I expect that, when I become a teacher, I will have a highly diversified student body. Classrooms are growing more and more diverse in the US everyday, and I for one celebrate it and think it can positively change the face of education. However, it also becomes a challenge, because teaching a set of students with so many different skill sets, intellectual levels, and ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds can be intimidating and stressful. Teachers strive to create an equitable and democratic learning environment, but it’s easy for some children to slip through the cracks. All too often, these children are the ones who need the most help or understanding. I think new teaching approaches, paired with innovative technology, can start to bridge the gap for some students. For students who have specific learning barriers, technology can help them fit into mainstream classrooms. As someone who wants to advocate for children with special needs, I think one of the best things we can do is help them learn how to use new technology so they can become more independent, confident, and self-reliant on their own skills and abilities.
