To whom it may concern,
In light of the recent Brexit vote, a few things have come to my attention. Some of these I agree with, others the product of great quantities of false information that I personally find disgusting.
One product of this false information is the theory that they want to create a United States of Europe. While this is a worthwhile goal, much better in my opinion than the old divisive regime some conservatives preach, I doubt we'll see it happen in our lifetime.
I say this from looking at history and examples of forced unity the world over. Many European nations have had centuries to develop a national identity and distinct culture. You cannot simply expect cultures and identities to change overnight in order to create the United States of Europe. You cannot expect a Frenchmen to renounce his national identity and declare himself a European, a term which will refer to numerous people across different cultures. An international example are the nations in the Middle East, where opposing cultures have been grouped under a single nation, with disastrous results.
Another theory, more conspiracy than anything, is that there are plans to abolish Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, making it impossible for countries to leave the EU. For such a thing to happen, a new treaty will need to be written up to amend the previous treaty, all 28 members of the EU to sign it, and then for the signatories to Ratify the treaty within a set timeframe. A simple google search reveals treaties that have not been ratified by all 28 signatories, making them null and void. They may amend Article 50 eventually, but campaigning for it could see some Political Leaders commit the equivalent of Political Suicide.
Now onto Brexit, the issue which has seen numerous people raise their heads for the first time in ages. The key argument for leaving the Union was immigration, or economic freedom or better job prospects for British People, but a baseless fear that your neighbour wasn't born in this country. One thing I've noticed is the number of small minded individuals who have been voicing their joy over the Brexit vote online, completely ignorant of the fact that this decision will have lasting affects on the people of Britain, and could very well see the United Kingdom fracture.
It annoys me seeing individuals like Donald Trump and far right members of the British Political Scene celebrating the results of this vote and declaring that this sort of protectionist political regime is a step in the right direction. I may be politically biased when I say this, little surprise as my family and myself have always been left leaning throughout the years, but hiding behind our national borders, placing restrictions on trade and immigration, just to satisfy a few is not the way to improve ourselves as a society. It is only by working together and abolishing restriction regimes that we as a people are able to advance and develop new technologies to make our lives better.
It is for this reason that I like the idea of the European Union. I may not approve of the idea of a Federation in the form of the United States of Europe, but I still want to see countries remove restrictions to make the sharing of ideas, and industrial goods easier in order to advance. Britain leaving the Union is an alarming decision, and any possibility to stop it should be investigated.
I'll end this letter with a final observation. The other day, my flatmate claimed that people are scared of being called racist, citing the German people as an example of this. I didn't feel comfortable with this, as I am not scared of being called something I am not. I was not raised to be racist, or sexist, I was raised to be accepting of others and open minded to new ideas. At heart, I am a cynic, a declaration which has closed the door to entering politics, as I haven't got it in my to fight tooth and nail for an issue ignoring any new information that comes to light.
Sure, some people may be scared of having their close minded ideas brought to attention, while others may be scared of a legal mess due to poor education on how to approach and resolve disputes. But people as a whole are not scared of being called racists. The reason there is fear in our society surrounding certain cultural and ethnic groups is due to the actions of a minority who hold conservative views, and the actions of media outlets, News Corp being the prime example, doing nothing more than riling people up. Some political figures do nothing more than rile people up, their conservative views acting as a magnet for the likeminded, their arguments revolving around misguided information.
As a final word, I implore people to investigate the major issues of the day, from an unbiased news source if possible, or to investigate the issue from both sides before setting their opinion in stone. It is my belief that once you know the issue from both sides, are you able to make a justifiable opinion. That is my belief though, so like everything I've said above, take it with a grain of salt and investigate matters for yourself.
With kind regards, A left leaning 19 year old
Excuses of a Group Partner
We've all been there, we've all done that. You all know exactly what I mean by the title. And if you don't...what kind of paradise are you living in, and what's the journey like through purgatory?
So far, I've had a few excuses given to me as to why my partner's share of the work hasn't been started. In chronological order, we have:
I was out of the country. A fair enough excuse really; I mean, who wants to do an assignment on Holidays.
I brought the flu back as an unexpected souvenir. This one I could still believe, seeing as a work colleague brought back the same souvenir after a cruise. But posting a photo on Facebook going out to lunch afterward? That's just in poor taste.
I'm currently working on another group assignment. Obviously, depending on whether the moon was full, the winds were blowing in the right direction, and the Gods were in a particular pleasant mood, the assignments you have to work on could feature numerous pieces of group work. But seriously, we've had this assignment since Day 1, surely you'd have done something for this assignment that I could use for my half. And surely you know how to manage your study time in order to complete everything on time.
I have to look for somewhere to move in two weeks time. Again, understandable. Landlords are finicky people, liable to sell their investment properties at a moment's notice, turfing out the poor tenants with a grin on their face. I kid, only the truly horrible are that bad. But honestly, after the last few excuses, do I think I'm ready to accept this? No, not really.
To date, that is all. But we have 3 more days before the assignment is due, and tomorrow I'll be twiddling my thumbs a bit after fine tuning the work I can complete. Oh well, guess I amp up my procrastination in preparation for next semester
Day 4 of the Election Campaign...old wounds are festering, façades are cracking, and the first stumbles of the race have been heavily scrutinised
PG: Parental Guidance?
About a week ago, my flatmate asked me a weird question. For context, we were having a discussion that started with my Economic Lecture from the night previous, which eventually moved onto social perceptions, and eventually, which parent do you take after most?
Now, this is a strange question for me. Both my parents worked full-time for the majority of my childhood. Sure, Mum did cut her hours back while myself and my siblings were born, but she was back to normal hours within a few years.
