Whose fault lead to this ? -----Talking about a movie <Bad Genius>
The movie offers subtle yet stinging insight into Thailand’s class inequalities and corrupt school system. Inspired by real-life news of students cheating on the SAT, the film transplants film structure to a school-exams setting.
The movie opens with math prodigy Lynn earning her way into an exclusive, expensive high school with brains and bold moves that leave her father embarrassed but proud.According to the plot in Wikipedia. There, she is be friended by the good-nature but academically challenged Grace. Lynn begins helping Grace cheat in exams after finding out that there teacher has been leaking questions in private tutoring sessions, she is then approached by Grace’s boyfriend Pat, who offers payment in exchange for also helping him and his friends. Although at first reluctant, Lynn agrees when she finds out that the school took payments of “Tea money” from her father, who earns a modest income as a teacher. Later, Pat and Grace ask her to help them cheat in the STIC---an international standardized test for university admissions----a scheme which will earn them millions of baht. Lynn and Bank will fly to Australia in order to get a head start on the exams, which are held globally on the same day, and send back answers for Pat and Grace to distribute to the clients. Returning home, Lynn finally decides to come clean, tearfully confessing to her father, who comforts her and helps her redeem herself by submitting a formal confession to the STIC organization.
Bad genius is a showcase of everything great cinema is capable of. It is a complex look at young hopes and social status wrapped around a rocket ship of a high concept. The film takes “exam” to connect the students and school. It tells that whether your grade is high or low, whether your family is rich or poor, you are judged only by your grades, which is absurd. In addition, the film also reveals the shameless action that school declare the fair of the education, but charges a high number of extra fees. The film reflects the problem prevailed in the society, which refers to the uneven distribution of educational resources and the high unreasonably fees for school.
This is a cleverly conceptualized film tackling social demarcations in the educational system. Though it sometimes revert back to “Thai sentimentality” as per my partner, I personally felt that the motivations of the characters to commit what they did were present.
Lynn has perfect intelligence with high grades but suffers from the problem of money. However, her friend Grace who pass the exam by cheating is academically challenged could go aboard for study easily. The obvious comparison should be taken into reflection that whether a test can measure one’s ability well and fairly, or it just the machine to destroy one’s creativity.
Bank and Lynn experience the desire for money, fear of the high fees. Audience can see that they are attracted with each other. But they can get into a step closer. Because they both know each other’s dilemma, suffer from the unfair, share with the same failure experience. They can’t build up a relationship, or even become couple. In this sense, the pity in their teen times may be the result of the educational system. Grades, exams can decide everything, and everybody strive for it at any cost. As a result, they can not enjoy the simple and joyful relationship.
We all see it clearly that education is having a problem, which brings teenagers much pain and harm. And I think if the educational environment become better in the future, teenagers will enjoy their life much better, not worrying the shortage of money.
