is this blog still active?
hi! we'll probably return to it at some point... our host got overwhelmed running this blog & it has been radiating toxic fumes for him for a while (adhd moment...), but he has not forgotten about this blog and one day he'll get back on it!! <3 he recognises how important this resource is for people & hopes to find passion for it again soon!

EASTERN FOX SQUIRREL (E. niger)
The Eastern fox squirrel is a large species of squirrel native to North America. It is the largest tree squirrel native to the region, although it is frequently mistaken for its cousins, the eastern gray squirrel & American red squirrel, in their shared ranges.
The Eastern fox squirrel varies in colour depending on region; in most places, its fur is gray ticked with a reddish brown underside. However, in eastern regions, their colours are more striking; black and brown squirrels are common, with white bands on their tails. In the South, pure black squirrels have been seen. Fox squirrel diets depend heavily on the region, but generally speaking, they feed on mast (fallen tree nuts like acorns), tree buds, insects, tubers, eggs, pine nuts, and fruit. They will also eat agricultural crops like corn or wheat.
Are you an Eastern fox squirrel?
Yes
No

APPALOOSA (E. f. callabus)
The appaloosa is a versatile American breed of horse known for its distinct white spotting, genetically caused by multiple patterns overlaid on top of one of the recognised base coats. There are a wide range of body types within the breed, due to the influence from many other horse breeds. The pattern is linked to the leopard complex mutation, which is also responsible for the Appaloosa's genetic predisposition for congenital standing night blindness, a condition where the horse struggles to see clearly in low light conditions.
It was originally developed by the Nez Perce people in North America, although they lost most of their horses during the Nez Perce war. The breed went into decline, although a population was preserved and bred, and now the Appaloosa is one of the most popular horse breeds in North America.
Are you an Appaloosa?

WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA (G. gorilla gorilla)
The western lowland gorilla is a critically endangered species of gorilla that lives in montane forest swamplands in Central Africa. It is the smallest of the gorillas, and is the only species kept in zoos, save for a couple exceptions.
The western lowland gorilla is generally black in colour, with coarse black hair covering their entire bodies. Older males of the species have more colour variation than females, going silver as they grow older. These males are often referred to as silverbacks. Western lowland gorillas are highly intelligent, using tools such as sticks to make acquiring food more convenient. It primarily feeds on plants such as roots, shoots, fruit, tree bark and pulp. It never completely strips an area of vegetation, instead leaving some plants intact to regrow for the next year.
Are you a western lowland gorilla?
Yes

GOLDEN LION TAMARIN (L. rosalia)
The golden lion tamarin is a small species of New World monkey endemic to the coastal forests of Brazil. It is highly endangered, and its entire wild population lives within the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The fur of the golden lion tamarin is long and bright golden. Thick fur, like a lion's mane, frames its face. Unlike monkeys outside of its taxonomic family, Callitrichidae, the golden lion tamarin has claw-like nails rather than blunt ones, minus the one on its big toe which remains blunt. They love to climb, and are extremely proficient at it thanks to their sharp nails. In the wild, it is primarily frugivorous, although they also eat flower nectar, tree gum, and insects.
Are you a golden lion tamarin?
Yes
No

NURSE SHARK (G. cirratum)
The nurse shark is a species of shark living in the United States, The Bahamas, Central & South Americas. Due to its high tolerance for human contact, the nurse shark is an important species for scientific research. Despite this, though, it ranks fourth in documented shark bites on humans, as divers tend to overestimate how much harassment it is willing to endure.
It is solid brown, with light countershading on its underside. Newborn nurse sharks sport a spotted pattern that fades with age. It is an opportunistic predator, feeding on small fish, shellfish, sea urchins, and other marine life, although it may also feed on algae.
Are you a nurse shark?
Yes
No

