Weekly challenge #14 - THE LAST ENTRY What is Earth Science to you? Over the course of studying Earth Science for the first semester of our Grade 11 journey, we have acquired new learnings about the world and the planet that we live in. Earth science teaches us the value and worth of our planet. From the deepest and innermost of the planet to the soaring skies high above us. Each organism whether how big or small, plays a big role in our ecosystem. Every drop of water is already a blessing. These are just some of the learnings that I have gained. Most of all, Earth Science teaches us awareness of our actions because these actions have equivalent effect to our environment. One small wrapper of candy thrown on the street can mean disaster. One spray of aerosols can greatly affect the atmosphere. We need to be mindful of our actions. Complacency is not something we should continue to do, as early as now, if you know you can change the world, do it! You are a part of the world, and you were brought here to make a change for the betterment of the whole planet. This is what Earth Science is to me. It's learning, doing, and making change. 👍 Adiós amigos!

Weekly challenge #12 Philippines, our country, is geographically situated in an area that is prone to natural calamities. The weather here is unpredictable, suddenly it rains and then it shines. My worst weather experience happened 2-3 weeks after classes started. It was a Friday and during Fridays, we have our P.E. classes so we get to go home later than we usually do. It started raining so hard and we were stranded in school. I was with a friend from Block K since we were both from Compostela. We waited for the rain to subside but it never did, so we waited for a jeepney outside the portal. An hour passed but we weren't still able to hail a jeepney, we were already soaked in the rain. At last, we found a Consolacion jeepney, we planned to get off at Consolacion and ride another jeepney to Compostela. We were stuck in traffic for 40 mins and when we arrived at Oakridge, the driver said that he couldn't pass through the flood so he had to drop us off. We looked at the flood and were stunned, it was waist-high. So we decided to go back to Talamban and then to Canduman. There were no 13C jeepney and then we had to walked in the rain until we reached Cabancalan, it was a 2 or 3 kilometer walk. Our shoes were filled with water and we were already shivering. Fortunately we arrived at Tintay and rode a tricyce to Canduman. We then rode a jeepney to Compostela after waiting for about 20 mins. We arrived home at about 9 or 10 in the evening. Our bags were filled with water, so as our shoes. The morning after, I got sick. That was the worst weather experience I had.

Weekly challenge #11 Over the course of building our earth-quake proof building, we somehow managed to showcase our individual skills in creating a strong building. We unified and helped each one in our group so that we could come up with a high-quality product. In building our tower, we were only given limited materials. So we planned and strategized it very well. We used the cardboard as our base and the straws as our main frame. We fastened the straws to the base by using the paper clips. In order to connect the straws, we used pins and paper clips, we inserted them inside the straws and pin them against each other. We used the string as the flooring for our building and also to tie the top floor to the base so that it would stay in place once tested. As shown in the picture above, the structure of our building is unique. We have an outer support and an inner support on the first floor, this is to make sure that the building is strong and well-supported. Through our cooperation and critical strategy, we succeeded in making sure that our building is well-made and the results were satisfying. It was quite a good experience.

Weekly challenge #10

After watching the documentary, I gained new insights and lessons regarding the rising extinction of certain species. To answer the question, the one thing I would change with my lifestyle is the fact that I am being complacent about this issue. To take part in this movement, I will lessen my consumption of burgers, corned beef and other products made from meats of animals especially cows which emit methane into the air. Also, I will not throw my trashes into bodies of water to prevent thedestruction of the natural habitat of marine species. Lastly, I will not promote and patronize the use of products such as bags, shoes, jewelries tjat are made out of endangered and rare species, and encourage others to do as well.

Weekly challenge #8

1. At first I thought it would be weird to use only 15 dippers of water, but after I finished doing the task, it felt accomplishing. Knowing that I could do so much with just 15 dippers of water, I felt confident that I can apply it and make it a daily routine. I felt like I already helped Mother Earth with just one small gesture. 2. Yes, this is something I can do long-term since it’s easy and applicable. 3. For me, as early as now, we should be taking preventive and proactive measurements against water shortages. At this very moment some areas in our country are experiencing water shortages. And it is just appropriate that we help lessen this issue by doing our part and minimize too much use of water. In any way that we can, we must do our best to conserve and reuse water, may it be in our home, school, office and public areas.

Weekly challenge no. 7

On my own point of view, these areas within the campus have the tendencies to fail, since: 1. These slopes show past evidences of slope failures as depicted by the rubbles I found on the bottom of it and the part where there is a missing part of soil and where there is a protrooding roots of a tree. 2. The area, although not prone to flood, is prone to rain especially nowadays that the weather is very rainy. 3. The slope was too steep. 4. There is a change of slope as shown by the continous falling of debris and rubble from the upper part of the slope to its bottom part.

