The Interface Effect

This reading was something different for me. I found it a little above me and i was struggling to grasp it initially. I had seen the triple portrait before so this grabbed me. I had never known much about the image nor had i though of it as an interface illustration. But after reading i interpreted the image into the interfaces and it made sense. Each portrait is a different interface, each interface you are able to see more, and by seeing more you are able to understand more about it. Who he is, what he is doing, etc. Relate this back to our projects i assume this could be that if you only have 1 interface it would need to explain what you are doing, otherwise may you would need to think about adding other interfaces to explain what is happening so the viewer is able to gather all the information needed.

This text gave me a few ideas to go along side my AR idea.

Although this is not something you don't purchase but scan you still need to engage the interest of the consumer. It would be great to launch this and have it advertised etc, but like the text mentions it would be best to have reviews on sites such as lonely planet and the salzburg tourist site there they will be able to see that this exists and then also be convinced by the great reviews it will get! This then gives them comfort and anticipation to try this and go on the sound of music adventure. This also adds the 'wisdom of the crowd' that is also talked about. Later on it says to make this a personal thing, then people can express their own thoughts. This works out well because when people are expressing their though (hopefully positive) then other can read them and then use this. I could have a widget on the app to review or add comments about this and this could be posted onto Facebook/tourism websites etc for people to see. Then they feel as if they are getting heard as well as assuring others about this AR situation.

Cinematic Tour

I decided to go with the cinematic Sound of music tour.

With a town that accumulates 7million tourists each year this is a huge industry for the city of Salzburg. I can only think of 2 main reasons for this, Mozart and The Sound of Music.

Concept:

The concept for my idea is to have tourists make their own way around the town rather than jumping on a tour bus, the city of salzburg is rather small and by train or bus you can make it to most of the locations where the sound of music was filmed. I believe that making your own way around a city is a huge part in understanding the culture of the town.

Once the tourist is at one of the destinations they are able to scan the poster then scan the area on their phone and the scene that was filmed there would pop up on the phone as if you were watching them in real life. With this you can see the location in real life and in the film.

I would want this to be a very simple image, just the screen with the real life background and then the image from the film dancing onto so there are no distractions etc.

AR brainstorm

I began thinking about my AR project and after researching some videos on youtube for some inspiration as this is my first AR project it is a little hard to get my head around.

I know that in class it was said that typical Salzburg tourism ideas were not to be used such as mozart etc. But I had an idea that was with a typical Salzburg tourist attraction- the sound of music, but not in such a cheesy way.

I thought it would be cool that when you approached the locations where the movie was filmed and you put your phone up to the location the scene that was filmed there would appear on the screen within the location. This idea also seemed from the irish guys that came to visit . There idea is similar to this but the castle and they had games etc to be unlocked. I wouldn't have this approach but just the film on the screen.

With this the tourists could find their own way around the town instead of jumping on the expensive tour busses and then they can experience the town themselves. Each scene could lead you to the next.

Another idea which is more targeted to Lehen i was thinking about doing something with the library there. As the library is a new point of interest in the area. But i was thinking of why a tourist would be interested in going to a library as i have never searched for one when traveling.

One reason i could think of would to use the facilities such as the wifi to check emails/contact people etc. I thought of having the scannable poster outside the library and when scanned it would tell you where in the city of Salzburg there was free accessible wifi. As a poor traveller this is a huge influence on where we go for coffee/food and so if you know where all the wifi is it could be very helpful as well as getting people in and around the library.

I also thought of the art gallery in Lehen. I thought that you have to be an acknowledged artist in order to get your art work inside, and wondered if there could be a place where everyone could post their artwork. Such as Facebook where people post photos of activities they are doing as well as artwork, travels, etc. I thought on the outside of the gallery i could enable the phone to scroll across the building and vision the artwork that people would be able to post on the space, AR of course not literally.

Target groups,

The main target group is tourists, although i know that many Austrian have never heard of the film the sound of music. The larger target group would be english speaking, tourists that are interested in the film.

User scenario on

You have arrived in Salzburg on a beautiful summers day and are ready and eager to explore the city of Salzburg. You see this admin ticket in a location where you are able to see the castle in view, you scan this poster and then the beginning scene of The Sound Of Music appears and you then hear the music and are immersed in the scene of the movie. Once that is finished you are then able to see the other locations, and the quickest/easiest way to get there on your own rather than taking tour busses. You can then in your own time go to the locations that interest you and only at the expense of the trains and busses.

User scenario two

Your an Austrian citizen and have always wondered if it was only Mozart that has placed you on the tourist map. You are out by the lake one summers day and you see a strange poster with an movie admit on it. You scan this and you see a boat with a singing lady and 7 children rowing along the lake infant of you. Afterwards you can see the information about the movie and realise why so many americans are interested in your city....and now all those busses with 'The Sound Of Music' plastered on them make sense and you've had a sneak peak into the movie, so you go home and watch the rest, then explore all the other locations that are so close to you!

This was a really cool experience for me. I have never done any web design before and had never heard of the Muse programme. Kate and I watched a few tutorials and began to play around with the programme. The website isn't the best one, but for a first timer i felt pretty proud of what we had achieved.

