02. Ready? Fight!
We must sharpen our minds to face our biggest challenge yet. Yes, the senior show is part of it, but this is a challenge we must face independently. It is the ferocious, mysterious, daunting, and—dare I say—exciting senior thesis, also known as the final boss with unknown stats and 9999 damage moves. Although senior thesis is done individually, we all still get together to help one another flesh out ideas.
Speaking of getting together, the branding team has relentlessly funneled the class’s responses from four unique themes to two themes to finally one. HUZZAH! The team presented the concept to the entire class, and the overall response is positive. The copy team is refining the story, while the branding team is moodboarding for potential visual concepts. Meanwhile, exhibition and operations are on the move and hunting down vendors. Heigh-ho heigh-ho it’s back to work we go~ See ya!
03. We think we can
Branding and copy teams have been chugging along like The Little Engine That Could and conceiving possible titles and visual directions. A few setbacks here and there, but hey, that’s part of the process. With our first deadline approaching, everyone is hustling.
Web team is flexing their fingers and generating code for the website. Exhibition and operations teams are continuing to reach out to vendors while at the same time moodboarding to determine how to showcase our projects in an efficient, affordable, and creative manner. Finance team is collecting dues and applying for funding.
Outside of senior show planning and thesis research, everyone has been working on building a personal identity.
We’re running full steam ahead; we can’t stop, we won’t stop.
04. Throwback to semester one
Fresh-faced and ready to take on the world. The year was 2013. It was our first semester in the BFA program, when we took Image Making and Intermediate Typography. At that time, we were split into two groups because we were—and still are—a large class. These two design classes had us pulling all-nighters in the BFA lab.
In Image Making we explored different mediums and materials, while in Intermediate Typography we utilized the grid and created our own typeface inspired by a person of our choice. The emotions coursing through our bodies ranged from excitement to relief during our first ever BFA critique.
Before we knew it, we were lingering in the hall outside of our classroom for our first portfolio review. Anxious. Sleep-deprived. Terrified of the possibility of probation. Portfolio review was chaotic, but it was also a chance to see everyone’s work.
Despite the dark circles we’ve developed that would make raccoons and pandas jealous, we looked out for one another. Our bond was furthered strengthened by various social events like SF trips and parties.
Of course, we also had a mantra—which is inspired by our professor—that kept us going and you can still sometimes hear us utter: you could do.
