He/him/his. I'm Ezra, a 22 year old FTM and freelance journalist, currently out of work due to disability. I post about secular and religious witchcraft, activism and the occasional fandom stuff. In witchcraft I specialise in pain relief and relaxation magic, but have a great interest in herbalism and green witchcraft. I am also a diviner, specialising in pendulum readings and dream analysis, but I also work with tarot. Omg it looks like our application for this flat is going to be successful! After 4 months of being homeless sleeping on a camp bed in a freezing cold and poorly built conservatory, and we’re finally going to get a home! I’m so happy I could cry! Once we move in and we have internet, I can start posting regularly again, responding to hundreds of IMs etc. I miss my blogs!

This is probably a few asks in one but hey ho. What are the current waiting times for GICs in England?? Is it possible to get referred to another clinic with a shorter waiting list if I've already been referred to Nottingham?? And how would I do that if it's possible?? Thanks btw, your blog helps me a lot and you must put a lot of work into it :)

The best estimates that we have at the moment for English GICs are:

Charing Cross - 13 months

The Laurels - 15 months, plus an additional wait of around a year to see one of their doctors after the initial appointment

Daventry - 15–16 months

Nottingham - 24 months

Newcastle - 12–14 months

Sheffield - 16–18 months

Leeds - hard to predict, their website states that people currently receiving appointments have been waiting around 18 months, but reports are that it is much longer.

If anyone has more up to date information then do let us know!  Waiting lists do frequently change a little though, as they are very hard to predict, and we can only base them on what others report.  If you can get hold of potential GICs directly they might be able to give you more accurate estimates.

You can be referred to another GIC, although depending on how long you’ve already been waiting it might not be much quicker.  If you wanted to try then it would be a case of going back to your GP and asking them to refer you to another GIC.  Once you decide which GIC you’re going to go to it’s best to contact the other to ask them to remove you from their waiting list to avoid them offering you an appointment which could go to someone else.

For some extra context, this facility is not considered a large scale producer, or a factory farm. Those who run it refer to it constantly on their social media as “a family run farm” because they know people like that. Everyone who buys from here will say that they get their eggs from a small, free range, local family farm. They’re not lying… But this is what it looks like.

Queer African American Women and the History of Marriage 

This photo and headline accompanied an article from the October 15, 1970 issue of Jet magazine. They reveal that long before the recent struggle for marriage equality began,  African American women who love women have engaged with the institution of marriage and have fought to make it their own.

Edna Knowles, on the left, and Peaches Stevens were wed in Liz’s Mark III Lounge, a gay bar on the South Side of Chicago, “before a host of friends and well wishers.” The article ended by noting, “although the duo has a type of ‘marriage license’ in their possession, the state’s official marriage license bureau reported it had no record of their license.” This ending serves to remind Jet readers that Knowles and Stevens’ union was not legitimate in the eyes of the state, as does the use of quotes around the word “married” in the headline.

However, decades prior to this bold public display of queer affection, African American female couples in New York strategized alternative ways to obtain marriage licenses in the 1920s and 30s:

“Marriage ceremonies were held with large wedding parties which included several bridesmaids, attendants, and other wedding party members. Actual marriage licenses were obtained by either masculinizing the first name, or having a gay male surrogate obtain the license for the marrying couple. These marriage licenses were placed on file with the New York City Marriage Bureau.” - Luvenia Pinson, “The Black Lesbian: Times Past-Time Present,” Womanews, May 1980  p. 8.

Also during the 1930s, popular performer Gladys Bentley was making a living singing bawdy tunes and playing piano late into the night at various clubs all over New York, including one named after her.

Bentley married her white girlfriend in Atlantic City in a ceremony to which she invited friends in the entertainment industry:

“Columnist Louis Sobol remembered Bentley coming over to his table one night and whispering, 'I’m getting married tomorrow and you’re invited.’ When Sobol asked who the lucky man was to be, she giggled and replied, 'Man? Why boy you’re crazy. I’m marryin’ —-’ and she named another woman singer.” - Eric Garber, “Gladys Bentley: The Bulldagger Who Sang the Blues,” Out/Look, Vol. 1, No. 1, Spring 1988, pp. 52-61.

These examples show some of the various ways queer African American women have created public rituals to express their relationships and have therefore insisted on their rights to full citizenship, many decades prior to the current struggle for marriage equality.
