Notes made throughout in regards to materials and costs.
Uploading my current CV.
BUDGET/COSTS
Unfortunately due to not yet receiving any quotes from companies specialising in custom summerhouses or from architects etc that I have contacted, my current costs are based solely on research that I’ve done so far, looking at approximately £15,000 for my building structure. (excluding any costs for additions including buying a sander, paint/varnish for exterior, equipment to apply the paint etc, as well as products for the interior and whiteboard paint also for interior).
Images of my final 3D mock up building placed within Queen’s Park, shown from various angles - facing the pond.
Reply received from Building Standards! Although unable to assist with public liability insurance or funding, I have been given lots of information regarding building types/warrants and pointed in the right direction in regards to public liability insurance, I will be contacting their licensing team for more information on this. Looking good!
I have emailed NL Architects in regards to my project, they work on projects in and around Glasgow - striving to ensure their work is both of excellent quality as well as cost effective. I look forward to their reply, fingers crossed!
*EDIT* I somehow managed to forget to include the size of the proposed building, I have again contacted them to apologise and shared the approximate sizes with them.
HEALTH & SAFETY
To ensure the development and installation of my building is secure and safe for the public, I would be hiring professionals to guide me along the way of the process. I have been looking at various architects and building companies within Glasgow and will be sending emails to enquire about any health and safety concerns as well as pricing for creating the building’s structure.
Use suitable safety equipment e.g safety goggles, suitable clothing, mask when painting/varnishing/working with any machinery
No public access until construction is complete and deemed safe for public use, fencing in place to ensure that no one is injured
Fencing on the rooftop around perimeter of building to again ensure safety of those making use of the space created
Researching about funding available in Scotland, looking at Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals. Their website and information about all funding programmes they provide is very accessible and easy to follow, I’ll attach below information I gathered around how much funding is available through the Open Fund for Individuals as well as eligibility for the programme.
Filling out the form for Building Standards, hopefully better luck this time around!
Update on last email sent to The Park’s Department, unfortunately not good news as I received an automatic reply that their email is now unmanned after Covid-19 - I will try again to gather more research through contacting building standards through their online form on the Glasgow City Council website.
Email that I have now sent to The Park’s Department, fingers crossed they’ll have some more information for me regarding public liability insurance etc.
During this module I have been heavily inspired by the likes of architect and graphic designer Frederico Babina and photographer Yener Torun. I relate to their work in their use of abstract forms and bold colours and how they emphasise line and colour, I was immediately drawn to their work, the same way in which I hope to draw viewers to my building installation.

I have already received a response from GCC regarding my planning enquiry! Gathering more information about the process and they have kindly forwarded the application to me as well an email address for me to get in contact with The Parks department and a form to contact Building Standards to enquire about funding/costs/public liability insurance as they are unable to provide advice on funding etc. I will get in touch with the contacts provided to see if they will be able to help me in regards to this!
Addition of fencing around the perimeters of the building for health and safety reasons.
Here I have added my digital design as a texture for my building, including the walls, stairs and banisters of the roof terrace. I originally had the stairs connecting to continue all the the way up but I decided I wanted to take advantage of the roof space and also use this as a means for people to participate in designing the space, with views of the scenery and flower beds I intend to create an environment people can use to escape reality and indulge in the world of contemporary art.
