Petition: instead of "witch is when girl, wizard is when boy," I propose a new method of identification: witch are magic users who are goth, wizards are magic users who have exceptional whimsy, mages are the magic users who are boring and normal. If any has more ideas to add to this list, please do. I'm still trying to figure out where sorcerers, warlocks, and anything else fit in.
