I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.
He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.
"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.
One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...
Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.
Sokka does not teach or study history, but he does sometimes sit in on lectures about recent history. Whenever he does, several doctoral students flock in to sit near him (even if it's an intro course) so that they can eavesdrop on his grumbling. (No matter how they try, an "overheard utterance" is not a valid source according to their professors. No, we have no sources on the Avatar's bison taking part in combat - sky bison are not war animals and...)
He gets regular deliveries with the Beifong family crest on them, and he goes "sweet, Toph must have found some new minerals" and at this point nobody needs to ask which Toph. He seems to have friends everywhere, literally everywhere. Wang was headed out to this massive swamp to study if it's one big organism, and Sokka told him to find some guy named Hue and "don't mind the loincloth." One time the university gets shut down because the Earth King wants to visit. Oh, visit the University? What an honor- Of fucking course not, he wants to visit Professor Sokka, who yells at him and his royal guards for interrupting his day. The Earth King and his many, many royal guards then sheepishly say sorry and file out.
The last straw is when - not a week after he yelled at the Earth King - the assistant head of the Political Science dept walks in to the faculty lounge to find Sokka having tea with a nice normal man dressed in Earth greens for once, and can't resist a little joke. "Let me guess, you're having tea with the Fire Lord." And then she can instantly tell that she fucked up, because both of them go stock still.
So when the two men awkwardly stand up and proceed to introduce the Fire Lord whose portrait she has in her office because she is the assistant head of Political Science as Li, a server at the Jasmine Dragon, she just says "hello Li" and leaves to find a bottle of something strong.
The 300 level poli-sci final exam at Ba Song Se University is infamous for the airship question. It's an essay question, worth a whole 10 points on a 60 point exam, asking for the primary influences that led to airship technology no longer being used for military purposes after its initial introduction by the Fire Nation during the day of the comet. No matter how the rest of the test changes it's always on the exam, and no one ever gets more than 9/10 on it. Doesn't matter how thorough your knowledge, how compelling and in-depth your essay, how many brilliantly sourced paragraphs you manage to frantically scratch out before the exam period ends. Nine out of ten, never more, with exactly one exception.
Professor Sokka.
Apparently he audited the course when he was originally a student at the university, a few years after the war, and submitted the only response to ever get a perfect score on the airship question during the first year it was included in the exam.
On a dare, you ask if he still has his exam so you can see his record holding essay, and to your surprise he does and he obliges. It's five words long, but only if you include the source as well.
Indicate the primary cause(s) that prevented the pursuit of military airship technology after the hundred year war, with sources. (10 points)
Okay but consider. Scott Goldsmith: Former evil overlord and Isekai protagonist.
Listen! Listen. Something happened. He was sent away. He should be dead. And now he's woken up to a starkly different world with nothing to his name. He has to make allies and learn about the world around him in order to succeed at what he wants.
Like, this is basically canon, it's just not the canon framing. But what if you did frame it that way?
I've been needing a holiday, so I was looking for something fun to do right in my art comfort zone
That and looking back at the Avatar novels... well, what's more in my comfort zone than a bunch of busts?
I absolutely adore designing big sprawling families and figuring out the resemblances. The Avatar style is one of the biggest inspirations for my art style so it's fun trying to turn it back around
Generation versions below because tumblr's absolutely going to eat the quality of this
It just occurred to me with the 'turning Legs is what made Owen willing to die' theory that. in a way. That makes them a perfect demonstration of the distinction between venomous versus poisonous.
If it bites you and you die, that's venomous (Owen)
It you bite it and you die, that's poisonous (Legs)
Wait this is actually even more appropriate because Owen of course injected venom into the situation in Oakhurst at basically every opportunity. He proclaimed how dangerous the vampires were, and how he was going to kill all the humans, and how there could never be peace, and so on an so forth. He destroyed attempts at peace. He was actively going out and seeking to cause harm, much like something venomous will as it hunts.
Doc meanwhile did his best to avoid starting shit. He tried to be calm, to be the voice of reason and keep people from fighting. It's only when he was betrayed like six times in a row that he started reaching for lethal force, and even to the end the only people he properly killed were by accident, and no fault of his own. Even playing with this theory, it is not Doc's fault that Owen decided to eat him. The blame for that lies squarely at Owen's feet.
In nature, poisonous animals are generally very calm, because they know you'll eventually realize that eating them is a terrible idea and let them go. Now, this isn't why Doc keeps sticking himself in extremely dangerous situations (that's the suicidal ideation and the desperation for anything to make up for what he did) but it does match how he interacts with the vampires in the cast. He's calm, he doesn't panic, he just tries to get them to see reason.
