The various spirits from Too Many Spirits and their compositions
Imagine:
You click on the newest episode of Postmortem. Everything goes as it usually does, the boys answer questions, there’s banter all throughout, and hilarity ensues. After a while, the end of the video seems to come near, Ryan starting, “That does it for this episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved Postmortem,” and continuing on with the usual outro—but something is off. Something is different. Out of the corner of your eye you see Shane fiddling around, bringing his phone up and tapping with intent, an action he hasn’t seem to have done at the end of a postmortem in a while. Your heart leaps, and as your gaze becomes glued on Shane, Ryan’s shifts and fixes on him as well, and he goes quiet for a moment before murmuring, “Wait… wait a minute…” A cheeky yet giddy smile then appears across Shane’s lips as he shifts in his seat, bringing his phone up as he situates himself before resting his elbows on the table. He then looks down at his phone and begins to speak. “Our weekly Q and A concluded, I now welcome you to the part of the show we call…” he pauses for dramatic effect and looks right into the camera, and your breath hitches, heart beating frantically as you move your lips to whisper along with him: “The Hot Daga.”
(Character Growth Anon here) yup, I agree. It’s why fandoms eg One Direction & kpop have so much RPF — Cuz their personalities are so strictly controlled by management, to make them palatable and marketable for teen girls. This allows them to be blank slates for teens to project anything they want onto them. It’s actually kind of horrifying. I’m glad S & R are able to be more genuine and unfiltered now. They’re amazing creators and I love them for THEM, without having to make shit up.
You're right it's totally horrifying. There are so many issues in fandom and celebrity culture that get so normalized it's real upsetting. Like, fans themselves are victims of dehumanization too because their identity becomes their fandom, their mental health gets destroyed, and because some creators abuse their loyality and see them as means for profit instead of human beings. Its really a everyone-gets-hurt situation.
Something to support the argument that shipping RPF of RB and SM is dehumanizing: I used to ship shyan, in the early days (2017-2018), when BFU wasn’t as big a show, and S & R didn’t have the BuzzFeed clout to show more of their personalities on camera (only a squeaky clean internet friendly version). But flash forward to when they’ve started watcher, told a lot of personal stories on camera, and bc their personal lives are so well-fleshed out in my mind, I can’t ship them bc they’re too REAL.
Hmm almost like the dehumanization of creators by external executive forces contributes to the dehumanization in the fandom. This is a tale as old as time from Hollywood to YouTube production companies. Celebrities can't be humans! They have to fit into these very rigid boxes so they can fill the audience needs!
The only company I see reject this well, besides Watcher, is Polygon (because they're unionized big surprise).
Youtube attracts an audience because the parasocial relationships it creates and that's not always a bad thing. People feel like they KNOW creators because authenticity is The Brand and appeal of youtube. When it's real authenticity it works great, but when people are limited (by their higher ups or by their own greed to make mass appeal content) that only contributes to humans becoming idols and fictional characters for the audience to play with and feel entitled to. There is nothing wrong with youtubers having personas, they all do in a way, but when it becomes what the audience forces or when the creator uses it to be manipulative then...no, that shit ain't good.
The sad thing is, good creators can still get objectified and dehumanized by their audience no matter how many boundaries they draw because the audience has been taught that thats okay because "that's how its always been" (the lamest excuse for this BS and I'm tired of seeing it). There needs to be a total systematic shift for this to change but talking about it amongst ourselves and staying critical is helping move that mountain one rock at a time.
Sorry I got carried away like I do. I'm glad you came to this realization and changed your mind. It's a large step in the right direction! I hope it was enough of a paradigm shift to change how you approach all creators you follow. They shouldn't have to prove their humanity to be treated like humans and I hope you've learned that, too.
am I the only one who finds it really fucking weird when Instagram accounts change their profile pic to the same profile pic as eg: Ryan’s, and make their username really similar to Ryan’s username??? It’s so weird and creepy, if someone did that to me I’d be kinda put off
Okay that's really weird but I've never seen it. I dont doubt that it exists because I definitely don't spend any time with the fandom (like I haven't checked this blog in MONTHS) and I don't check Shane and Ryan's mentions. But yeah thats hella weird. I understand having fan accounts and having icons of creators faces but like...mimicking them and using their profile pic? That's sus af.
