The Writer: A 250-Year-Old Mechanical Marvel by Pierre Jaquet-Droz
The automaton "The Writer," created by watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790) in the 1750s, is a mechanical marvel. Jaquet-Droz, known for his watchmaking skills, built this automaton along with two others to showcase his expertise. Comprising 6,000 parts, this 250-year-old machine uses a stack of 40 cams with three shaped edges to translate the movements of the boy's arm. "The Writer" can inscribe any custom text up to 40 letters long, spread over 4 lines. In 1906, it was purchased for 75,000 gold francs (a colossal sum at the time) by the History and Archaeology Society of Neuchâtel.

Engineer Ian Davis built his own mechanical prosthetic when his medical insurance did not cover the cost. His prosthetic functions without batteries or electricity. In early 2019, Davis lost four digits on his left hand due to a work accident, prompting him to create the prosthetic
