kota winks. smart woman. “yes, hypothetically.” she teases the word. “what does one do with bribe money, anyways? i imagine it’s meant to be spent on shit like diamonds and clothes, lots of clothes.”
“ that— but also real estate, yachts... with the right secret, one could build the foundations of a true empire. ” she’d witnessed as much happening in various circles, from new york to d.c., with secret-keeping in d.c. being more valuable. for obvious reasons.
𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐞.
Freddie stood awkwardly outside the shop, hoping to convince someone who looked old enough to buy him a packet of cigarettes. technically speaking they weren’t for him, they were for his mom, his BIRTH mom, and he really didn’t want to let her down (again). ‘‘ OH, hey, excuse me? would you be able to buy me a packet of Marlboro? ’’
“ okay— that’s what we’re not going to do, ” was her only response to freddie’s request. which was the only response to such a request, but if someone more reckless were to oblige later on... no. that wasn’t happening. “ how about we grab something better, pancakes? ”
𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧.
“i mean i’m down.” she pauses, leans forward a tad. “but how?”
with no idea how to go about this, isla simply offered the first thing that came to her mind: “ what about the post office? we could start by inquiring there. ” a suggestion that she deemed equal parts logical but equal parts stupid.
𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐞.
shit. “uh no.” he starts to laugh. what an idiot. he hadn’t meant to spill the beans on himself, but apparently he couldn’t handle his high. fuck him for being a lightweight. “it’s no biggie, just - can we like, just pretend you didn’t hear me?”
isla had a feeling he’d go with that approach. “ hm, cute. except for the fact that i did hear you. ” though what exactly was she supposed to do in this situation? perhaps, channel her father and tread sensitively— he certainly had to while she was growing up. “ may i ask why you’ve been smoking? ”

kota paused, contemplating. “i dunno, i think it’s safe to say this person would go to pretty far depths to keep this secret concealed.” a smirk.
she’d be hard-pressed to deny she wasn’t intrigued by the story... “ well in that case, i’d say you’ve hit a gold mine— hypothetically, of-course. ”
𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨.
“can i be honest?” theo asked, but of course, he didn’t wait for an answer. “i never learned how to do conversions- like, in elementary school? inches to centimeters, ounces to pounds, none of that.” just some gaps in his public school education. “never learned all the states, either. i guess i should get on that, but i’m still barely grasping algebra, and i’ve got a test on that next week,” he shrugged.
his words didn’t surprise her, for isla was in the same boat. and had gotten to know that it was a rather common occurrence; there were only a very small pool of people that she knew who were well versed in anything he’d listed. but that was by choice. still, being blasé in frontt of a student was the wrong approach... or so she’d heard. “ well, i know a great tutor for algebra— my friend’s dad, he’s a professor at columbia. i could see if he’s available, if you want? ”
𝐝𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐚.
“how much money do you think someone could make a year from blackmail alone?” her tone nonchalant as if this was your typical every day curiosity. “think big here, large scale secret - type of money.”
“ depends. how large scale are we talking? ” not that she’d ever engaged in anything of the sort. but there was no harm in being privy to certain details or very solid whispers.
𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐞.
“i feel SO bad for people who live in states where weed is illegal. i’d probably like. die. or something.”
“ i take it someone’s been indulging… ” this was new territory, considering isla never had to step in to police her sister’s children. the dynamic they shared did not entail in her trying to parent them. moreover she had no right to do so. and yet, here they were.
𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚.
“i love kids, but having any of my own is starting to seem farther and farther away in the future.” indica paused, giving context with her next sentence. “mrs. maddox from across the street asked me to keep watch of her little one today and let me just tell you, I had JUST finished changing her when she peed all over the towel I JUST washed, so I put her in the tub and guess what? poops all over the place, water and all.” indica’s face showed just how unpleasant the situation had been. “took my two hours to clean everything, had to re-wash the towel, and the baby.”
to say that her words weren’t affecting isla would be more than an understatement— it was an outright lie. her stomach was already flip flopping at the thought of impending motherhood, and every mention made that even worse. but she tried to mask her feelings, instead doing her best not to link her own personal feelings and dilemma with the conversation at hand. “ that… does not sound pleasant. at all. ” clearing her throat, she continued, “ i take it you’re not going to be as open to watching her again? ” trying to make light of the situation, a brief chuckle followed.
𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧.
“random question…” payson paused. “can you like block people from mailing shit to you or no, that’s only like a phone thing?”
“ you know what— we should find out. ” it would’ve been helpful in countering the stream of useless mail coming through at her late sister and brother in law’s home.
𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐭.
“if you ask me? i’m glad new years is over, it’s always been just a tad bit cheesy and over-done don’t you think?” he sighed. “i mean, everyone’s going to follow their ‘resolution’for a day and a half and go back to their bullshit from last year as usual.”
she shrugged, “ this is why more people should adopt my school of thought and stop coming up with them every year. ” if one required a time stipulation for a commitment, they weren’t all too keen on doing more / less of what they decided to in the first place. “ and for the record, i still enjoy the other cheesy, overdone aspects of the holiday. ”
𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥.
“am I the only one who isn’t obsessed with that netflix show? what’s it called? you? what’s it even about? I heard it’s about a psycho killer stalker or something weird like that.”
“ god, i was so much happier when that show wasn’t a thing, ” isla groaned. even when it was on a break, people would not stop going on about it. “ i’d recommend succession, instead— i binge watched both seasons last month when i got sick. ” it was the only time she wasn’t too annoyed about being sick and the series played a big part in that.

it had been a rough couple of days, estella’s dad had banished her from the office for some unforeseen reason, then Mercedes Benz still had her car. So she was stuck walking back to her house since she couldn’t get a ride from anyone, until she saw a car fly past her. “Hey!” She yelled after it, waving her hands to flag it down. Running to the passenger side, she motioned for the car to roll down its window. “I will literally pay you to take me home, these,” Estella had motioned to her shoes on her feet. “6,000 Versace shoes. I need to get home before they get ruined.”
hearing that offer, she shook her head, “ easy, tiger. you don’t need to pay me. ” and certainly not with versace; she wouldn’t be caught in anything from the label but that was simply a matter of personal choice. “ hop in, ” she offered after unlocking the passenger side for the girl, isla also moved to turn the music low. well, even lower than it already was. “ so— where are we headed? ” now would also be a good time to mention that she may require directions, having only been in the neighbourhood for a short period of time. but that’s where the navigation system came in handy. it had worked out pretty well thus far.

“ - - ay, either fuck off or help me with this,” bev called out, leaving the liquor store with a giant hockey bag filled to the brim with various types of alcohol, nearly toppling herself over in the process. a fire of excitement burned in her eyes as she grinned ear to ear, to explain her plan. “i’m gonna throw the biggest party ever known to man tonight. just decided it. i have to like, call into the radio stations to let everyone know to come - - it’s gonna be free, too. you should come: but only if you help me get this into the car.”
getting told to fuck off, invited to a party and being requested for help in the space of less than a minute? this was definitely not what isla had in mind when she’d stepped out for a casual walk in the area. nevertheless, she decided to lend her assistance. “ are we putting this in your car or something? ” she hoped as much, for dragging the bag along to god knows where wouldn’t be ideal what with her current... predicament. then again, neither would lifting the weight of it be, but she had already agreed. sort of. “ oh and err— thanks, but i might have to take a rain check on the party. ”
