Happily Never After : A Drabble
His entire childhood, Camden had been told that you could always depend on your family. If he had to pinpoint the moment that changed for him- he guessed it would be the moment that the Professor showed up at their doorstep. Not that he didn’t think his family would be there for him, but not even he could deny a split there.
He just hoped that maybe Christmas could fix it. That was the only reason he was heading home when he’d usually opt to stay at school. As he stared out the window of the bus, he lowered his eyes and whispered, “Please God. If you can hear me, please help me to regain my family’s love.” It was a whispered prayer to a God that Camden wasn’t even sure he still believed in but it was his last shred of hope.
The bus slowed to a stop and Camden braced himself. He got off, and walked down the trail towards his house. His family was bound to be gone but he knew where the spare key was hidden thankfully. His eyes lit up when he saw the house, and he couldn’t stop himself from running towards it. Stopping at the door, he fished out the spare key and let himself in before replacing it.
Anxiously he waited in his room for his family to return, but was disappointed because they didn’t seem excited to see him. His mother just glared at him, and his father just gave him a strained smile. His brothers on the other hand, smiled with wicked glee. Which frankly scared the shit out of him.
Camden spent the next several days avoiding his brothers’ pranks and his mother’s scorn. The only high point of the week was Christmas day. His family was subdued but in Camden’s mind that was far better than the anger. They ate dinner in peace and even got through dessert without incident. But it was silent and not at all like he had been hoping for.
But he would regret not appreciating it the next day. His family decided that they were going on vacation, and by “they” it was defined as “everyone except Camden”. They dropped him off at an abandoned bus depot and of course his brother had decided to glue his shoes to the floor of the car.
So he was cold, and shoeless. Thankfully he had managed to grab his trunk and had thought to engrave it with a shrinking rune. He sat there for what seemed like hours and just sobbed into his sweater. What was he going to do, he wondered. He went into his pocket for a Kleenex and found a piece of parchment with a scrawled number on it. It was Peter’s, he knew and he also knew that he had muggle money and there was a payphone just over there.

I’m stronger because I had to be. I’m smarter because of my mistakes. I’m happier because I’ve overcome the sadness I have known and I’m wiser because I’ve learned from my life.