Its hard to come across websites n English describing Lehen but thank goodness for google translate. I was able to translate wikipedia and get some more information about the place. It was good to know that it seems easy to get to via public transport with trains and busses. I am taking an interest in the library for my individual project and the art gallery

I really enjoyed this lecture. Most designers that are studying might agree with me that the quote form follows function is repeated many times. I liked how Richard Sennett looks at form and function. How if something were to change in the function of this car the form would also have to change as the form and function are so tightly fit. I found this really interesting. Also when he talks about the city shapes, how there was a star and a circle, I have never looked into city planning before and this was really cool to see the thought process around planning a city. And how he looks and discusses the shapes. I liked how he could it ‘poetic’ and saying if you change something it would be out of balance. The only shapes in residential houses i have ever noticed was in the houses all blocked together with 3 different houses that are repeated throughout the whole block. So this was refreshing to see other thoughts and ways.

Doing some online research on Lehen for the AR project. This article doesn't do it much justice saying its a shitty area and mentioning how it gets contested. It also outlines that many immigrants live here as it has affordable real-estate. The mains historical points from this article is that Lehen used to be a agricultural area and had the football stadium that now has been moved, it also has the Salzburg library, the church run my the monks belongs here. As a tourist this article doesn't sell Lehen to me, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit the suburb!

TED talks are so great and i love watching them. This one was really interesting for me. My knowledge of the human body doesn't go past the Greys Anatomy script so this was cool. I found it so interesting mostly because I thought that the human body was pre designed and that was that. Of course i knew that transplants etc happened but i had never known the process behind it or looked at this in the perspective of design. How they are designing parts of the body and even able to print them off is amazing. This taught me that design goes so much further than pen and paper but to medicine.

I read the article shape of design on the wiki.

I really liked the one line when he said that a polished axe does not chop better just as the designed lamp does not light the room better. This is all just humans opening their minds to invention and reinvention. I liked this as it makes me appreciate design, it says that it is not necessary all the time, but we enjoy it. I believe it is something that now comes naturally to most to want to be surround by nice things, well nicely designed things. Im not saying that is has to be expensive or labeled (although that would be nice). For example when the lecture browsed through his portfolio and said it needs more 'love' and it took this as 'flat' and having no personal touch. This makes me think about some of my own work, i don't craft it as if it were for myself and it also is flat and needs more love. I think the best design is when you care about it, you love it and you believe in it. This is where the spark begins and then it becomes beautiful design!

this article mentions smart cities but in an environment that i hadn't thought would use this technology, a slum, the poorer side of the spectrum. this is interesting because the people in these sorts of areas are probably more in need of help and have less of a voice than people in Barcelona for example.

the one sentence in this article that makes me think the most was

"It may also be that sensors and smartness paradoxically limit citizenship rather than extending it, if citizens just participate by generating data and real resource decisions are made elsewhere. This is a dystopian version of smart slums as a way to subdue and control. "

this could be applied to the smart citizen projects in Barcelona also. this is where the citizens have to decide what is done with the data and who controls it to make it a positive thing.

it is a platform, a piece of software that you have that informs you about your environment, you can then take the data it collects and upload it to the website online.

that fact that you are able to look at the pollution levels in your own environment and other information such as light, humidity, temperature, and noise i think could be a huge eye opener. i know that i have never actually given a thought to any of those things on a regular basis and now i have to opportunity to be able to look at the progress of a city this could be a change to how people treat where they live, you don’t shit where you eat right ?

also it was interesting to think that the information we are given about the weather pollution, we don't know where this data is collected, like he said in the video this could be 50 meters from where we are, so the air we are breathing is different to the air we think we are breathing. it would be interesting to see data that is more accurate to where we are in our cities.

#smart citizen

to have a smart city you need smart citizens

this is the start citizen project

it is a platform to get smarter cities but by educating the citizens. you are able to connect data, people and knowledge so everyone is informed and connected with their city, environment, and community. this particular project is currently being deployed as initial phase in Barcelona. But looking at the map you are able to see the active citizens across the globe real time.

This article was really interesting for me. When ever I see the word 'future' in the title i always think of hover cars and shiny new things etc. But this article was different. At the start i found it interesting how the media we use to communicate is so visual but "Stuart Candy, Bruce Sterling, Anab Jain, Justin Pickard, Nicolas Nova and Julian Bleeker argue that Highly visual, often emotional, and ethnographically infused, their approach brings the future alive through videos, objects, and print media". I liked this as it bring the future back to design. It makes the future something i can understand as a beginner designer and i can apply these elements to my own work. I also liked how the described 'the familiar strange, and the strange familiar'. This got me thinking all about how the future is strange to everyone and yet it is always talked about that it does become familiar.

Looking at the examples 'Auction of the future' and 'Our plastic Century' really stood out for me. I think this is because after all the futuristic talk they both had elements of the past. This made me think that you have to know your past to know your future. For example the Auction of the future used present things such as a parking lot as if it was set in the future. Our plastic century used past also but in a more informative way using the water coolers to show how much plastic is in the sea. I think it is important to use the past to understand the future. Maybe that will make the future more familiar? or more strange ?
