❝ i have a meanness inside of me, real as an organ. slit me at my belly and it might slide out, meaty and dark, drop on the floor so you could stomp on it. it’s the day blood. something’s wrong with it. i was never a good little girl, and i got worse after the murders. i was not a lovable child, and i’d grown into a deeply unlovable adult. draw a picture of my soul, and it’d be a scribble with fangs. independent book-based libby day from gillian flynn’s dark places.

”Smoke out the window, the landlord will have my head. Which — isn’t far off topic.” Instinct tells them to pull the cigarette from his lips, but that’s likely grounds for getting dumped. They gesture towards the window, and the silver case of Travis’ lighter propped up on the sill. “I’m not sure I’m gonna make rent this month.”
Loping over to the window, bowing his head to light the cigarette, he puffs out a breath of smoke, watches it wisp away in the wind. Holding Travis' lighter again displaces him for a moment. Just a moment. He gets over it. Over himself.
Another drag before he balances it on the edge of the window and turns to lean against the wall. Through his teeth, words muffled, "How's that?"

”Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. You can borrow it when I’m done, if you like.” They glance away from the book half a second to emphasize the notion. That would be a hint, Rust. Priorities; they dog-ear their page and drop the book by the side of the bed, into a small circle of knick-knacks and borrowed DVDs that form a makeshift bedside table.
”I’ve got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?”
He'd been half-asleep, eyes open but mind clear, one arm thrown across his stomach, aware of the heaviness of his eyelids whenever he blinked and of the steady, crisp turn of a page from Kennedy's direction. When they speak it's an alarm-clock jolt, and he glances over as he's reaching for his cigarettes, jamming one between his teeth and talking around it.
"Bad. You got a light?"
They can hardly be straight with themselves, extending the courtesy to anybody else seems almost unfeasible sometimes. It isn’t until they’re in crisis that Kennedy is forced to face the fact they find it hard to ask for help, as they do now, as they don’t speak. Their lips draw tight, brows furrowed, eyes dry and without tears.
”My friend Finn,” they exhale, “Was sleeping with somebody famous, without knowing they were famous. I found out and — and I told Finn. Because I should’ve, right? I think — I know it’s the right thing to do but he —” The silence frustrates them. The desire to speak but staying quiet burns their tongue. They just breathe. “Finn’s boyfriend — not boyfriend, but — he came to my apartment earlier. I don’t know what he wanted. But I don’t think he’s happy I told Finn. And I’m — I’m sorta — I’m scared.”
That's entirely not what he was expecting. Fear like this -- legitimate fear, rational fear -- he can understand, but he can't ease. Not really, not properly. He can lie to them, in some way, but lying to Kennedy makes his tongue feel heavy in his mouth, makes every swallow sour and unyielding.
"Anything that happens, it's temporary. You know that better than most." A beat. It sounds weaker than he'd intended it. "Won't let anyone do anything to you, a'right?" And that's true, that's a promise he can abide by. "You gon' tell me who it is or are you done spillin' secrets, hm?" He tries to make it looser, less of a prod at them and more like an attempt to lighten the mood. "You don't gotta tell me."
( the ledger slips from their grip so fast they stumble to catch it, looking up to rust with wide eyes and clear concern. )
Claire — ?
( his lip curls when he looks at the ledger; he can't help it. a sniff. he holds it out again. ) No, g'on, you have it.
( he's not sure who he's saying no to. he doesn't dwell on it. )
