“Well, I’m not sure exactly.” She shrugged, “Maybe it’s a trustworthy face, I’m not sure.”

“...or the freckles” he chuckled and shook his head at the bad joke he made.

“That’s always a good mindset to start off with, it can get overwhelming at times,” she admitted slightly. “Of course I would, I always love to help out a soon to be teacher. Plus, if you’re going to survive this place, you’re going to need plenty of help,” she joked, with a slight hint of seriousness.

“Oh...s-so...is harder than what Charles told me? oh, boy” he chuckled nervously and smiled at her. “Thank you. I know I could use a lot of help”

“I don’t do it for just anyone but I think you’re special enough” she said smiling fondly at him. “I remember the excitement leading up to finding out powers. My father passed out when I teleported into the kitchen from my bedroom for breakfast when I was 12. None of us really knew Sawyer’s power until we figured out that he was manipulating sounds and used it to learn guitar. What’s your power Derek?” She found herself moving even closer to this handsome and intriguing man.

“I am?” he said as bit surprised. He had never considered himself special if you forgot his power. “Oh...I can see the future...” he shrugged. “Is really confusing sometimes but it’s...helpful”

He chuckled and shrugged. “I guess…b-because I’ve always looked kind of harmless. That could be too”

“I don’t think it’s that…” She shrugged, glancing down.

“Then why would it be?”

“I’m probably going back on the weekend if you’re free? A perk of travelling with me is that you don’t have to pay for flights,” her face lit up as she laughed at her own bad joke. “I really don’t have a talent, you do not want to hear me sing my version of Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’, it’s a fate worse than death and I cannot willingly subject you to that torture” she said, still giggling all through the sentence. “8 siblings?! Tell me more, you’re really a tough cookie to crack Derek.”

He raised an eyebrow and smiled widely. “Really? would you really do that? It would be amazing” he said in awe and laughed as she mentioned her singing. “It’s okay...I’ve never been a singer or a dancer” he blushed a little and shook his head. “Well...that’s-tht’s because there’s not much to say...We are 7 kids. My brother Warren is assisting college here and so are some of my brothers. Mily though...she’s too young for that. We haven’t even found out what kind of power does she have. We are all curious about because we are not sure what she’ll get.”

“I do, though I’m not all that sure why.” She admitted, “I suppose because hearing thoughts makes you a fairly good judge of character, even when you’re trying not to listen. Tone is important.”

“It’s beautiful, and best at night! I’ll show you around sometime,” she smiled. “No, dad wanted me to learn how to control my powers and I don’t have any talent except for my powers. It’s just Sawyer and I, I’m thankful for that. What about you? Any siblings?”

He smiled and nodded. “That would be fantastic, actually.” he nodded. “It makes sense...I mean not the-the part about not having talents, I’m sure you have...the-the part of focusing on your powers, I meant...” he chuckled nervously and scoffed as she mentioned siblings. “Oh...you’ll be surprised. We are 8 siblings...7 boys, 1 little girl”

“Well, I’m from the Upper West Side in New York, dad is a CEO of a huge talent agency and my brother Sawyer is a musician. Mum left when I was 4 but dad was incredible with Sawyer and I,” she said with a small smile that she only had when talking about her family, “otherwise, there’s not much to say.”

“Oh...I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live in New York” he confessed. “You didn’t follow your father and brother footsteps I believe” he said with a small smile. “And it’s just your brother and you, right? you don’t have...any other sibling?”

He smiled. “It does make sense. I guess Is a nice way of getting everything together. Besides, working with kids is always wonderful”

She nodded, “But like I said, no one knows. My parents wouldn’t like it and… I don’t know, I just don’t talk to people about it much. Except you, now… I guess…”

“its...it’s okay!” he said with a soft smile. “I won’t go arond and tell everybody. You can...you can trust me”

“Oh…n-no” he shook his head. “I’ve been here for a while but I’m-I’m starting my internship here w-well…next semester officially” he said with a excited smile. “I’ll be teaching…history, if I’m not mistaken”

“Oh wow, that’s great. Are we excited to begin teaching?” She asked with a smile. “I teach English and Defense, myself, so I’m not sure how much help i’ll be in history but I can give you a few teaching pointers if you like?”

“I...I am r-really excited, actually.” The boy said with a smile. “and the subject I’ll be teaching is my all time favorite so is a great opportunity for me” he chuckled. “Would you really? oh, that would be a-amazing! thank you so much”

“Oh…n-n-no…is not your fault…ah, I’m always like this is not—is not your fault. I won’t…I won’t leave if you don’t-don’t want me to”

“Oh...” he blushed even more. “I...then....t-then I won’t” he smiled nervously and stretched his arm, offering his hand for her to shake. “I’m Derek...h-hi”

“Handsome, indeed, and very much so,” Lorelei confirmed. “Why thank you,” she said with her sly smirk as she nodded. “So are you new around here, Derek?”

“Oh...n-no” he shook his head. “I’ve been here for a while but I’m-I’m starting my internship here w-well...next semester officially” he said with a excited smile. “I’ll be teaching...history, if I’m not mistaken”

She smiled, “My family doesn’t know, but since my powers developed, I’ve been volunteering at an orphanage. Their thoughts are more innocent and… it’s calmer.”

“They are!” She continued to smile, “so where are you from Derek, tell me about yourself.”

“A-about myself?” he said as his cheeks turned bright pink. He didn’t like it when the spotlight was on him like that. “Uhm..I’m..I’m from aroundhere.” he said awkwardly “And I…I work as an intern teacher in…in sky high…there’s there’s not a lot about me that is worth mentioning” he added with a chuckle.

“You can’t tell me that there’s nothing interesting about you Derek!” She reached out to place her hand on his arm, “would you rather it if I told you something about me first?”

As the girl reached for his arm, Derek blushed even more. “I’m...” he cleared his throat” That’d be...nice.”he said with a nervous smile.

Amber couldn’t think what to say, exactly. She was embarrassed about how honest she was being int he conversation, as she wasn’t really one to talk about how her powers affected her. Still, she kept telling him things she wouldn’t normally say. “I’d like to think I’ve made the best of it…” She admitted.

“I think you have” he said with a gentle smile as she let go of her. “I mean...I haven’t had the pleasure to know you from a long time but by the way you interact with people, I can say you’ve made the best of everything” he smiled.

“They are!” She continued to smile, “so where are you from Derek, tell me about yourself.”

I’d probably liked to be...Nikolas Tesla. He was such an outstanding man.
