background & info
Kaz is not local to Iron River and arrived a couple of years ago when their fancy job meant that they could buy a house outright. They wanted to be as far away from the workplace as possible, and the town’s environment suited them. It was a great chance for them to start anew too. They enjoy getting to know the people around town even if they aren’t the most social person. They’re really trying. At the ripe age of late 20s, Kaz feels like an elderly person. Easily overwhelmed, Kaz feels like life has dealt them a tough blow. Moving further away from the big cities he’s used to, Kaz really values where they hope to settle down. However, their attitude is still curmudgeon and they genuinely find it difficult to talk to people. There’s a functional adult human being somewhere in them. It just might take a few years for it to come out.
PARENTAL DEATH TW They were born and raised in Milwaukee but couldn’t wait to leave. In Kaz’s honest opinion, their parents should never have gotten together and they should have separated way before their child came along. It was nearly there when Kaz was about six. It was never a quiet day in the house and the paperwork would start any day. Kaz’s mother was just hesitant to follow through as she had put so much into marrying Kaz’s father, a white man who didn’t understand her religion. Even before her sudden death, Kaz always preferred their mother’s family. They lived down the street and young Kaz enjoyed learning more about their mother’s culture and religion. So even when Kaz and their dad were living in smaller quarters, they were never close.
At school, Kaz was a loner and had few friends outside the Muslim community. But even then, they were still different from other sons. The family was quite supportive of the happy accidents when Kaz broke from the masculine mold. After all, it made Kaz gentler and more helpful compared to their male cousins. They came out as a gay man in college. Suddenly what people bullied and isolated Kaz for back home, then became a valuable social currency. It was cool and fashionable to be gay in the liberal atmosphere. It was a nice time for Kaz but it still didn’t fit. When they had a breakdown after the ridiculous culture and toxic attitudes in the cis gay male community, Kaz had to come out again as non-binary.
Before Kaz knew what to do after college, hu was earning a disgusting amount of money when hu was headhunted by a hedge fund. It turns out hus cynicism made hum talented at spotting the cheapest yet most profitable industries to invest in. Hus company rewarded Kaz handsomely, everything hu could wish for just for hus brain and hus mathematical mind. But socially, Kaz was so disgusted with the environment. Hu came in, did the work, said what was said and immediately went home. No after work drinks. No colleagues as friends. Kaz didn’t consider humself a moral person, but the colleagues were just annoying people at best.
Soon after arriving at Iron River, Kaz became a regular at Five & Dime. In no time, Kaz and Zoey were chatting and vibing enough to consider them friends. Their sour personalities bonded perfectly during Kaz’s nearly daily trips to the store. Kaz wasn’t sure of the town they had spent a ton of money on a house for, but they thought Zoey had a good energy — and Kaz was spiritual enough to always place their trust in the universe. Unbeknownst to Zoey, her childhood friend Liam was one of Kaz’s first hookups in town. Kaz was wildly afraid of him but also mocked him and didn’t want to see him anymore. The affair grinded to a sudden halt when Kaz jokingly showed a picture to Zoey. To her face, Kaz had been making fun of Liam and sharing horrifying intimate details of the anonymous man. Kaz hid from both of them in utter embarrassment for a few weeks until they all realised it was an ice breaker for the future friendship. Now that the incident seems like ancient history, the trio use Kaz’s big empty home as a base for their hangouts. After all, Kaz’s origins are closer to The Mines than the upper class circle they infiltrated. It’s nice to have the other two around for comfort and familiarity.
connection and plot ideas
Kaz has some development ahead as a person and it is this transition from moody bad-tempered young person to a cool mature adult. It will be tough and there will be tensions, but there will also be sweet moments I hope.
I have an idea where Kaz’s evil hedge fund ruins a local business, or somehow destroys the community a bit. Word gets round that it’s their company but Kaz as a junior worker can’t do anything.
They tend to be extremely unlucky in love. They also have intense self-esteem issues. Someone doesn’t have to rescue Kaz, but the poor thing could use more confidence from anyone.
Their mother’s family is very large, so it’s very open and I’d love either short-term or permanent characters who are cousins or aunts/uncles/nieces/nephews to visit or move to Iron River.
Their family in town will probably be found family. Mentors in life, brother/sister type dynamics, maybe a roommate moves into the big big house they have.
