There’s a spanish saying that has lingered beneath my skin since I first heard it as a child, “Calladita más bonita,” the notion that a woman is most beautiful when she is silent, when her voice takes up no space. A ridiculous phrase my mama, with love, taught me to challenge.
I wrote Deseo Celestial to speak into that long-held conversation of silencing by using irony and satire as its language. Así que, Deseo reframes and unveils the lineages of embodied sacred wisdom. The woman who arrives calladita (quietly) is not obedient. She is ancestral. She carries the memory de la tierra y el movimiento. The memory of women whose wisdom echoes across generations. Her silence is not submission. It is ritual, deliberate restraint preceding revelation, a testament to inherited resilience. It is a remembrance of sensuality as a portal back to the celestial, one woven into the body itself. Movement becomes prayer, justice becomes dance, and the body remembers what it has always known. What once served as an attempt to oppress is reclaimed as a canto to the feminine and masculine.
Here, we birthed a visual representation of this experience on film as it drifts through threads of ritual and remembrance. Fragments of Panamanian and Egyptian worlds in symbols emerge and dissolve, inviting intuition, memory, and invocation.
