Thank you for your Iron Lung analysis fr! I love Markiplier and judging by your blog of course so do you, but it was really cool that you talked about the game independently from him as well! Cause I really love that game's universe!

I'm glad someone else noticed the 16 years timeskip and explored the COI's structure's propaganda during that time! And you explored in depth the implications of not knowing the Convict's gender. You know people would assume them(?) to be a man even without the figure of Mark as a faceclaim.

16 years is a long time. We don't even know how old the Convict was when taken, but one of the reasons they could have become disposable is from not being of child-bearing/rearing age anymore.

I think the symbolism and themes you explored are really poignant and a really interesting creative direction to go while everyone (including me 😅) focused more on the religious symbolism.

But when you mix the two symbolisms... I mean, a lot of christian religions coerce heteronormativity, marriage and children as the only way to fit in society. And with the Convict's possible original home being Eden, maybe they were the more religious one. And that would mean the Convict has been having this shoved down their throat back home too. Even moreso after the Rapture.

Common misconception though, but I actually don’t really care about Markiplier 😭 this was a one night gimmick blog that I’m only bringing back for iron lung posting since the movie is finally coming out. Before like a month ago most of what I knew about the game was just a couple Jerma clips and the PowerPak video (both of which were prior to the lore update) and I was just like oh cool blood movie, I love blood movies :-)

Anyway LOL yeah I’m focused on the game’s world specifically because I don't believe in movie trailers and I’d much rather have the full film to work through if something catches my attention. Plus Iron Lung is an incredibly tightly written game for how sparse it is (even mechanically too, ig), it really deserves the attention!

With The Convict’s gender it was always going to be rough, just like the fights for people to respect the pronouns of characters that DO have canonical pronouns that aren't she or he like Knight/the Hollow Knight and Kris. Like patriarchal and cisnormative society plus Mark being a man, but that doesn’t negate the exemption of pronouns in Iron Lung (game) and the usage of they/them for The Convict in marketing! Where is everyone getting the he/him from outside of assuming male as the default. Has no one heard of cross gender casting outside of men doing drag so projects can avoid hiring women? If people actually wanted to play in this space they would be using she/her for The Convict, there is just as much textual evidence for that but we all know why no one does…

A related point to this is, I think, it shows that for people who *haven’t* personally played the game, it reflects that they primarily or exclusively watch male let’s players, deepening the bias towards viewing The Convict as male. That is just conjecture, but personally I have only seen men play this game. I was recommended to watch a man’s let’s play getting back into it etc

The Convict being Degendered is an important facet to how much control COI exerts over them and how much COI has taken from them, entirely outside of the pregnancy reading.

And YES the timeline. 16 years in as a convict, watching other convicts go through their realizations. I keep having to remind myself that The Convict is almost 40 at the *minimum* so especially in a pregnancy reading it becomes clear that it’s about their ability to do Something, even through the veneer of research tasks. Literally, yes, postpartum and/or menopausal Convict forever.

I do think the religious readings are interesting, but outside of the obvious like Eden has the only trees left in the universe type stuff it just doesn’t jump out at me as much. But of course the intersection between the christianity interpretations and the pregnancy readings are awesome. I always come back to the nature vs industry elements of Eden vs Coalition of Iron but don’t have much to actually say about it.

It’s entirely outside of the game’s scope but I’m desperate for more information on the cultural differences between Eden and COI, just knowing they have different calendars is so impactful. Especially with implying they’re a more insular society enhanced by the loss of Mars, compared to COI’s ability to come together regardless of how fragile that situation is.

okay you all have had enough time to process its been a week.

obvious part first. The Convict dies due to the violent penetration of the lung by the phallic monster. What about that isn’t rape.

The other bits:

The convict has been a prisoner within COI for presumably 16 years, with COI’s goal of Convict Realization.

Convict Realization being “humane” rehabilitation and work towards COI’s goals

It’s known that COI’s population is half that of Eden (257 vs 468), and even with dwindling resources it’s obvious that to have a future you need children.

Combining Realization with future progress and making sure that Eden convicts (not just The Convict) adapt well to COI life despite their vastly different cultures it just kinda “makes sense” to baby trap them, if not just use their bodies to prop up COI’s future. (“crimes are repayed by rendering service to the general collective” - convict realization)

They are meat for COI to use as they see fit!

