discovered, did not work so well. I picked up a broom that I found and began to clear the worn floorboards. Then I opened the windows for ventilation, and I’ll admit, to marvel at the forest that surrounded me.

I dusted the shelves, which were full of specimens; jars full of chemicals, yellowed with age. I wondered, exactly how long had I been suspended? From the state of the house, one could assume that quite a lot of time had elapsed. The papers I’d read so far were dated from 1834 to 1840. I sighed

“I don’t even know how old I am.”

My voice rasped when I spoke. I thought deeply, what was the last memory I had? Surely I had been a child at some point. A child with a family, a mother, and father, and perhaps a brother or sister.

The thought didn’t last long, as I came across a room with a locked door. I pushed with all of my strength but the door did not budge. There must be a key, I thought, but my head hurt and my bones ached and I was far too tired to think much more about it.

“A deep cleaning is in order.”

Back at home, I prepared myself to tackle the mountains of papers scattered about. I hoped that something would jog my memory, or at least give some context surrounding my current situation.

“Where to start?” I wondered aloud, as I dusted off a stack of books.

I picked up a journal concerning the composition of water, it was fully annotated with notes of my own. Notes concerning the properties of water, and water as it relates to cells. I found reports on the experiments performed by John Hunter and James Curry. Retellings of the hanging of Anne Green. I dove deeper into notes and began to put together the story of a man in frantic search of some form of suspended animation. Suspended animation through freezing temperatures, it seems. And this man, I suppose, was me.

“That would explain this incessant chill” I said to no one in particular.

“Through investigating my surroundings, I have learned that was called Vernon. Vernon Delmont, a graduate of medicine, a practicing physician, surgeon, and apothecary. Quite the record, I’ll have to read more of these notes”

“Pages upon pages upon stacks of incoherence, diagrams, tables and data. The more I read, the less I understand.”

“How long have I been asleep? This residence has fallen into ruin, every surface coated in thick layers of dust. These walls are quickly becoming oppressive and I am in desperate need of air. The sun should ease the chill trapped in these old bones”

The house is surrounded by dense forest. My lungs burn, and my muscles tired quickly from apparent disuse. I will have to venture further next time.

Pages upon pages upon stacks of incoherence, diagrams, tables and data. The more I read, the less I understand.

How long have I been asleep? This residence has fallen into ruin, every surface coated in thick layers of dust. These walls are quickly becoming oppressive and I am in desperate need of air. The sun should ease the chill trapped in these old bones.