I know it's from like a year ago... but that sexy rat video is KILLING me. I've watched it so many times and it does not stop being funny. I tip my hat to you
thanks! I’ve watched it myself many times and still think it is the best thing I have ever made! I’m glad you enjoy it!
what do you feel about shipping shane and sara? i ship them too but i guess it feels weird and wrong? obviously, i don't ship shyan but what about real life couples?
I think they are a sweet couple and their height difference is fucking adorable and I get little butterflies when they post about each other. And I love how supportive Shane is when it comes to Sara's AMAZING art. But I wouldn't call it shipping? Because you're just happy for a couple who are happy? It's more like...being supportive of their relationship and celebrating it.
Still not okay with fic about them, obviously. That's still dehumanizing.
And...they need to be treated like their own seperate beings too. Sara has mentioned that a few times because people keep assuming and projecting that everything she does and all her art is centered around Shane which is just...so disrespectful. Thats really upsetting because she's such a talented and worthwhile person on her own and people who call themselves fans constantly shove her into the "Shane's girlfriend" label.
Anyway sorry for ranting but yeah, just be supportive and don't project your own "headcanons" on to them, it doesn't need to have fandom terms attached to it.
also, from the Here's What You Do podcast (the one about flirting), they - all three - were pretty clear *not* romantic, just platonic love, and you'd think that would be clear for people, instead I've seen "aw they no homo'd it"
oh god it annoys me so much when people think a dude rejecting a disgusting ship between him and his friends means he’s homophobic
and the “no homo” phrase is rooted in homophobia. Guess what? it’s not homophobic to be uncomfortable with the the idea of someone wanting you to bang your best friend! there is nothing homophobic with valuing your friendship with someone so much that you don’t like people undervaluing it by assuming you’re lOvERs! there is nothing homophobic about platonic love.
There sure is something homophobic and fetishistic about fantasizing about every pair of male friends having a sexual/romantic relationship. Perverted men do it all the time with female friendships. It’s the same behavior just dressed up in a different “woke” justification. It’s still dehumanization.
(uhm) probably shouldn't write you this but I will anyway because i see your point about shipping real people but. I have a counterargument. I don't think people make the argument that they *should* or *are* in a romantic or sexual relationship in real life, but that it is entertaining to imagine if they were. The way i see it is that people imagine their "celebrity persona", which is constructed you know, to be in a relationship, and think of how that would play out. Idon'tseeitasdisrispectful
No. You don't see my point. If you did you wouldn't ignore my points about the dehumanization that occurs with rpf and rps. As I have said, multiple times, it is not just about their comfort and consent. That is an important part of his discussion for sure, but it is not the only part of it.
You know what this choice to treat real humans like fictional characters reflects? It reflects disrespect for humanity. It turns them into objects for someone else's control. Human beings are not puppets, they have autonomy. And "fans" have no right to claim control over their narrative to satisfy their own sick cravings.
Do you think its healthy for someone who claims to be a "fan" to pervert someone's humanity? Do you think that is healthy behavior for someone to participate in? To take someone's identity and turn it into some kind of fucked up self-serving object of fantasy? Those who ignore these criticisms and claim to be victims are only victims of their own deluded, entitled, and self-serving ignorance. My hope that they can grow and learn some self-awareness is weak...but I still hope they will learn. Because it's not self-care, it's self-destruction.
I don't support that behavior and I will always be openly critical of it. Always.
between the hotdaga, puppet history, and whatever the heck those cars tweets are, shane madej truely is one of the most interesting and exciting storytellers of this generation
the fact that she has to keep repeating this is a bit fucked tbh.
Well, even though that’s dripping with sarcasm and definitely not genuine, I’ll take it.
Our first theory is the official grand jury verdict of her death, that Thelma Todd died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
i saw no one posting this and that alone is a crime
— Can I say? Can’t be doing that. — You know, obviously, but it is a thing of the times. — … You can’t be doing that. — I mean you see what I’m saying though, right?
