“that particular piece is new.” her heels have click clacked on hardwood floors to announce the fact that she is there, but one would be forgiven for JUMPING given how suddenly she speaks up ; each word dripping with that thick british accent that had served her so WELL in this new life of hers. if the professional pencil skirt and blazer didn’t give her away as a member of staff, the lanyard that hung around her neck sure DID - along with the sugary sweet smile that appears upon command. “it was painted by robert rauschenberg, circa 1963 - combining silkscreen printing with painted passages, and acting as a sort of commentary on the rising tensions of us involvement in vietnam. it’s not our only piece by him ; though this one is my personal favorite.”
Irina hadn’t expected company but nevertheless she heard the other approaching before the sound of her heels even registered. Not only due to her heightened senses but the sense that this was a creature of the moon. Turning to face the woman who was speaking she smiled pleasantly as she pretended to take in the information provided. It was things she actually already knew but social graces and common sense had her nodding along. “I quite like it myself,” Irina agreed finally as the other paused. “Do you have any favorites by anyone else? I do enjoy hearing what someone who spends time with these works thinks of them. Sometimes it can give a whole new perspective I’ve missed.”

Chelsea smoothed back the more unruly parts of her chignon and adjusted the glasses upon her nose from the end, to the bridge that had just slipped from. She was waiting for someone, though she herself wasn’t really sure who that was. There had been a sort of defacto truce between all the gathering covens, no hunting in the city limits, and so Chelsea was already annoyed that she had been forced into running miles away just to have her dinner. Her dark mood was palpable in the air, hanging heavy as a storm cloud above the cafe table she was currently calling home.
“Please-” she gestured to the first person that had walked by in a long time “-sit, put me out of my bloody misery and give me some company to torment.” Chelsea sat back against the chair, the hard iron biting through the 2019 tom ford coat she was wearing and pressing into her back. She started at the person, eyes half lidded behind the wrap arounds “This town is unbearable alone-” the smell of stale coffee from her own cup, the slow rotting garbage from behind the establishment meant Chelsea want to wail in torment. She kept it all bottled up nicely though, behind a barely plausible ruby red smile.
Looking for a table in the cafe the amber eyes found a slightly familiar face of a Volturi member sitting on her own. The sight of the group didn’t spark quite as much rage in her as it did her sister, Katrina, but that didn’t mean she enjoyed seeing them either. In a human run business no less. After grabbing what she had ordered her heeled boots clicked on the floor as she moved to sit nearby the other. She was intending just to watch when she heard the word please coming from the other woman and she stopped to listen as she was passing.
“There it is,” Irina commented as the torment was mentioned not far after the plea. “I was going to mention how impressed I was with your manners but you went and ruined that very quickly,” she added tossing the blonde hair over her shoulder as she met Chelsea’s eyes. Still Irina found herself interested by the moody looking vampire in front of her and she took the offered seat. “I’d hardly call you alone,” Irina murmured in reply as she thought back on how the entire Volturi group seemed to have shown up. “Regardless I’ll do my best to act thoroughly tormented if thats really all you want.”

seattle experienced a shift of sorts since the death of bella swan. one unlike any of the other disappearances and presumed and confirmed deaths. she couldn’t help but wonder how the city reacted to hers. one couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the whispers of ‘it’s such a shame about the swan girl’ and ‘another gone too young’. everyone seemed to be more… careful. more cautious. as if that would help. everyone except the ONE woman walking in front of her on the street, who stumbles, royally. kiera steps forward to make sure she is alright when the smell of fresh blood emerging from the knee she’d managed to slice open hits her senses. nails attempt to dig into palms of stone as her eyes darken, instead pushing past the crowd of other bystanders going to check on her. she was by no means a newborn, not anymore she supposed, but she was still… new. determined feet distance herself far enough from the scene before she collides with another. “fucking -,” she mutters in frustration, heaving a sigh that isn’t necessarily needed. “i’m sorry - i’m just in a rush , i forgot my -,” she pauses, then realizing that she… couldn’t hear a heartbeat. “OH.” she nods. “you’re… okay. thank GOD - there was a… fiasco back there i had to get away from.” @irina-denali·
The city was far gloomier than it had been since she’d arrived and Irina couldn’t sit around in the temporary house they had while things outside were getting worse. Instead she dressed up in a subdued version of her usual glamorous manner, with heels still included, and was walking the streets to try and catch any information she could. Irina had just focused in on a nearby conversation when she was crashed into and snapped back to reality. Instinctively she tried to move so that the other wouldn’t feel as if they hit a brick wall but just as quickly figured out this was another vampire. The frustration makes her frown at the girl but that melts away as the other seems to relax. “I’m more than okay,” Irina teased as she glanced behind the other and saw the small crowd. “Shall we walk then? Just to be safe,” Irina added her golden eyes clear despite the smell of blood lingering just slightly on the air.

