You may or may not have already watched the latest Ontario Government announcement where they just gave police the power to do random checks on pedestrians and pull over anyone driving to ensure that they are leaving their house for a necessary reason. If people don’t give their address and why they’re out they will get fined $750.

This will disproportionately affect Black people and people of colour. In this broadcast they also all but explicitly encouraged people to call the cops on their neighbours breaking protocol. DO NOT CALL THE COPS ON YOUR BLACK NEIGHBOURS.

DNA from cave dirt tells tale of how some Neanderthals disappeared

Estatuas cave in northern Spain was a hive of activity 105,000 years ago. Artifacts show its Neanderthal inhabitants hafted stone tools, butchered red deer, and may have made fires. They also shed, bled, and excreted subtler clues onto the cave floor: their own DNA. “You can imagine them sitting in the cave making tools, butchering animals. Maybe they cut themselves or their babies pooped,” says population geneticist Benjamin Vernot, a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA), whose perspective may have been colored by his own baby’s cries during a Zoom call. “All that DNA accumulates in the dirt floors.”

He and MPI-EVA geneticist Matthias Meyer report today in Science that dirt from Estatuas has yielded molecular treasure: the first nuclear DNA from an ancient human to be gleaned from sediments. Earlier studies reported shorter, more abundant human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from cave floors, but nuclear DNA, previously available only from bones and teeth, can be far more informative. I did not care for this adaptation of Northanger Abbey either. Catherine is a slightly flustered, inexperienced 17 year old out on her first trip away from home, who is “almost pretty” on a good day.This is like, her second evening out in Bath and in the book she’s clearly flustered and intrigued by Henry. And Henry? Henry isn’t fishing for compliments the way he is here.

Mori Kei for Girls and Girl-Esque People

I noticed my Mori Kei guide for boys got a lot of recognition.

So I decided to do the same thing for girls!

Feminine Mori Kei is very similar to masculine Mori Kei, but it’s still different. As I covered the history in that last post, I decided to just skip to the inspiration.

Let’s break down what we see here.

-Long dresses and skirts

-Loose clothing fits

-Patterns that don’t necessarily match

-Layering

-Lacey elements

-Crocheted elements

-Knitted elements

-Satchel bags

-Natural fabrics, linen, and cotton, being prevalent

-If a lot of layering isn’t used and is more minimalistic, it has a more vintage feel

-Vintage feels throughout the entire spectrum of feminine Mori Kei clothing

-Natural colours

-Use of little makeup

-Hair not elaborately styled

-Shoes range from loose canvas sneakers to tall boots

This communicates an overall feeling of a natural, airy spirit. So how do we achieve this, friends?

-Look for long sundresses you can layer over short sleeve or long sleeve blouses

-Shop for natural colours

-Find clothes thrifting

-Choose appropriate patterns such as gingham

-Layer. Layer a skirt over a skirt, a dress over a skirt, a skirt over a dress, leggings under a skirt under a dress… The possibilities are endless. Have fun with it!

-Look for vintage elements, like lace trim on long skirts.

-Choose appropriate fabrics, like linen, cotton, bamboo, etc.

-Wear a little makeup if you must, like blusher, a tad bit of mascara.

-Mismatch and match to your heart’s desire

-Look for boots and loose canvas shoes, and other such footwear options.
