Wow, that is a truly huge number and a massive leap of achievement in only 5 years.
"For the first time, half of all adults in the United States said they used a social networking site, according to a survey released on Friday by the Pew Research Center.
That is 50 percent of all Americans, not just those who say they are online. Six years ago, when Pew first conducted a similar survey, only 5 percent of all adults said they used social sites, like Facebook, LinkedIn or MySpace."
An unfortunate end to an interesting social experiment.
Bleacher Report made a list of the top 50 most iconic sports commercials. As lists go, this one is debatable, subjective and has some themes. As much as we in the biz lean into culture to inspire our thinking we sometimes forget the impact the work we do can have on culture. Some of these spots are as much a part of the collective consciousness of a sports fan as some of his/her favorite games.
A couple of thoughts from this list:
Not all about that big superhero celebrity- Some of the one that really stood out to me where the ones that really humanize the athletes (Jordan failure, Nike football making NFL superstars just other guys on your team)
The diversity of emotions in sports- It's not all about raw athleticism, fierce competition and the final score, it also includes being human, being funny, being different, etc...
Non "sports brands"- This is good proof that you don't have to be a "sports brand" to make a great sports commercial. This can be applied to any brand trying to tap into different pieces of culture. That being said, while you don't have to be organically linked to that culture, you better understand it before you jump in.
Athletes as commercial talent- Athletes are best used in a way that is authentic to how we, fans, connect and relate to them. I think the one spot that should definitely not have been on this list is the Gillette "Staying Alive" spot with with Jeter, Federer and Woods. Although I have to admit, the surprising exception to this rule is Mastercard with Peyton Manning.
I love ideas that blend the digital world with the real world and this one does it in a very personal way.
Great presentation on Coke's Liquid & Linked strategy and how they embrace a paid, owned, earned, shared media model.
The research is still very nascent, and not nearly conclusive, but intuitively this feels hard to argue.
Interesting POV on how to use Klout.
The argument is that it is better to focus on your existing community first, and then use Klout to know whom to focus on within that community. It seems like a lot of marketers can be easily drawn in to the promise of an audience on a silver platter, and an influential one to boot, but the order in which they approach that audience may be out of whack.
I agree that, as a marketer, your priority should be on your existing community. It's far more effective to preach to the choir and make sure those with the loudest voices (and followers) are given extra special attention (and tools). That being said, it can't hurt to go after, and win over, new audiences. And if there is a tool to help you do that in an efficient way, why not?

Sesame Street Dubs the Beastie Boys
There something about this video that I love and that I can’t quite put my finger. So I’ll just state the obvious. This expertly synched video Dub features everyone’s favorite Sesame Street Muppets who have come and rock the Sure Shot. Made “for fun” by the British creative agency Wonderfully Creative, this video gives us a glimpse into what the Grover could be like sans his annoying monster voice. Yes, I said it. His voice is annoying. It doesn’t mean I love him any less. But seriously, how cool is Grover as Mike D?
Add this to a continuing trend of clients social media needs requiring the dedicated attention of its own agency, this one is to the tune of a 7-figure budget.
Interesting quote from the winning agency- Big Fuel, who has been on a roll- on their approach to this and how they are positioning their agency for these pitches:
"What we're really focused on is the social AOR for a complex client so this is right in our sweet spot," Mr. Bond said. He associated complex with "a lot of moving parts," including products, technology and agency collaboration. The overall idea for T-Mobile, he said, is to "martial social-media assets to create scale."

Great use of research.
ESPN created a fake product to determine the value of advertising on their network. By using a made up product they are able to circumvent the various additional factors that can affect people's affinity for an existing brand.
Or this is just proof that consumers can't be trusted in this kind of research...
I don't like to get into political debates so let's think about this from a marketing perspective.
No matter how you cut it, our country is divided very strongly when it comes to politics - I think this chart is very telling in how republicans and Democrats world views are so different.
So, it begs the question, if people are so different based on their political views, is it worth knowing what your brand's consumers political views are? It seems like there are some rich insights that can be had from such knowledge.
"Since 1975, median wages for two-parent homes have increased by 23 percent. But over that same period, the working hours of parents grew by 26 percent, largely because of women taking jobs outside the home. "
The sad truth of what is becoming more and more of an elusive American dream.
This is just another data point that goes under the constantly evolving roles of gender in the household, but it is also an indication of the lack of real wage increases that has shafted American workers.
The "recession" as defined by GDP may have ended sometime ago, but there is no doubt that it is still rough out there.