tanya takes a seat on the couch and wraps her arms around her sister, even though she’d never voice it out-loud.. she was fearful too, especially if a human had died. and the volturi in town, it already made things seem worse for wear. “ you have nothing to be afraid of, i’m never going to let anything happen to you. or kate. “ but it was reasonable she knew that. “ we’ll just have to make sure she doesn’t. if they killed a human.. it worries me what they’ll do next. if they were the ones behind this. “ her hair is pulled back into a pony-tail, it rarely happened unless she was thinking and she truly had. “ something does need to happen. and i promise i’ve been thinking trying to figure something out. but i can also promise like i said that’ll never happen. “ a soft and gentle reassuring smile on her features. “ we will figure something out, we have to. “
Easing into her sisters arms Irina let out a heavy sigh as she curled as close as she could. Tanya was often a guiding light in the dark for her and just having her close made everything feel less daunting. “I can promise you I won’t do anything to upset anyone or earn anyones wrath. You don’t have to worry about me. We just have to keep Kate safe. That’s all I want,” Irina murmured as she fiddled with the ends of her sisters long dark hair. She knew that seeing it pulled back meant she was thinking on this just as much as Irina had been and that was a relief. “I truly believe that the escalation to murder has to have something to do with them. The missing people were one thing but actually seeing one dead is a whole new level. It’s too much of a coincidence. I don’t know if I believe they’d hurt Kate but they may take her away. Like they took Edward from his family,” she explained her rushing thoughts all coming out now that she had someone to talk to. “I trust you and I know we will figure out something it’s just hard feeling so uncertain right now. I want to help but it seems so dangerous now. You will protect yourself too, won’t you? We need you most of all.”
The news wasn’t a shock to Irina but the name attached to it did bring a heaviness upon her. The Volturi were in town and now Isabella Swan was dead. The girl that the Cullen’s had once cared for and she imagined they still did was dead. It brought with it a whole new wave of fear. She didn’t like being afraid but knowing her family was so close to all of this made it unavoidable. She was curled up on the couch biting at her lip when Tanya came into the living room of their shared place. “I’m scared, Tanya,” she breathed as their eyes met across the room. “Kate was already wanting to go right at the Volturi and every time something happens I worry she’ll break and do it. What happens when she’s the next one dead? This has to stop before it gets to that point but what can we even do?” @ofsetfree

a winter wonderland was NOT cristian’s idea of a fun time ; plain and simple. he wasn’t the kind of grinch who had lost his childlike wonder over time and reverted into one, as an adult - even when he was a kid, he hadn’t LOVED the holidays. there were a couple ones, and then the holidays in general had become a… reminder, of sorts, of the life he hadn’t gotten to live. it had always been pointless to him, and he had always resigned himself to the way he WAS - but then matilda had come along, and no matter how low on the measure of fun the wonderland ranked ( somewhere below having a tooth pulled ), he would do anything for his kid. seeing HER face light up in joy was enough for him to feel good about their chosen activity.
the trouble was, she was a little kid in a CROWD. the atmosphere alone was enough to wind her up, and she had eaten copious amounts of chocolate over the course of the evening. of course she was running ahead of him, in spite of the fact that he had already told her to stay close. of course she was pushing her little legs as fast as they could go, weaving around the adults, dodging his line of sight a couple times in her plight - and of fucking course the crowd chose THAT moment to close in. “tilly-” he called, sharply ; but it was too late. she was lost to him. it was only a couple of moments. cris broke into something close to a sprint, and he pushed past the wall of people with some force. his frantic dad gaze was searching for her little mess of CURLY hair, and he called to her a couple times before he heard her cry ; she’d run into someone. probably full force, to cause her to have fallen so abruptly down. “matilda, i told you to STOP running-” he was there scooping her up in an instant ( she hadn’t been gone long, but the relief was evident from his EXPRESSION ), looking up to who she’d bumped into. apologies… not his strong suit. “sorry ‘bout that. she doesn’t listen.”
The night thus far had seemed to be going well for those attending the event. Irina was doing her best to look out for any troubles that might involve people ending up missing or worse yet dead. She couldn’t help but want to protect the humans around her because it was something she could do. One of the only things she could do without finding out more of what was causing the issue in the first place. The attention to the details of the crowd around her was the only thing that made her miss the signs signaling the small child headed straight for her. She felt the crash of the soft body into her legs and she did her best to lighten the blow but she couldn’t race to stop the child entirely. Someone would surely notice had she moved at inhuman speed to catch her. Instead she had to move at a pace that was excruciatingly slow and she did not save the girl from hitting the pavement beneath her at all. Irina was moving to help her up though when suddenly a man swept the little girl up and she had to take a step back to avoid crashing into him too.
“Oh well there is certainly no apology needed. I understand the need for adventure she must be feeling,” Irina answered as she smiled softly at the stunned little girl. “Matilda, was it,” she prompted the little one her attention almost completely on the adorable little child. “My name is Irina and I’m sorry I couldn’t catch you before you took that little tumble. I was getting very excited as well so I wasn’t watching my steps.”

