My Little One actually made it all the way through bedtime tonight, only falling asleep three times during our ritual. To be fair, she watched three whole episodes of Friends with me, which was impressive with how late we started. Anyways, after songs and goodnight kisses, my little sleepy head asked me for a favor…

It’s always the same one: “Will you read me a story?” Now, if you recall, she had fallen asleep three times during our routine. There was no way she was going to make it even halfway through the story. Still, her favorite thing is falling asleep to the sound of my voice, so of course I agreed. I always read the entire story, no matter how quickly she falls asleep, just to be sure.

Whether or not she would ever know, she asked me to read the story. Finishing it, even if it means reading over her snores or pausing to listen to her little moans (she moans in her sleep, and I never know if she’s awake or not so I always listen), is just one way I demonstrate to her that she can depend on me. She needs to know that I will do what I say, even if she isn’t around to know the difference.

No matter how silly the request or how inconsequential it may seem to you, it’s the little things that build trust in the relationship. If you drop the ball on something small, how can you be trusted with something big? Everyone always thinks about the big moments in a relationship as being the make or break moments, but in reality it’s the daily choices that we make.

Championship teams aren’t made on the field. They’re made in the weight rooms, film rooms, and on the track. It’s the two-a-day practices and the hundreds of times running the same play until you can execute it perfectly every time. There may not be any glory in these moments, and each individual day might seem pretty boring and monotonous, but when it’s game day, you find out how glad you are that you practiced so hard. The hardships you endure under the bright lights in front of the screaming fans are nothing compared to what you’ve already been through as a team.

Show each other you can be counted on for the little things. Be there for every silly little favor and demonstrate that you are someone who can be depended upon. Deepen your connection by showing up every single time without fail. Anyone who can’t keep up with the little things can’t be trusted with the big things.
