So, Bionicle’s over?
Again?
I’ve been wrapped up in getting ready for school and editing work, so, I kinda missed this.
I don’t think this is as impactful to me as to some. Which is weird, because I pretty much cried over G1’s end back in 2010. [Read: I did cry, but I’m only allowed to admit shedding tears over Matoro (as we all have)]
It’s just weird for me. I didn’t jump on the hype train, even though I was one of the first at the station. The leaks for G2 early on, almost the instant LEGO made the page, all the pre-planning, the news—I was with it. Then G2 actually came. Then G2 went.
I never ended up getting into any of G2. I mean, I haven’t even finished JTO, you guys. I don’t have a single set or book from the series.
Maybe I came in with higher hopes than I should have had…or maybe too many doubts. My cousin and I were elated by the news of Bionicle coming back! We thought there were few things more important for LEGO to do.
We saw the first sets, looked at the page. That was when he gave up hope. He wasn’t into the new designs, he hated the rehashing and reusing of old terms (it was a cash-in, as he saw it). As far as he was concerned, this was a cheap attempt at using an old and dedicated fandom for minimal profit.
I knew from the beginning that it wouldn’t be the same as G1, and that, for nostalgia or some other reason, I’d like G1 more. However, I hoped. I wanted to like this series, and I at least saw more potential in it than my cousin did. The designs were okay—nothing fantastic, but I liked them. I watched videos on it, read the lore LEGO let out.
I don’t think I was there with you guys, though. The hype people got over the webisodes, the hype for Journey to One, the hype for each new wave—I just wasn’t there.
Maybe it was because I had high hopes that weren’t being met. Maybe I had faint doubts reminiscent of what my cousin had from the beginning. Maybe it was just my attachment to G1.
But if there is one part where I’m with you, it’s where I’m with you. This community is great. Mata Nui, coming on to Tumblr on the heels of G2—brilliant time! So many mocs, so many new theories, just so many things! I will not say I understood the hype and happiness, or that I had it. Seeing you all happy, though, made me happy. It felt more active to me than ever.
So, I have some worries that as this ends, the community’s going to die down. Maybe others of you do too.
However, if Bionicle taught me anything, it’s unity, duty, and destiny. This community is tight-knit, and…man, are you guys supportive. Some of the most I’ve ever met.
That covers one virtue.
For some of you, you have to keep writing about Bionicle, drawing Bionicle, making mocs, or just running your blogs and posting some silly old memes.
That’s another virtue down.
The really hard part is to say what comes next. We don’t know. Unless any of us are Turaga or Ko-Matoran of the Knowledge Towers—well, I think we lack the ability to really predict what comes next. So who’s to say where the winding road of life leads us? Who’s to say if anything comes for Bionicle, or nothing at all?
So, it’s hard to say if we’ve got that third virtue covered. I’d like to think that whatever our destiny is, it’s a good one.
Here’s to us, Chroniclers. Here’s to the bonkers for Bonkles fans. Sorry G2 ended, if you were into it. I’ll still be here, reblogging your old theories, mocs, fics, and art.