‘‘ the one & only irina ! ’’ if only her family was around in this moment , the bright smile forming on her lips as she rushed over ( at a human speed ) towards her cousin. the denali’s were a part of the endless list of the cousins that rosalie now had since joining the cullen residence & family ; although she always gravitated towards irina , mostly due to the fact that both of them were able to uphold a beauty that many others did not. with their blonde locks & irresistible features , they were a power duo , people always holding back their looks when both of them walked into the building. ‘‘ thankfully i can not have some enjoyment tonight. how have you been , dear cousin ? ’’
The call from the familiar voice had Irina turning on the spot to meet the eyes of her cousin. “My darling, Rose,” she cooed back as she too moved to meet Rosalie but in a mockingly silly manner of what she’d seen human teens do. Unfortunately her dancer’s grace made her seem more inhuman than she intended but she doubted anyone human would notice it as anything aside from just that, the movements of a dancer. Her arms briefly circled the equally slender blonde and she sighed in content. “I was thinking the same thing the moment I heard your voice. Things have been utterly dull tonight thus far. Kate has herself all twisted up in knots of stress and it was nearly rubbing off. Anyways I’ve been well enough but tell me how you’ve been surrounded by all this chaos?”

“the city of seattle is in crisis. they’re pooling all their resources and channeling all of their funds into finding the missing and comforting those left behind, while hoping they’ll catch whoever is responsible, and yet somehow, in the midst of all this… they find it within themselves to throw a party.” it STUNK of the volturi. and it wouldn’t have even been shocking, given their grand entrance and generous donation. kate’s skin crawled when she thought about them, and she visibly blanched at the entrance to the wonderland, “remind me why we thought to attend this transparent bribery?”
Irina wasn’t nearly as quick to question humans and their means of dealings but she did understand Kate’s confusion with the current situation. It didn’t help that the Volturi had shown up at just the right moment to change the tides of chaos or so they said. Nothing about Seattle was normal at the moment. Still listening in to her sister and seeing her revulsion she linked her arm through Kate’s. “I, my darling sister am not here to be bribed by anyone. I’m here to see if perhaps we can help keep more humans from disappearing. Sitting out of the events that seem to have ulterior motives is not the way to assist if that is what we mean to do. We must be just as much a part of this as anyone else.”

“ i guess it’s not a help with, but kind of makes up for.. you know not dreaming anymore. and sleeping. “ sofia never thought she’d say she missed sleeping, but it was dreaming that she missed the most. but she supposed it wasn’t all bad. a soft smile on her features. “ sorry, if i like confused you or something. i didn’t mean to. “
“Ahh yes, I suppose that does make sense. I myself have taking to reading quite a bit. Some books can feel a lot like a dream,” Irina offered with a charming smile. “Oh it’s quite alright. I just hope you don’t give that same answer to just anyone who asks. You are very young, aren’t you?”
ofsetfree·:
“ i thought resting your eyes was just a thing older people say, but. “ sofia admits now that she was different, it was nice to close her eyes and just be imaginative for just a little while. it in a way kind of did make up for no longer dreaming. “ it actually makes sense, and it does help. “
“Helps with what exactly,” Irina prompted the younger vampire. There was a vibe that seemed to suggest she was very young and the vampire thing was easy to tell. The pairing of the two factors caught her attention and she couldn’t help but be curious. With the Volturi in town everything seemed more likely to be a problem of some sort seeing as they were clearly there for something. Irina intended to figure out what.

