April 7-10 is Work Experience Week, with all students out in the community investigating the world of work except for Grade 12 students, who are preparing their Grade 12 Projects for presentation on Friday, April 10th.

The Spring Community Potluck is April 1st. There will be an egg painting activity at 4:30 pm (bring blown, white eggs), and a potluck meal at 5:30. We look forward to seeing all of our Island Oak Community that lives in the Cowichan Valley and is able to come!

Our teachers went above and beyond March 28th, coming to school on their day off to get the school ready for students returning from their spring break. Thank you to Gary, Bill, Andrea, Annette, Barb and Lori (parent extraordinaire) for cleaning the roof and gutters, edging and cleaning the parking lot, installing new programmable thermostats, creating new cedar window surrounds, gardening and more.

The Island Oak community was recently treated to Chinese Spring Festival hosted by the students and families from China. Guests learned to make dumplings (which they then devoured), calligraphy and paper cuts. They also enjoyed music played by students on Chinese instruments.

History Through Art class: students experience prehistoric art by pounding their own brushes from cedar collected at local Mt. Tzouhalem, and painting hand outlines similar to cave paintings.

Community Spring Potluck Friday, April 11th, 5:30 pm

An invitation to all Island Oak Families and Friends, past and present, to join students and Faculty for a community potluck. Bring a plate, cup, bowl and cutlery to use as well as a dish to share. 

We'll be treated to a preview of the Island Oak High School Choir's selection of Les Miserables songs, in advance of their performance April 12th (see our posting on Talent for Charity talent show).

Talent for Charity Talent Show is April 12th! The Student Action Committee is presenting a talent show Saturday, April 12th from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Sylvan United Church in Mill Bay, BC. Half the proceeds go to One!International Poverty Relief to fund schools for children living in the slum areas of Mumbai, India (the students have elected to donate the other half to another educational non-profit, charitable organization they know---Island Oak!). The show features the Island Oak Choir singing songs from Les Miserables,directed by Annette Lampson accompanied by pianist Ron Kilian, the Glenora Handbell Choir, singer-songwriter Aidan Thorne and more. Support this student initiative by coming out, enjoying the show, and donating generously. We look forward to seeing you there! If you'd like to perform, contact Lahna at [email protected]. The students are also looking for baked goods to sell during intermission.

Island Oak High School Graduation this year is at the Ocean Front Suites in Cowichan Bay. Everyone is invited to the ceremony. There is no entrance fee and we hope to see you there!
