“The Great Red Dragon Stitched in Sunlight” satins, suedes, lace and cottons quilted into the Red Dragon screenplay, framed in plexiglass
For #BoldlyBecoming entry I wanted to really push myself as a quilter. Creating my design in EQ7 and translating it into fabric, and getting it as true to my vision as possible took over 100 hours of cutting and sewing, but was well worth it. I used the Red Dragon screenplay as the paper backing, printing my pattern onto the pages and using them to guide my work. My goal was to represent Francis Dolarhyde’s dual natures similar in style to a stained glass window in a church. To ‘adapt’ the original Red Dragon into something else tangible but inaccessible. To piece ridiculously complicated curves because I can. To make a quilt that no one in their right mind would sleep under.
(Fun fact: the teeth I pieced are based on my own. I have a genetic defect that means I’m missing two teeth, and in their place are dead baby teeth that never got pushed out.)