HE STANDS like a marble statue - only those in the know would know that he is just as cold to the touch and hard as such a thing. Marcus looks out the window, at this new city. He had been to the Pacific Northwest only a few times before, centuries ago, when this continent was still considered ‘new.’ Watching civilizations rise and fall, expand and shrink, had been one of the few pieces of entertainment this life had lent him. Maybe he would allow himself to explore this city - to see it firsthand, to understand how its ebbs and flows. He senses a presence drawing nearer and nearer to him. He is all too aware of each and every creature in the other room, particularly those he had traveled with. Was it so odd for a vampire to feel he needed ‘air’? Marcus turns around mechanically. “Can I help you?”
Seeing one of the three men alone was enough to draw her attention but as she noted it was Marcus, Irina could not stop herself from moving towards him. As he turned her face was the picture of high bred composure despite the inner turmoil she felt. They were provoking her sister and although she tried to respect the hierarchy for the sake of her family’s safety she felt angry for Kate all the same. “Perhaps you can,” Irina mused closing the space and placing her arm lightly through his own. She figured an appearance of intimate conversation would keep them alone for the moment. “What are your brothers planning, Marcus? Tell me that and perhaps you’ll be helping me.”

the three kings of volterra step into the room, and the whole room slows. they move as one onto the makeshift stage that is covered in AGED carpet, and…- and as kate’s eyes lock onto his, violet meet golden, something fragile breaks within her. something snaps. she has worked, all night, to keep herself a vision of detachment. to ignore the ache inside her chest and the blood rushing in her ears and to force a friendly smile when confronted with the GUARD. she had managed it, BARELY, had clenched her hands into fists so tight that she was sure she would feel the results for a lifetime, but she was done. in that moment, the rage she had been biting back all night erupted - and without a single conscious thought gone into the movement, she was moving towards them.
it was impossible to read her intention, mostly because not even she was sure what it was. she moved with purpose, jaw clenched, hands unfurled, but she struggled to push through the human crowd that was beginning to converge as one upon their ‘gracious hosts’ without automatically exposing herself, and maybe, that was for the BEST. she was heading for the stage. she was itching to do something. but there were too many bodies in her way, and as she was met with more resistance in her path, it was all that that she could do not to shove them aside - words a hiss as she said, instead, “get out of my way.”
As soon as the curtain revealed them Irina felt her legs go weak beneath her. Memories surged within and she felt fear stronger than she had in many years. Fear for herself but more so fear for her sisters. After the moment of weakness hit she forced herself to search the crowd for Kate only to find her moving swiftly through the crowd and straight towards the danger. Had her heart still beat in her chest it would have skipped a beat right then and there. She dropped the drink in her hand and moved. Faster than she should have in the presence of humans but she didn’t care. Not if it meant reaching Kate first. It was a nearly dizzying effort to control herself from going any quicker and looking even more suspicious. She very nearly threw herself into Kate’s path.
“Katrina,” Irina whispered her lilting accent heightened as it had been once upon a time when they were newly sisters. She didn’t look for signs of Kate’s gift. Nothing Kate could do to her scared her nearly as much as the thought of watching her death in those next few moments. “Katrina, please. I need you. It’s selfish but I can’t let you do this. You will leave me if you continue on this path and I won’t be able to go on. Please my darling sister. I am begging you not to do this. If you do I’ll charge in right after you to the same fate because I couldn’t bare it. I couldn’t. I love you, I love you, I love you,” she pleaded as her hands fluttered across Kate’s arms and upwards to grip either side of her face as she forced Kate’s face closer. Forehead to forehead so that their eyes would connect on only each other and nothing more.
“Do you hear me sister?”

“a dance?” her smile is as open as it gets, and her hand is already outstretched, innocently - so very few of the people present even aware of the kind of DANGER kate could be, in that moment. she’s been so…- distant, since they arrived ( perhaps ‘on edge’ is the better description, but she hates to think she’s reacting badly to the current situation, even if she IS ). back home in the mountains, where it was just their family and the rotating wheel of guests, it was easier be… a better person. here, she felt as if around every corner there was someone who could threaten their lives, and kate hated that. a dance is a very small way in which to try and make her more recent actions better. “unless you have someone else waiting in the wings.”
The pleased look of a youngest sibling finally getting the attention they sought came to Irina’s face as she heard the questioning word and her eyes flicked to the offered hand. She was sticking close to Kate tonight because she didn’t want to see anything bad come to her. They were surrounded by enemies. People who had stolen joy from them before and it wasn’t exactly easy to be there. Annoying them was the only reason she felt any need to attend in the first place. Raising her who hand she placed it into Kate’s with a bright smile on her face. “Even if I did I’d much rather dance with you,” Irina answered as she tugged Kate along and onto the dance floor. “Are you doing alright,” she added lowly as she moved closer for a moment in an attempt for privacy.
