“And then,” Bucky starts, sounding nervous as he pulls another few pages out. “I went ahead and calculated an estimate for the whole project.”
Steve looks up at him and squints his eyes. “Why do you sound so nervous?”
Bucky just sighs, rubbing a hand across his forehead. “Before I show this to you, I just want to remind you that I warned you it wasn’t going to be cheap and you said ‘oh, no, cost won’t be a problem, I’m stupid rich’.”
Steve rolls his eyes. “I didn’t say that. But it won’t be a problem, I meant that,” he says.
Bucky slides the sheet over. “This includes everything, with labor added and it leaves room for things to go wrong.”
The idea of things going wrong should worry Steve, but he’s watched enough home improvement shows in the last few years to know that something always goes wrong. He trusts Bucky, and he appreciates the fact that he’s been nothing but honest.
Steve picks up the piece of paper, reading through each line before stopping at the total at the bottom.
“That’s it?” he asks, looking up at Bucky with his eyebrows raised.
“That’s– what? I price you at $206,000 and that’s your response?” Bucky says, looking alarmed.
“Well, I don’t know, I thought it would be more. You’ve seen the house. It’s terrible. And everything costs so damn much now,” Steve responds, looking back down at the sheet.
“Yeah, but it’s been renovated in the last 15 years. I’m not worried about having to replace plumbing or pulling up the floor and finding mold. That’s still a lot of money, Steve.”
Steve waves absentmindedly. “Do you know how many things they sell with my face on it? Too many, Buck.”
He doesn’t even catch the nickname before it leaves his mouth.
Bucky is smiling at him softly when he looks up, shaking his head.
“What?” Steve asks, smiling back.
“Nothing, Rogers. You’re just somethin’ else,” Bucky says. “I thought you’d have a heart attack seeing that number. Didn’t you grow up during the Depression or something?”
Steve snorts. “Yeah, or something. In 1939, this would’ve cost me a quarter.”
“You’re so full of shit,” Bucky says, laughing.