However, my Dad has also acquired a brain injury in that time, which has disqualified him from being a member of the workforce, and changed the family dynamic to something that a lot of people will find strange, but I consider normal.
So, which parents do I take after? Most people seem to have a closer relationship with their Mother over their Father. Both of my flatmates get along better with their Mothers, their Fathers being distant or having completely different personalities. And at a glance, I follow the same trend. Like my Mother, I am a bookworm and introverted, with a few, close friends, and a certain cynicism. Not to mention the amazing sense of direction, which is comparable to having a virtual map buried within your head!
However, I am also very much like my Father. When pushed, I can talk ‘til the cows come home, making quick friends out of people and earning their respect quickly. Some of my patience is bound to have come from Dad as well, countering the fiery anger Mum has gifted me with.
Then some things are just inconclusive. Did my math skills comes from Mum, the family banker, or Dad, the TV Technician? Has my handwriting become a combination of both of my parents, neat when written slowly but comparable to Doctor’s handwriting when in a rush? And my cookings skills, did they come from Mum, or was it Dad who influences the dishes I make having moved out of home?
I would like to think that my extended family sees elements of both of my parents in me, without a clear bias towards either. Both of my parents have made enormous sacrifices raising myself and my siblings, making me feel honoured that I’ve picked up the traits I have from them.
Today, in my exciting* life...
So last night after Uni, I was walking up to the bus stop. Exciting, I know. And before I get into this equally exciting parable, let me just state that I'd just gone through a 9 hour long marathon of back to back classes, in which I was surrounded almost entirely by first years, and had spent the previous 5 days working.
Anyway, there I was, on the verge of zombie shuffling down the last street I had to traverse before I got to the blessed bus stop. I was tired, seeing as I hadn't had a day to myself in almost a week, and I was hungry, seeing as I'd had breakfast and two sushi rolls that day. So how I managed to notice the $100 in cash fall from a someone's pocket may very well be an act of God himself.
But notice it I did, and what did I do with that knowledge? Without really stopping to consider any alternative, I picked the money up, took my headphones out, and ran after the rightful owner.
But the story doesn't stop there. I wouldn't describe the owner as being beside herself with gratitude, but she was obviously happy to get the money back. And considering the numerous stereotypes surrounding my generation, and how untrustworthy people can be, she was thankful. In a decision that took as much processing time as my decision to pick the money up, she split the cash in half, and gave me a share as a reward.
Needless to say, I was shocked. I didn't return the money expecting a reward, I did it simply because I'm a good person. I know what it's likes having to count your pennies and stick to a strict budget in order to ensure you can afford the necessities. For all I know, she could've needed that $100 to get her through to pay day, so losing it would cause more grief for her than any monetary gain for me.
Despite trying to turn down the reward, she insisted, eventually walking away. For a few seconds I stood there, looking at the money in my hand just trying to come to grips with what had just happened. By being honest and returning cash that someone had dropped, I had been given 50% of it as a reward.
So remember Kids, there is nothing wrong with being honest. It is an admirable trait, and if my crazy story is anything to go by, can serve you well in life.

One Year
This time last year, I was living at home. Now, I’ve moved into my new flat, one that is not merely a temporary place to live while I adjust.
This time last year, everything was in my parent’s name. Now, everything is in my name, and in my control.Â
This time last year, I was sick of learning. Now, I can’t get enough of it. I would gladly take on an extra subject next semester, even if it left me with less free time than I have now.Â
This time last year, I was single. Now, while I’m still single, I spent a few months dating a lovely girl. Leaving her and moving was one of the hardest decisions for me to make.Â
This time last year, I could barely cook. Now, I cook for myself more than I eat out.Â
This time last year, I worked in a job I hate with people I could barely stand. Now, I work in a job I like, with people who work hard to get work done.Â
This time last year, I suffered from mild depression. Now, while I still have bleak days, these are few and far between.
This time last year, I was the classic introvert. Now, I’m planning not one, not two, but three outings with my friends over the next few weeks, while also planning on attending two 18th birthdays.Â
Sometimes I look back on the last year with amazement. I think of everything I’ve done, everything I’ve achieved, and struggle to understand how I could do it all in the space of 365 days. The change I’ve seen in myself over the last year is phenomenal, and it is something I wouldn’t trade for the world.Â

Error 404: Author Not Found
The author you are all concerned about is otherwise occupied at the moment between two group assignments (where he'll be working on 30-50% of the submission), moving into a new flat, finding a new tenant for the old flat, and working in what is still a strange, new, and wonderful job. Regular posting will commence once the author's life has returned to a state that is considered normal.
We Need Change
While I may not have supported everything Tony Abbott stood for, I am not supportive of this sudden change in leadership just over half way through his term as Prime Minister. While it was obvious that his term was terminal, I believe that the Australian Public should’ve been allowed to choose their leader.
Unfortunately, this is a regular occurrence for the people of Australia. Malcolm Turnbull, the 29th Prime Minister of Australia as of the 15th, is the fifth leader we’ve had in as many years. This is a feat that has not been replicated since the dawn of the Australian Federation.
After the last 24 hours, I’m tempted to agree with Bill Shorten in that the Australian Government needs a change of direction, and not a change in leadership. However, seeing as Shorten’s party was voted out a mere two years ago, Australia does not need another knee jerk change of direction.
What Australia needs is stability. We need a leader who remains in power for the duration of his term. We need a Government who can function efficiently. The current state of Parliament and the Prime Ministership is quite frankly ridiculous, our nation a laughing stock.
Something needs to change. We need leaders who care about more than votes. We need a Government we can be proud of once again.
