Okay guys, can I just say something? I am the biggest SE Hinton fan because she gave us all The Outsiders and a variety of other books and we should not be giving her hate for this, because there is a lot of hate aimed at her right now because of a series of posts.
I can understand where she is coming from, and you would too if you read everything that she has been posting. I don’t see any of this as homophobic. From what I can see the tweets have been deleted but you can still find them on the internet. Look guys, I’ve been insulted and called out for writing a majority of straight fanfictions for the outsiders. And it’s got nothing to do with homophobia.
Someone wrote it’d be “cute” if Johnny and Dally were together. Cute? No it wouldn’t cute. It’d be disastrous. Let’s think about it. The Outsiders was written in the mid to late 60′s, the whole book is written in that time period. People were getting shot and savagely beaten for being gay, people still are. But it was worse back then. If they were a gay couple in this time period, it wouldn’t of ever been cute. It would’ve been hard. It would’ve been constant lie after lie.
And we are still living in a world were people are being tortured and killed for being gay, people are still feeling ashamed for being born this way. So no, Dally and Johnny being gay for each other wouldn’t be “cute” and she isn’t a monster for writing her characters to be straight. They are her characters. They are her intellectual property. I wouldn’t like it if someone wrote one of my OC into something completely different from who they are. I’d be pissed and we shouldn’t hate her for insisting they are straight.
SE Hinton is a long term supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, she isn’t doing this to be a monstrous human. She is doing what you and I would do if someone tried to change our much beloved characters. Also to add to this, I think it’s extremely destructive when people say things like, “Dallas and Johnny HAVE to be gay”, “it’s canon that Dallas and Johnny are gay”, or “The fact that Dally loves Johnny so much totally makes him gay”
We live in a world where if a high school boy even gives a genuine hug to another guy he gets called gay. Obviously gay is not at all a bad thing (it is actually a pretty beautiful thing). However to be gay you need to be sexually or romantically attracted to your same sex. It is very harmful when people only notice sexual and romantic love and not platonic love. Boys should be able to care for one another and have love towards one another with out it being considered sexual. We are constantly stereotyping men as non emotional, cold, and strong. There is also a lot of competition between men. Boys have committed suicide because they feel like they can’t open up and let out their emotions towards their peers and other guys.
The fact that S.E. Hinton wrote about a group of guy friends who genuinely love each other and who have a soft spot in each of their hearts for each other and aren’t afraid to show it is pretty beautiful. I’m not condemning gay outsiders fan fiction, and I do think there definitely needs to be more books and stories with gay characters. However the idea of a group of tough and street-smart guys having a strong platonic love for one another is one of the things that makes The Outsiders so amazing and revolutionary. It lets boys know that it is ok to love freely and to create emotionally supportive relationships with other guys with out the fear of it being considered sexual.
Se Hinton wrote this beautiful & amazing novel, she created all of the characters we’ve come to love the way she intended them to be. I see nothing wrong with the boys being a tight knit gang that love each other likes brothers. If you want to write fanfic that says otherwise, nobody’s stopping you.
However, you are crossing the line when you attack Hinton for writing the characters the way she did. You are of course entitled to your own opinion and perspective, but so is Hinton. She freaking wrote this book you guys, The Outsiders in my opinion is her masterpiece.
She’s definitely entitled to defending HER book and HER characters. I think some of you are forgetting she wrote the book and not you.
Stop the hate and negativity towards Hinton, and get back to what YOU love writing about. What she does shouldn’t concern you, you should focus on your own creativity and positivity so that you can enjoy the things you write and/or believe in.
