Something I cannot stress enough:

“School comes first” teachers say, when talking about sports or other after school activities, but YOU come BEFORE school. You may have a pile of work that has to be done for the next day, but if you’re sitting there, unable to think, on the brink of tears, hands shaking, you forget about school. So what you get a 47% on your test, or you don’t complete your assignment. Your health, mental and physical, ALWAYS come first. You put on your favourite Disney, get a bunch of junk food, and chill. Give yourself a break. Go to bed and get some sleep. The teachers, they might not understand. They may not give you an extra day to finish your assignments or allow you to write the test the next day, but at least you will be okay. School is important, but you far more important than it will ever be.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear or embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away at the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. If you know someone who's depressed please resolve never to ask them why. Depression isn't a straightforward response to a bad situation, depression just is, like the weather. Try to understand the blackness, lethargy, hopelessness and loneliness they're going through. Be there for them when the come through the other side. It's hard to be a friend to someone who's depressed, but it is one of the kindest, noblest and best things you will ever do.