1. Since the land is highly arable, meaning rich in agriculture, I plan to have an orchard and a mini farm, where I can plant a variety of plants and trees. This is to take advantage of the arability of the soil. 2. Also, since the land is rich in mineral deposits, I do not have any plan to disturb nor to abuse this, rather, I do plan to enhance and take advantage of its richness by planting certain types of plants just so that the minerals won't be of no use. 3. Since the area is found in a very good commercial area, I plan to make half the land as a recreational resort, wherein people can hold their team buildings, leadership trainings or any kind of recreational activity. In that way I am not just earning money, but I am also making use of the land rather than abandoning it and just let the grass grow higher than trees. Also, in that way, I can help the public by providing them a place of recollection, a place of retreat, a place where they can enjoy the company and beauty of nature and have fun at the same time. 4. To make use of the clean, fresh river found on that piece of land, I will build an irrigation system in order to water my mini farm. In that way, I can take advantage of nature's gift but also keeping in mind to never abuse what nature has provided us.

The name of my mineral is Vitanium (from the Latin word "vitae" or "vita" meaning "life". It has no cleavage. Its color is blue-green. Its luster is metallic. If mined and gathered, this mineral, when processed appropriately, will be used as medicine to treat cancer since this contains the essential nutrients and components which can combat cancerous cells. But one must keep in mind that this mineral is highly radioactive, which means, it would be a great pain to mine and gather this. (This makes it very expensive)

You see, rocks are just like humans, neglected and set aside. People don't realize the importance of rocks and their worth. I can relate myself to a rock because like rocks, I am a hard, stong and tough woman, yet many don't notice this since they don't tend to care. They see me as a vulnerable and gullible person yet they do not know me at all. I am underestimated and stereotyped. Also, like a rock, I may not seem to be attractive on the outside, but I know deep within me is diamond hidden beneath a pile of mud, awaiting to be discovered. Lastly, like a rock, I am capable of going through change and metamorphosis. All in all, I AM STRONG, I SHINE, I AM VERSATILE.😀

I came to school on the first day not knowing what to expect and how this school year is going to be. I have never studied in the city nor lived in it. I was born and bred a Compostelanhon.

On the first day, I sat at the back of the classroom and kept quiet. I didn’t know anyone in my class. Some of my classmates were all smiles and some were already talking (I assumed they knew each other already). I just sat there and smiled occasionally when someone looks at me. It was overwhelming and I just felt lost and out of place. I didn’t have someone to talk to. Days passed and thank God I met new friends. I never expected to meet and have new friends (I felt like a loser so yeah). Weeks gone by and I never knew SHS life was this stressful, assignments just keep pouring in! But now that I had friends, I have someone to have lunch with (yey!) and somehow having them just makes this journey more fun.

All in all, my first month at school has been fairly fun, it was a rocky start though. I just hope I make it to the end of the semester alive (hahaha). God bless my grades!

BIOSPHERE

Positive: We own 2 dogs and 3 cats. And everyday I feed them 3 times a day.

-I will continue to feed them as long as I can and treat them with care just as I do to people.

Negative: I pick flowers (which I know are living things) in the streets, plazas or parks.

-I learned my lessons, I’m not picking them anymore. They should just stay as they are, plus, they look beautiful when they’re not picked.

HYDROSPHERE

Positive: On rainy days, we collect rainwater through barrels and pails, and we use it for flushing the toilet or for cleaning our car.

-It is very timely that we are experiencing heavy rains nowadays, and it is very efficient and cost-friendly to use collected rainwater for household purposes. I will continue to do this since it will help us to save for our water bill while using less water.

Negative: There are days that I use too much water when I take a bath.

-I will minimize using too much water when bathing, brushing my teeth or other activities that makes use of water.

ATMOSPHERE

Positive: I do not ride smoke-belching vehicles as often as I could (well, except when I go to school).

-I will ride my bike or ride “sikad” (or just walk) more often when I go somewhere that’s just near.

Negative: I use aerosol perfumes (which aren’t good for the air).

-I will minimize using these and just stick to colognes since they’re not aerosols.

GEOSPHERE

Positive: I do not promote and support quarrying or mining.

-We (including I) should never support mining or quarrying since it destroys the mountains and other land forms by digging and selling it. (It causes soil erosion as well.)

Negative: I throw garbage everywhere.

-I am truly guilty and I regret doing so. From now on, I swear with all of my heart that I will never ever throw garbage just anywhere since it clogs the drainage system (which may lead to flood, yikes! total nightmare).

I always find myself thinking of who I really am, so who am I in the midst of the universe?

No one really knows where we came from or how we came to be. In Science, I learned that we are humans, and that biologically speaking, we are made up of cells and tissues and organs and systems and we are so complex in every way. In our Religion class, I learned that we were made by God in His image and likeness. But somewhere in the middle I still get confused. We never really know who we are. No matter how hard we try to analyze and think of it, we have never reached the point wherein we fathom the complexity of life. We are just specks of dust within the galaxy as I should say it.

Well, personally, I think I am who I am. I am what I love, I am what I dream of, and I am what I aspire to be----and this is who I am in the midst of the universe. How about you?
