Final project "Post mortem"

In reflection of my final project so far, creatively I have struggled greatly but I am proud of myself for giving animation a go. I found it very hard to think visually when communicating my poem because usually I am just using body movements and my voice when I am on stage. Through studying animation, I've learnt that a picture or motion tells a thousand words instead of one word conveying a magnitude of meanings. I thought I could just do some motion movement for a verse of my poem but it lacked interest greatly - I hope to fix this with some snappy camera movements. Also my images were not cohesive - I need to simplify my use of imagery as well and just keep it simple because the poem's genre is horror. According to infamous horror writer, Stephen King, great terror is implied not shown. Maybe if I used some snappy or graphic imagery, I can accomplish this. But so far in my video, I only like my first 10 seconds or so and I want to keep using my mannequin animation sequence. I know my execution won’t be the greatest therefore, I need to keep it simple because it is quality over quantity. I look forward to resubmitting another video for my final project. I know that I’ve chosen not to write this post mortem after creating my final video but the reason why I’ve chosen to write a reflection of sorts now is to shed some light on the feedback I received in our last tutorial and my thoughts at the moment.

No sleep

My poem for my final project 

Four, five… six

Out of youth, vitality and nefarious action

We are chosen

To sleep a sleep no man desires -

Wide awake.

To see in-between the realm of pillows

And dreamy realities the mind -

Cooks and boils 

With no relief insight

To hide behind and pretend

It’s not all real with a pinch of skin.

Seven, eight… nine

The monsters underneath our childhood beds

Are real, whispering whispers about white acid

Pouring in loudly through our ears

To melt the wires connecting thought to tongue

Until sound is nothing but-

A broken tune

Trapped inside a music box 

With no latch to open.

Ten, nine… eight

It is a sleep that feeds the vultures It is a sleep that no man loves

A sleep that knows no class

A sleep that frightens ghosts.

Seven, six… five

Sheep… a flock of sheep

I’m counting by the hundredth thousandth

Hush… don’t fall asleep

  Four, three… two -

One.

  At night I smell -

In-between the hours of midnight and dawn

The dues I pay for continuing to exist

With a guilty gut. 

Like all my screaming

Is no longer believed 

In a world where inaction is free-falling

Within a muddled mind

I am chosen to know

To see -

How one lives

With no sleep.
