On these episodes, we'll take an in-depth look into the career of a particular filmmaker or movie house, production company ... as we've said before, the rules are made up and the points don't matter. We trace the trajectory of said career from their first feature film through to their last if they're deceased, or their most recent if they're still kicking. This week we took a look at the backyard splatter king of excess, the mastermind adaptor of (some) Tolkein: Sir Peter Jackson! We go from Bad Taste (1987) through to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). The Majestic 600 With the Upside-Down ‘S’

Today I bought my first typewriter. A turquoise Majestic 600 in pristine working order, but in need of a thorough cleaning. For whatever reason, the “S” key has been turned upside-down and replaced upon its peg. I’d been thinking about investing in a typewriter for years, and, while doing some hunting at Value Village for another project I’m working on, found this little gem for $14.99. Just 24 hours before I’d been professing how desperately I needed to search for a typewriter to start exploring other sides of my writing.

This is the first thing I wrote on the old girl. Nothing too special, but it brings a lot to mind. The deliberate nature of typewriters reminds me that pinkies are largely obsolete in the typing process, and that I’ve forgotten all the lessons I was taught in typing lessons in elementary school (despite being able to type incredibly fast.) The hope is that this may bring something out in me that the pen and my laptop have yet to be able to. 

I guess we’ll see.

It’s essentially obsolete technology in the age of computers. Twitter and Facebook dominate online media ... methods of regulating every thought that crosses our minds at the drop of a hat. We dain [sic] to think that every thought, like every child these days, is a unique, special little snowflake. This is not reality. Nor is it the truth. Words used to take legitimate time and skill to get out on paper. Effort was required not only to think of what you wanted to say, but to commit it to the page. No wonder literature has changed since the technological advancements of the digital age.

My Self-Doubt

I assume I’m not the first person on the planet to endure crippling self-doubt. To have something crop up that altogether cripples you intellectually, makes you question every word out of your mouth, and forces you into a state of redundancy within your own life. In a word, it blows.
