Mutsuki hadn’t been asleep.
He figured he wouldn’t be for a long while. The bags under his eyes were growing darker, soft skin pronounced in a bad way. It wasn’t usually the kind of racing-thoughts-heart-skipping anxiety that used to keep him up. This was different; quieter, scarier, and not as easy to combat. Sitting up and reading in bed didn’t make him feel any less numb or hollow.
So he laid in the dark and stared at the ceiling until the shadows twisted and morphed. It wasn’t scary. He knew it was just his eyes trying to make sense of the black. He didn’t think in words, they only failed him. He thought in faces. Shirazu’s, Urie’s, Saiko’s, and one more he especially hated to think of.
He was terrified of the bitterness growing within.
But this was interrupted by the gentle voice feeling its way toward him in the dark.
He took a breath to make sure his voice would be fooled into sounding steady for her, “Saiko?” He asked softly, “Yeah, yeah. I’m awake.” Without even being asked, he moved over in bed and pulled back the covers, “The bed’s warm,” He offered.
He knew how she felt.
She answered his question with a nod, not even realizing that he wouldn’t be able to see the movement in the darkness.
For his offer, however, she is eternally grateful - a bit of closeness was exactly what she needed at the moment, and so she quickly made her way to his bed, which proved to be not as easy as she expected, having been stripped from her sense of seeing.
Once she arrives, she oh so readily cuddles into the matress, next to him - it is warm, she noted, and it felt wonderful, calming on her cool body.
She wants to say something, anything, but her mind felt like a mess and so the only words that leave her mouth are those that had been on her mind all the time, without her actually being able to make any sense of them and their implications.
“It’s quiet.”
