What’s get gonna think of ya then?” He inhaled the toxic substance and blew it out before adding. “2 days, Dazzy, or I’ll come find ya in a week, your decision.”

“Jus’ like you decided children was too much responsibility for ya.” Shoving the cash into the pocket of his trousers, Daz picked up his duffle bag and once more slung it over his shoulder. “He’ll understand...an’ he won’t think me no less a man for doin’ what I need ta help us survive by ourselves. -- I’ll think about it, Charlie. Now leave, yeah?”

Charlie took Darren’s hand and placed the roll of cash into it, “First,” he said, careful not to gloat the sound of his victory. “Go get some pizzas for ev’one, yeah? Then meet me at 32 Charleston street in two days. I have a birthday gift for you.” He gave a shrug, “After that, we’ll see. Like I said, all I want are my boys with me.”

“...Me birthday ain’t for another week and a half.” Daz briefly contemplated tossing the roll of cash back at his father, but knew doing so would be extremely stupid on his behalf and dangerous for Duggy. “An’ what th’ hell’m I s’posed to tell Dug about why I’m home so early? He knows I take every shift I can and I told him the bar was short staffed for the next few weeks.”

It was possible he was just coming up with excuses, but Daz didn’t much care because he knew how strange it was to prefer stripping to taking a load of cash off his deadbeat father.

“Yet here you are, with all your secrets. Taking off your clothes and sellin’ yer body jus’ t’ keep Duggy fed. Seems lot like ya need a dad to me.” He pulled out a roll of cash and held it out to him, “I could make yer life lots easier Darren. We could help each other. Could keep Duggy safe.” The implication that the boy wasn’t safe was clear. He didn’t need to outright threaten anyone.

His eyes fell to the money and Daz was prepared to give a vehement response before his brain processed the all too obvious implication, his blood running cold and stomach turning itself into vicious knots. “How could I possibly help you, Charlie?” He questioned after a moment, his tone not quite resigned, but definitely getting there, he wasn’t agreeing just yet.

He could feel the agitation rolling off of him and stepped closer to his child, “Oh Dazzy, don’t you understand. I only want what every father wants, to be close to my sons. I was a git, thought this was my second chance on life. That life means nothing without my children. I’ve already lost Nina. Didn’t want to lose you both too.” The lies and truth blurring together in such a way that made it near impossible for him even him to distinguish.

Darren let out a derisive snort and dropped his duffle bag to cross his arms over his chest, back straightening to better look his father in the eye. “Only took ya fifteen years t’ find us, dad. We’ve grown since ya lef’ and we don’t need ya anymore, for nothin’.” Nose twitching, Daz took a small step back, forcing the slight nervousness he felt in the pit of his belly away; Charlie was too close for comfort. “With or without me and Duggy your life means nothin’ and we both know that.”

The comment made his eye twitch and Darren could feel the wolf begging to rip the FANGER in their presence to p i e c e s. “He don’t want ya in his life, and I sure as shit don’t wanna hear bout how much I fuckin’ look like ya. You left us. You can claim tha’ you ain’t had no choice, but I can smell the lie on ya, Charlie. Dug? He’s too young and naive to know ‘ow deception smells like, but not me. -- Now. Charlie had waited for him outside the strip club, he could track down his children for miles, but knew he’d never control either of them if he couldn’t get a handle on his elder son first.

“I know, I know,” he said as he followed to the door, looking out it. “I promise not t’ cook, and I wouldn’t let nobody in. Hurry or you’ll be late.” He gave him one last smile before closing and locking up the front door. At least the night had ended on a good note.

douglas chuckled and gave a nod, “nah,” he laughed, “you were always the favorite. she used to brag about you. i ‘member going to shelly’s and she’d talk about how proud she was of her ‘little bloke,’ how she didn’t need any other man her life b’sides you… wonder how shelly’s doin’ now,” he said, reminicing on what little memories he had. “’s prolly why i always looked up t’ ya so.”

which darren felt immensely bad for as he knew he wasn’t the best person to look up to; he was trash, not stupid. keeping that tidbit to himself, of course, daz spoke after a moment, “she’s alright... i call ‘er every once in a while, she asks about ya, but i never know if you’d wanna talk to ‘er, y’know? but i could give you her number when we get home.”

duggy wanted to argue, say daz’d be better off without him, could live for himself, but some small part of him knew that daz was right. they’d only had each other for so long that they didn’t know how to be without the other. “i’ll be fine, just… gonna sleep early. maybe i’ll watch the video when i get up… be safe, ya?”
