“Yes, I am that kid from that movie. Please move on.” -Alfredo “Alfie” McCallister, 16, Junior
Alfie has been acting for as long as he can remember. At the age of six months he had already appeared in several national commercials. By the time he was ten, he had a good resume that involved a couple of guest appearances in some popular shows and a movie or two. When he was eleven, he booked what could be considered his big break. He worked alongside some big name actors in an endearing role that captivated most of its audience. This has been his proudest accomplishment yet. But now, five years later, he is still getting recognized for it. No matter what other projects he gets involved with, no matter who he hangs out with, there is that one person who always asks him, “Hey, aren’t you that kid from that movie?” which ensues in an uncomfortable conversation he no longer wants to have. It’s not that he’s ashamed of it, but no matter how hard he works to shed the image of kid actor (or rather, tiny little Timmy), it follows him around like a shadow. It doesn’t help that according to his parents he hasn’t changed a bit physically from that moment.
He’s always been in and out of school. A few months here, a week there. He supposed it was hard not to notice that one kid that was gone all the time, came back, and disappeared again around the time trailers for movies came out. Every other time some teacher will make a snide remark about his choice of profession. There are times when he wishes he could have a little more stability. Oftentimes his parents tell him that he’s taking what he has for granted. After all, he doesn’t even remember ever telling his parents that he wanted to act. He was simply thrown into it and the show fit. His tendency to up and leave doesn’t leave him with a lot of friends at school. He’s generally quiet and reserved, and becomes restless when he feels like he hasn’t worked in a long time. Even though most people would say that he’s found his talent in life, he doesn’t feel like he can do half the things other students can. Nothing that he does he has ever picked up on his own. He’s led a life where he becomes other people, and sadly, that stuck him with a label and identity that sometimes makes him wonder if he is what he is by choice or by circumstance. Or rather, if he even is anything.
