Both hackers and antivirus makers were put on notice last week when two shining stars in the $67 billion worldwide cyber-security universe announced their merger. Milpitas, Calif.-based global network security company FireEye has acquired Washington, D.C.-based cyber-security firm Mandiant, which released a famous report last year about a Chinese military [...]

2013 the year of the #CloudBroker? @ComputeNext predicts this sector will produce $20B in revenues for cloud services by 2015. What is a Cloud Broker ? @Yasin36 reports on @Kevin_Jackson 10 predictions for #Cloud and why Cloud Brokers took the #7 spot: 7. Organizations will rapidly adopt cloud services brokerages. Cloud services brokerage and cloud access security brokers are emerging as vital and complementary services. IT departments currently are struggling to learn these skills internally or partnering externally for these services. Management tools for this multi-sourcing environment are essential. To best deal with the new paradigm of hybrid IT, government security policies also will need to be reviewed and updated to manage the transition from infrastructure-centric to data-centric security postures.

Privacy vs Security: Will encryption help Google and other Clouds save face after #Snowden ?
Nowadays privacy is a big topic in Cloud Computing... but does encryption really help? I'm guessing Google's automated encryption announcement may put many companies at ease but I can't help but notice that the difference between data security and data privacy is blurred. The reason Snowden's revelation was so "shocking" to some was related to the privacy of data, not its security ( the technology that protects it). Is encryption where you aren't the only one with access to the key really protecting data privacy or just creating the illusion of privacy?
Privacy and security are not synonymous when it comes to data protection. Sure data that is encrypted can be protected from a random data breach, but data that can be decrypted by a key Google has access to is not fully protected from a privacy perspective. If for example that key was stolen or willingly forked over to a government body, encryption would offer no protection against data privacy. Take note that in this example no technology was breached or hacked into. Encryption can only protect your data against government spying if you are the only one with the encryption key...and you don't give out the key!
"We know that security is important to you and your customers. Our goal is to make securing your data as painless as possible," Google product manager Dave Barth.

Almost half of all e-mail is now opened on a smartphone, according to Yesmail. But when marketing messages are opened on a mobile phone, the reader takes action—buys something, clicks through, whatever—about half as often as when the message is opened on a desktop.

Startups succeed by leveraging #cloud, but admit cloud isn't the best long term path for all.
“When you’re lean and just getting started [cloud] is obviously the way to go...within IT departments, public clouds do tend to get more expensive over time, especially when you reach a certain scale.”
While the attached article did touch upon cost considerations and response times as downsides to long term cloud adoption, it did not touch upon the difficulties of moving away from a cloud. Breaking up with your cloud has a price tag- actual costs and time needed to move out of the cloud can add up.
Data lock-in is an issue many companies have faced and will continue to face ( whether you are in the cloud or using a legacy system). Thankfully there are solutions ( like @shuttlecloud @enstratus and @cloudvelocity ) that help manage content and application movement.
With more robust migration solutions companies will have greater freedom to take advantage of solutions that better meet the need of their business, whether that means using a hybrid cloud or on premise old school physical servers.

GCHQ Britain's spy agency coaxed companies who operate a large share of the high capacity undersea fibre-optic cables that make up the "back bone of the internet". This allowed the GCHQ and the NSA to access and search dat on the activity of millions of internet users.
Disturbingly for companies not involved..."Documents seen by the Guardian suggest some telecoms companies allowed GCHQ to access cables which they did not themselves own or operate, but only operated a landing station for." Over the last few months, we’ve made exciting changes to some of your favorite Yahoo! products, like Flickr, Mail, Weather, the Homepage and Search. Today, I’m excited to share with you our next big push: we want to give our loyal users and new folks the...
With Yahoo's renewed interest in recapturing a slice of the email market the opportunity to get better email "real-estate" is exciting and all... but is a better email address compelling enough to move providers and change my email address? For example, I have an aol.com email account ( I use it exclusively to receive marketing and newsletters) but lets say I actually did use and check my aol.com email on a daily basis and that I had all my important emails and contacts within it. Beyond the fact I could get a cooler email address at yahoo I would not be willing to make the move unless a combination of the following happened:
I was incentivized ( a free credit for something?)
I was offered a free, reliable and simple way to transfer my email and content
I didn't have to manage multiple accounts
I was given a compelling reason as to why I NEEDED another email address. Everyone knows me at #####%$%[email protected] why change my identity now and possibly run the risk of losing touch with my contacts?