Hey so we know how v!Owen gets memories from drinking peopleās blood right? And that ability seems to take effect only a few minutes after consumption. Thatās how he got Legsās memory of poisoning the well, and we all know that Owen turned Legs right after that. But. To turn someone into a vampire you have to drain them of most, if not all their blood. And Iām assuming that much blood would give you access to more memories, a lot more than just a few swallowsā¦
What else do you think Owen might have seen from Legs, in the short period he was alive after turning him? Maybe he saw more flashes of him on the frontlines, or him observing that town after it was destroyed by his doing, or the ceremony where he got that medal pinned to his chest. Maybe he saw Legs burning the medal and his uniform the day after he was discharged, going to medical school and then patching up his war buddies on his second tour, or perhaps glimpses of the 30+ years he spent selflessly and tirelessly helping every person he could. Grieving every patient he couldnāt save, and knowing the ones he did still wouldnāt ever be enough. Maybe he saw the months Legs spent selflessly trying to help everyone in Oakhurst no matter if they were a human or a vampire, caring for this ragtag group of strangers when he had no real obligation to, wearing himself thin as they one by one fell to fear and paranoia. Maybe Owen saw Legs trying to help *him*
Or maybe⦠he didnāt see anything at all. After that single flash of the well (and cc!Owenās confirmed that the blood memories are just brief flashes of a few blurry images and sounds; he might not have even *known* the full extent of Legsās damage with those few gulps he got in), Owen turns Legs and then runs off in hopes that Legs would do his dirty work for him, without even thinking about what could have transpired in the decades between that memory and the present day. And to be honsest, I wouldnāt be surprised if he didnāt *allow* himself to think about it. Owen knew he was going to be dead before the night was over, meeting up with Abolish for the cure right after that one last horrible act. He thought heād be reunited with Louis and never have to think about Legs or whatever he felt for him, or the things heād done to him ever again. So, with that knowledge, maybe Owen suppressed everything he could have had the potential to see, in a desperate attempt to preserve the facade of the monster heād made Legs out to be, the monster heād tried his very hardest to turn him back into?
# this was kinda partially inspired by a conversation in one of the more recent chapters of āInveterationā by Stardastarly on ao3
^ OP's tags
Me banging pots and pans: you should go read Inveteration they're so catastrophically weird about each other in it and how Stardastarly is doing the whole Louis thing is making me rabid
# i think you could definitely spin a narrative where this sudden flood of legs' memories # played a part in him going to abolish to be cure-died # like. oops! you drank too much blood of the passively-suicidal doc and now it's impacting your decisions!

I would love to play with this, it's such a grimly funny way of looking at it. Sorry you tried turning Doc into your weapon of mass destruction Owen. That was a mistake. He's going to kill you now. But not how you think!
Bloodletting mutual KO via assisted suicide is incredible.
ANYWAY. Sorry this is going to be rambly and probably jump all over a bit.
I think his offhand comment to Cleo about 'You should see the kinds of things I have in my head now' (paraphrasing) was only partly true. It seems a bit soon: It took him the rest of that conversation with Legs and then wandering off for a bit to get the flash of the well. I can see him getting an impression earlier than that, though. There's something choosing which memories Owen gets, and maybe he can hone in on specific feelings as he's processing the blood. It would explain how he managed to get the single worst thing Legs ever did on basically the first try he went looking for it.
I personally don't think that's how that works, or the experienced vamps would be using their blood drinking to try and extract strategic secrets from people.
This doesn't mean he didn't get memories, though! It just means I doubt his line about it to Cleo was representative of the memories he got. Because I don't think he can choose the memories that well (if he's even choosing them at all) and I don't think he's getting them that fast.
So...what kinds of memories did Owen eventually get? I think it's up in the air, and a fun question to explore.
Another few data points: It's not just Owen who can absorb memories. Cleo and Scott both indicate they've seen stuff from Pearl and Pyro respectively. And notably, Pyro reports that he absorbed an interest from Shelby. If that's the case, turning people may well give you many more memories (as you posited) but also some aspect of their personality.
(I do kind of headcanon this is part of what killed Owen. He turned one of the most suicidal men in town, and Owen was already pretty suicidal before that. IIRC according to cc!Owen the plan was always to use the force cure to die, but imagine v!Owen was actually earnest about the 'tethered together forever' bit until the very act of tethering himself to Legs gave him the willingness to accept death before his work was done. Legs' soul being the thing to kill the man who ruined him and who he tried so hard to save. It being what allowed him to let go of revenge, in a way. Legs' desire for death being what ultimately made him curable...)
A warning, I have a long queue and donāt know if thereās any Avid stuff in it. If u see any reblogs with Avid in them, odds are it was from the queue. I donāt think heās in there, but I could have forgotten. Iāve never been super invested in his stuff (personal preference reasons, not really an āI knew itā situation), but I was/am invested in characters his character was important to, notably v!Shubble, so thereās a chance heās in there by proxy.
Much love and sympathy to the CCs involved with this, itās hard enough learning this kind of thing without the added publicity. Hoping everyoneās ok <3
