Woody Guthrie is Bound for Glory at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012
This Land: The Story of Woody Guthrie will open on 3rd August 2012 at Zoo Southside venues, in the heart of the hustling, bustling city that is Edinburgh! Interplay are delighted to be presenting the show for audiences at the Fringe 2012.
This Land is a realisation of a six year body of work. The show was originally developed in special schools in 2006 with a cast of 4 actor-musicians, set inside an intimate transit camp tent. Audiences were immersed in the action as it unfolded around them, with sights, smells, tastes heightening the experience. Using Woody’s own words and music, the story is a rollercoaster of highs and lows chronicling the largely tragic life of a man who influenced music, and shaped the landscape of music that we know and love today. He gave the protest song it’s name and paved the way for artists such as Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Phil Ochs, and later Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer and Billy Bragg who speak out about social injustice.
Fast forward to 2012 and Interplay is debuting This Land at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a cast of 8 exceptional actor-musicians. The work follows the arc of Interplay’s ethos – growing the work alongside our core audience of young people who face barriers to enjoying or experiencing the arts. Interplay develops all of its work by working closely with disabled audiences, within a national network of special schools, and then take this work to wider audiences in venues and arts centres around the country.
The sensory element and innovative approach to storytelling has delighted audiences on the company’s recent tours, including Mary Webb’s Precious Bane tour in 2009 and the recent production of Bill Naughton’s Spit Nolan.
