Lapis was quiet as the girl dragged her to pick out some snack. She was hardly paying attention, her nicotine addiction in full force. She was surprised when the other led them outside, but certainly didn’t argue. Within seconds, she lit up a cigarette and slipped it between her lips. A deep inhale seemed to immediately erase the anxiety she had other this strange woman. Sure, she was odd but she seemed harmless enough.
It wasn’t until a couple puffs later that she noticed the nuzzling against her arm. She looked down and frowned, unsure what to do. Any other woman she wouldn’t known this to be a hint but Pearl was so…. innocent?
Her arm lifted to the bench behind the other, not quite setting her arm around the other but enough to open up her space. “That all you’re eating?” She asked, nodding to the tiny bag of chips. No wonder why she was so skinny.
Pearl didn’t have much of an appetite and so instead of eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, she preferred to snack throughout the day, keeping these mini-meals light enough to just hold her over until the next one.
She looked up at Lapis and put down the chips, reaching into her bag to pull out a sketchpad and repositioning herself so that she was facing the blue-haired girl, her legs crossed and the pad in her lap. Unclipping a pencil from the metal spiral that held the pages together, she went to work, her gaze flitting back and forth between the pad and Lapis.

Lapis barely had a second to take in the words there on screen before she was tugged forward by the other. Her mouth opened to protest, but she was heading that way anyway. Her shorter legs stumbled a little at fast before she fell in line with the other.
“Uh, who we?” She asked behind the other. “You and me, we?”
She knew Lapis wasn’t one to eat lunch, she’d watched her enough times to be aware of this. In truth, had she been more discreet or secretive about observing the other, it likely would have come off as rather creepy, but her genuine open interest made it lack any sinister impressions.
Pearl nodded, looking back to smile softly at her as she lead Lapis along, pausing in front of a vending machine to buy a bag of chips. Finally she stopped outside at a bench on campus and sat down, tugging Lapis down next to her and scooting over so their bodies were touching while she ate, looking up at her every so often and brushing her warm cheek against Lapis’ shoulder.

Lapis couldn’t figure out what this girl wanted. She never tried to come onto her, just small passing comments that through her mind in a whirl. Lapis rarely had time to ask her what was going on, as she was so often whisked away by her loudmouth friends.
Class was dreadful, but she was grateful to hear the bell that signaled them for lunch time. She haphazardly threw her bag over arm before heading to the door. And sure enough, there stood the quiet girl, beaming.
Lapis looked behind her, checking to make sure it was in fact her that she was waving to. When she saw no one there, she approached the girl with one quirked brow disappearing under her messy bangs. “Uh, hey?”
Pearl looked up at Lapis and pulled out her phone, typing out a message which she then held up to the other’s face.
We’re having lunch.
The second Lapis was done reading, she reached out and took her hand, intertwining their fingers together and started down the hall, pulling the blue-haired girl along behind her.

Lapis had no idea what to do with this girl. The swimmer was no innocent flower and every interaction she had with women thus far had been much more straight forward. Do you like me? Yes, no, whatever. This silent girl was a never ending sea of questions to her.
She already knew the other could not speak, which was fine. She would communicate with little notes, all small and complimentary in nature. This one was no different, complimenting the dyed blue hair.
Her brows knit as she read it, turning to watch the little one leave. She huffed, unable to follow the other now as she had to head to class. Even more so, she despised both of her cohorts for various reasons. She couldn’t understand why this little brunette thing would hang around with them.
She sat between her counterparts as usual so when they inevitably began to argue at a level that would begin to disturb others Pearl would simply reach out and place her hands over their mouths, silencing them. She didn’t mind the apparent dislike they had for each other because she knew that they didn’t actually hate each other. They certainly wouldn’t spend nearly as much tie around each other if that was the case, but it helped for her to be there as a kind of peacekeeper.
They both knew sign language, having made the effort to learn it upon meeting her, which made them two of only a few people she could carry on a group conversation with since her other method of writing or typing out responses was more suited for one-on-one talks. It amused her how quickly they learned, their near constant need to compete with each other actually aiding them in the task.
Both of them had tried to dissuade her from her interest in Lapis to no avail, another thing that made her laugh since they so rarely agreed on anything. And though they still looked on disapprovingly, they knew they couldn’t change her mind as she skipped down the hall toward Lapis’ class, which was letting out as well. Leaning against the doorframe, she waited for the blue-haired girl to emerge, waving cheerfully at her when she emerged and falling in step next to her.

Despite the hair that seemingly completely blocked her vision, the pink-clad cheerleader leaning against the wall could see perfectly fine. Rather it was her voice that quite literally escaped her as her vocal cords had been irreparably damaged when her umbilical cord had gotten wrapped around her throat, leading to a necessary premature birth.
Still, Pearl was not withdrawn nor did she keep to herself and had quite a few friends, communicating by both sign language and more commonly her phone where she would type out whatever she wished to say. Quite amazingly there were two other girls, also cheerleaders who shared the same name as her and the Pearls hung out together most of the time.
The others were currently in an argument, a common occurrence with the pair, which left her free to scan the hallway for the target of her affections. Upon spotting her, Pearl skipped over to the girl others gave a decent berth and stood right in front of her as she fished around in her bag for a few seconds. Finally she produced a folded piece of paper which she then placed into the girl’s hand before skipping off to class with the other Pearls.
The paper, which was one of several the girl had received from Pearl so far, had a simple note written on it.