We simply do not “know” The Convict’s gender outside the usage of they/them, whether that is initial degendering from COI or The Convict’s identity, neither of which indicate anything about their ability to carry a child to term (not that other pronouns would either but not the point).

So, if The Convict has been assaulted in this way, COI would not put them into the Lung while actively pregnant, knowing that it is a suicide mission (though they deny it, sm-13 and “if they send you down in the iron lung they don’t give a fuck if you come back, or if the sub comes back, because it’s a pile of garbage and you’re a piece of shit” - sm-8) but at the same time, they wanted *that* convict to be Realized within it, 3 years ahead of the end of the Edenites sentences (sm-8, filament station)

Though with the Filament station entry being propaganda, it’s doubtable any of the Edenites will be allowed to properly reintegrate into COI (mob justice refutation in sm-13 in conjunction with moon z-8). It still holds that this convict was kept alive, away from Realization for 16 years, and now has outlived their welcome

In conclusion, The Convict is postpartum while in the Lung. any questions.

Oh and the Lung is pregnant with The Convict. #womb

& tbh a lot of my thoughts on Iron Lung conflate rape and pregnancy but within the context of the game, there is no consent. There is only coercion. You do what COI wants or you die. And even if you do what COI wants you're still doing to die. "They will get their execution. I will get my freedom." 👍

Simply put, it's about human cruelty, bodily autonomy, and misogynistic violence! All the way down.

Iron lung shaped like an inverted T, the porthole sealed shut. Classic phallic imagery.

The camera being so akin to an ultrasound

The monster, a big endless tube, kills the player by violently penetrating the lung.

Oceans are traditionally referred to with she/her

The tunnel you have to circumnavigate = vaginal canal

The blood oceans themselves being made of human blood (presumably from those killed by the quiet rapture) and explored as the last possible hope for COI to find resources to exploit for survival in the now resourceless universe

It’s easy to say both the monster and the lung are its baby! The way they both “inhabit” the ocean, I lean more towards the monster this way from the presumed symbiosis and its survival over the whalefall like points of interest.

Esp since the monster IS the first life found since the rapture, something that could be/mean “the future of humanity” like children. cough.

Or that the blood ocean is not pregnant at all, and is currently being raped/assaulted by the lung/COI as an entity esp wrt to the research sub

A convict, presumably from Eden, sent down there as a last hope for freedom, coerced, and sent to known death BY the entire. population of COI

Being constantly bombarded by COI’s culture and calendar and COI’s lack of trees etc etc

What other choice do they have here but to accept, and live in solitude in a way they can pretend it isn’t COI, maybe it’s still (for) Eden

Carceral systems are inherently dehumanizing and they way the Convict Realization log says “humane” while COI is feeding an endless string of nameless convicts into the oceans, just flesh as a means to an end - especially if they are prisoners from Eden, even less a person to the COI natives and more a body for a job

By being de/ungendered within the game it opens up the multifaceted interpretations of who exactly is being exploited and coerced into all of this.

Are they a man or woman traumatizing another woman in this way?

Or are they a “humane” vestige of humanity’s overgrown misogyny, not really a person but the idea of one forced into this violent cycle with the vague notion of a reward?

The convict’s fear of either something breaking into the lung or running out of oxygen mirroring COI’s situation of either running out of resources or dying to some sort of failure on their stations, a perfect microcosm that regardless will be futile

The possibility for the convict to be from Filament station (the COI station made uninhabitable by Eden’s invasion) is another angle to consider, if they're already capturing Edenites, who’s to say some Filament wasn't caught in the mix. Especially in the way that COI is a true democracy with only a couple hundred people, but across a few stations/ships. Do you really know everyone? Or do you just want another body for a job? Especially one who’s friends and family are already presumed a lost cause with the loss of Filament.

And I want to point out in the sm-8 terminal entry, that writer knew and was friendly with the convict. They weren’t alone and now they are. “i know you're next in line for realization in the iron lung, and usually that means you won't be seeing the stars again, but they don't have a sm-8 anymore. they have 3 burner subs, and a lot of curiosity about at-5. and maybe that means you have a chance.” sobbing abt it.
