Dope question.
I remember one time I was in a tunnel, and I found a REVS roller. It said “None Of This Matters…” And that depressed the fuck out of me. I couldn’t imagine spending so much time at something for it not to matter. And how could REVLON, the GOD, say something like that? And put it in writing?!? I was crushed.
Then I turned a corner or maybe I went into the next tunnel, when I found the rest of the roller: “… But Is Very Necessary.”
I almost cried tears of joy. It is necessary. It shakes shit up just the right amount, it gives the oppressed and silenced a voice, and it’s a gentle reminder that they cannot possibly control everything/everyone, and if you’re like me and have a little anxiety about the way things are going in the world with the current police state and global issues, that’s a really comforting sight to see. The potential of graffiti is infinite, whether you choose to use it for self-fulfillment reasons like just getting a name up, or whether U do it for other, broader reasons like bringing awareness or protesting, U can do literally anything with it as long as you have a little heart. And that’s a pretty dangerous thought if you considered what could happen if executed a certain way.
It is absolutely necessary. It’s raw and unregulated in the best of ways, and it may not be what you want but it’s always what you need; and you may not agree with that but just consider the implications of a graffiti-free world. I don’t know that I would want to live in a place so sterile and micromanaged and generic; it leaves no room for individuality or cultivation as a people’s or forward thinking… No room for creativity. No room for CHANGE.
Graffiti means so much more than just applying a medium to a surface, than just a writing on a wall. It’s much much bigger than that, therein lies the value.
Thanks for the question! thezetaupstairs
