I’m not going to defend Robby’s behavior towards Samira because it was wrong and cruel and deeply, deeply unprofessional. But I also find the reactions to it incredibly ironic. The Pitt is at its core about extreme burnout in the healthcare field, particularly amongst emergency medicine personnel, and how that ripples out and affects absolutely everyone around them—their colleagues, their relationships, the entire community. Over and over again, the Pitt asks of its audience: even in the face of extreme and sometimes unforgivable behavior, can you find the same empathy that is constantly and endlessly demanded of our healthcare providers? And for so many it seems like the answer to that question is a definitive, categorical no. Which funnily enough, is exactly the point the show is trying to make.

Hello my bright eyed bushy tailed intern whom I have decided to hoist onto a pedestal where you cannot realistically maintain this idealized image I have of you without shattering my complete(ly misplaced) faith and adoration in you and thus cause irreparable damage to my already very fragile mental health that will lead to my eventual suicide. Which you will inevitably blame yourself for because you want to save everyone and you want to make me proud but you can't possibly do both because I'm forcing you into a corner you didn't ask to be in. And you're nothing like me so I'm going to leave you with a ghost that is going to haunt the house you will live in and the place you will work in and where you will save lives in and watch people die in and my picture will adorn the wall of everyone who couldn't be saved. And whether I know this or not, I'm going to leave you to fill my shoes and on one no good and very bad day they're going to lead you to the edge of the rooftop and you're going to feel my hand on your shoulder one more time.
