Learn how to build and program an open source Volumetric LED Pixel Array using Addressable LEDs.
Volumetric / 3D LED pixel arrays are mesmerizing to watch and interact with. However, there aren't many commercially produced solutions to this, and they can be quite expensive even to make on your own. This workshop introduces a "path of least resistance" solution to building a low cost 3D Pixel Array from readily available hardware and easy fabrication methods most people should have access to.
This array design makes it easily accessible to artists and designers that want to learn more about how to work with Addressable LEDs, and especially how to create and run visual content on it from software like TouchDesigner, since the workflow and rendering methods are far from similar to traditional 3D modelling and rendering technology.
Project files and instructions are available for free on Github, but this workshop will give you a hands-on experience and time with the creators of the open source project. For the price of the workshop, you will also get a small section of a working array to get started with, and optionally more at a discount if you would like to purchase more modules with your workshop.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to bring?
All you need to bring is a laptop (Mac or PC) that is relatively recent and well powered. Having a dedicated Graphics Card (Nvidia or AMD) would help, but is not strictly necessary. Windows 10/11 or higher than MacOS 10.15 is required. MacBook Pro from 2017 or newer is highly recommended.
What should I do before the workshop?
If you don't have any experience with TouchDesigner, try their introductory Tutorials to learn the basics of TouchDesigner. If you don't have any experience with TouchDesigner and would like private tutoring beforehand
What comes with the workshop?
We will provide everything you need as far as power supplies, controllers, LEDs and fabricated materials to put together one small module of Volumetric LEDs. If you want more than just one module, you can order up to three additional modules for a discount to use at the workshop. More info soon!
