background & info
Liam was born and raised in The Mines. His parents were both Catholic and this held their family together for a long time until his dad suddenly abandoned Liam and his siblings for a second family. It completely shocked them and his mother has never truly recovered from the complete breakdown she had. From two parents who did what they could, pretended to be a functional family, Liam was fighting for scraps of attention in every facet of his life. It didn’t take long for him to run out of steam. He was, briefly, a curious chatty child who really needed a leash as he was always fifty steps ahead. Then teachers demonised him and started taking him out of the classroom. They cited behaviour like anger issues and violent tendencies, but Liam wasn’t actively acting out. His presence just frightened the adults around him so no one wanted to engage — never mind trying to help the boy. Socially, Zoey was his rock. They were two kids from The Mines dissatisfied with life in the town, and he can’t imagine life without her either.
BODY DYSPHORIA & HOMOPHOBIA TW. Throughout his life he’s struggled with two things that fuel his temper: his body and his sexuality. As a closeted bisexual man, he wanted to be able to protect himself and prove he was just as masculine as any heterosexual man. But also, he craved the feeling of people admiring him and desiring him, so he pushed his body to the limit, where he looked good but effortlessly so. Then, he goes through waves where he only likes men or only likes women and it mostly depends on what he feels like his body is capable of and what kind of man he needs to be. He feels insecure and hates his physical presence, so he becomes protective of himself – and the whole cycle begins again.
As a child, Liam was very active. When he stopped talking a whole lot (and he still doesn’t speak much unless spoken to), all he felt he was worth was his fists and his height. Back when Zoey was an aspiring dancer, Liam was her number one fan. Sometimes he’d join along with the choreography. Step Up had been released in their teens, so of course he compared himself to Channing Tatum. He even offered to help practice moves that require lifting. To this day, he’s still never lifted her — not if he values his own skin.
Although he wanted to leave his origins, Liam is starting to get to the age where he doesn’t think he’ll leave Iron River. At first, his friends and his sick mother were the excuses. But now? He can’t imagine living anywhere else. He doesn’t know anywhere else. He still lives at home and everything. That doesn’t mean he isn’t well travelled. He often goes to the most random places to fill job positions and enjoys working security as he can meet different types of people.
Boxing was Liam’s thing and it still very much is. He’s just getting older and never had the discipline to be a proper professional. He’s still the kind of boxer where if someone did want to become a pro, he’s the first obstacle in the local area. Because of this, he is trying to make a career as a boxing teacher. It’s nothing serious as he teaches a handful of people in their backyards. Maybe he could own a boxing gym in the future but that’s the kind of fantasy he’d live if he lived past 35. He’d need to get some more education about how to run a business and to also stop partying, taking drugs and ruining his body.
connection and plot ideas
As an aggressive person, Liam has gotten into fights in the past and will inevitably get into more. It doesn’t have to be physical, but it can be over the silliest things.
As a boxing instructor there’s lots of potential. Whether it’s someone learning self defence or someone offering to invest in a boxing gym for him.
He has a budding hard drug addiction. It will cause tension among his loved ones and form a weakness for those who antagonise him.
I know the group wants to avoid crime/mafia but Liam is such a little shit. Petty crimes like mugging and breaking into houses aren’t beneath him, unfortunately. Or even beating someone up for hire. So he’ll stay kind of pathetic or minimal in that realm for the sake of the group’s tone around organised crime.
He’s also extremely sexually active. Jesus Christ. I don’t think he’d have a typical romantic relationship, and whether it ends up good or bad, he’d probably try to pursue some kind of polyamorous arrangement.