MANED WOLF (C. brachyurus)
The maned wolf is a large species of canid native to South America, namely Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru & Paraguay. However, it is nearly extinct in Paraguay. Despite its name and appearance, it is neither a wolf nor a fox. Rather, it is the only member of its own genus, Chrysocyon.
The maned wolf is a reddish colour with long, stilt-like black legs and white countershading. It has a short tail and large ears. Along the back of its neck, it sports its titular mane which is tipped with black. It, unlike the wolf, is a solitary animal that hunts alone, typically in the evening depending on the humidity. It will eat rodents, rabbits, reptiles, fish and insects, although the majority of its diet actually consists of vegetation — the wolf apple, a type of fruit, makes up 40% to 90% of its diet.
Are you a maned wolf?
Yes
No

I have a request and a question!
the request: eastern fox squirrel please :)
the question: how do you decide which species to feature?
queued!
it honestly depends; i watch a lot of animal content so if i see something that looks interesting i file it away in my brain to research for the blog later! all recent features have been requests though. i also tend to favour species in my own location when i do non-requests (ex. the Florida black wolf) because i think our native wildlife is interesting :]
thank you guys for 200 followers! i love you all <3
Will extinct species be in the pool of posts on this blog beyond recent extinctions (like the black wolf from the first post)? I’m a couple different paleolithic species and I’d like to see more get talked about because I think it would be really helpful for others who might not know they’re not a species from this era!
(It’s 120 percent chill if not, there’s plenty of species from this era to get the community talking about)
yes! id love to include more past extinctions; the only reason i haven't yet is because nobody has requested one yet. i do have some ideas in mind though!

RESPLENDENT QUETZAL (P. mocchino)
The resplendent quetzal is a small bird species found in Central America & southern Mexico in tropical rainforests such as mountane cloud forests.
Males are green and blue with black innerwings, a red belly and white under the tail. Females also appear green and blue, but their belly is gray and their overall colours are duller. Males also sport long tail feathers, which females lack. The resplendent quetzal is an omnivore, feeding on various laurel fruits and supplementing with small snails, insects, lizards or frogs.
Are you a resplendent quetzal?
Yes

GREAT HORNED OWL (B. virginianus)
The great horned owl is a large, highly adaptable species of owl native to the Americas. It is also known as the tiger owl or the hoot owl.
It is brown, with darker barring and a white patch on the chest. It has a reddish face mask, rimmed with black, and its facial feathers almost form a permanent scowl. True to its name, it has two "horns" on its head, which are actually called plumicorns. Many hypotheses have been formed on the purpose of these plumicorns, ranging from helping the owl identify members of its own species in the dark, camouflage or deterring predators. Different subspecies may vary in colour. It hunts at night, like most owls, primarily hunting voles, rabbits, mice, and even skunks.
Are you a great horned owl?

COOKIE CUTTER SHARK (I. brasiliensis)
The cookie cutter shark is a species of small shark found globally in warm waters near islands, surfacing at dusk before returning to the depths at dawn.
The cookie cutter shark is primarily dark brown, with a lighter underside which emits light, save for a dark collar around its throat and gills. It earned its name due to the way it feeds — using its round mouth full of sharp teeth to bite into prey and gouging out circular chunks of flesh from larger animals. Despite its lifestyle and appearance, it is not considered a threat to humans.
Are you a cookie cutter shark?
Yes

LEOPARD CAT (P. bengalensis)
The leopard cat is a small wildcat native to continental east, southeast & southern Asia. Leopard cat genetics are what gives bengals their signature marbled or rosetted coat.
There are many subspecies of leopard cat, and their colours vary wildly between them to the point that they've been mistaken for a different species altogether. However, the average leopard cat is generally tawny with dark rosettes of varying sizes along their body, and white countershading. It is around the size of a domestic cat, depending on subspecies.
Like all cats, the leopard cat is an obligate carnivore. It tends to prey on rodents, reptiles, amphibians, rabbits and birds. Its activity varies depending on the individual, although most hunt at night in trees.
Are you a leopard cat?
Yes
No

fun thing about being an omnitherian (pleritherian to be specific) is that I get to hit “yes” on all of these
good to know that no matter how niche a creature i post here is, there is always going to be at least one yes on the polls :]
