Please Be Patient

Please be patient with autistics. People are frequently frustrated and annoyed by certain things I do, but it doesn’t help me communicate better. In fact, it makes me anxious and therefore I LOSE my ability to communicate effectively.

Autistics may:

1. Ask simple questions that you see as unnecessary. You may assume we should just be able to figure it out on our own, but we are just trying to understand you & the situation better.

2. Pause or stumble over our words when answering questions. You expect a quick answer but we need time to process what you’re asking and formulate our response.

3. Give lengthy explanations for things. We aren’t trying to waste your time, we’re just concerned we won’t be understood so we have to say things just right.

4. Have difficulty understanding what you’re feeling. A lot of us don’t read cues like expressions, tone of voice, and body language very well. You may have to spell it out for us. We aren’t being insensitive, we just need you to help us understand.

5. Fail to regognize jokes and sarcasm. We take things very literally sometimes, but it doesn’t mean that we’re stupid so please don’t talk down to us. If we don’t realize you’re joking, just gently point out that you aren’t serious and we’ll get it!
