the fact that sohla was hired at bon appetit for $50K/year and doesnāt get paid for video appearances like her white colleagues is digusting. anyways hereās a montage of her cooking circles around everyone at ba pic.twitter.com/uzZsRMGIwf

#from christinaās insta post today itās seems like everyone knew that only the white ppl with shows got paid#for them to always demand help of sohla (and sometimes others) is so thoughtless and at the end of the day abhorrent#and the fact that sohla canāt say no!!!! b/c sheās on camera#she canāt push back#bon appetit#anyway#ba dead to me!!!!#also claire as a PASTRY chef who went to FRENCH PASTRY SCHOOL doesnāt know and refuses to learn how to temper chocolate⦠broā¦. what#and she has said MULTIPLE times iām not worried about tempering anymore sohla can help me#the absolute degradation of labor of color that they all actively do
I also agree with what someone on reddit said about this too:
āThe clips show Sohla being tokenized and exploited in real time. She is clearly planted there for Claire/Brad/whomever to ask leading questions to get conversation going about whatever theyāre making (because having one chef talk the whole time is boring and banter is good TV). And the reason itās Sohla and not Carla or Molly a lot of the time is because sheās a POC and they want to showcase their ādiversity.āā
from @lesbiantophs in the notes:
āwhile this is a good post, christina did not say that everyone knew who was getting paid and who wasnāt. the only people who did know were the directors and the HR department, who apparently were lowkey threatening them to not share the details of their contracts. while this situation is awful, i donāt think itās fair to lay the blame on claire when she hasnāt actually worked at BA since 2018 and only showed up a couple of times a month to record these.
āthe problems here lie in a corporate culture that not only devalues the work contributions of BIPOC, but discourages workers from sharing any details of their contracts with each other. according to molly baz, BA essentially told all of these people that if they spoke about their contracts to each other, HR would be informed. corporate and the directors of these videos are the people who knew what was going on and kept everyone in the dark. they threatened BIPOC.ā
Wow, the foreshadowing
itās crazy cause stuff like this cost money to build and install⦠put the money towards fixing the actual issue
This is wildly unjust and disgusting. If you see these in your community, please say something. Speak to your local organizers and get involved in whatever capacity youāre able.
This level of policing property is toxic. Itās anti-human.
a lot of things like this are also designed to be āartsyā. if you see weird abstract chairs or futuristic styles of subway benches or statues / boulders in little alcoves, a lot of it is intentional to keep people from being able to sit comfortably or lay down in that space. ex:
