A comic from 2019 originally done for Razorcake.
From 2019. When I saw Jaime Hernandez.
My nibling Robby has died. They were twenty years old. Robby and I were not blood related. For those not in the know, I am very close with my friend Holley's kids. I've known Robby since they were fresh from the hospital. The absolute quietest baby (or at least when I was around).
Robby was really into Steely Dan, The Kinks, and for a long while, ska. The kid was not pretentious when it came to music. They would listen to anything you threw at them. We both loved a 1950's novelty Halloween record that I would later make bootleg CD's for them and various other friends. Robby and I attempted to carve pumpkins together every year. They even convinced me to fly to San Francisco once to hang out on Halloween. They said if I came, they would make chili. It was very sweet of them. They came to Bloomington, the year after. We also shared the love of all things Pee-Wee which their housemates apparently hated. I would send Robby Pee-Wee related things in the mail for the walls of their home. I was stoked when Robby got into Star Trek and we had more to chat about. As of recent, Robby was older and would rather hang out with their friends and not their weird old friend-uncle. But when I would come to the DFW area I would always make time for them and they would make a little time for me, even if it's absolutely what they didn't want to do. Last time we hung out, we went to garage sales and I bought them a burrito. They would always hug me way too hard when we parted. They were a very sweet, charismatic kid who quiet but friendly to most people. They were always down for impulsive adventuring. Robby was a culinary master and would invite their friends over on weekends for soup and board games. They were really into the DUNE books but had never seen the David Lynch version. I feel like I finally convinced them to watch it after I mailed them the Toto soundtrack. I think they watched it on their birthday with friends. Robby was insanely photogenic but I will not post their photo on these social media sites because they would not approve. They were handsome as hell (they hated when we would tell them that, but they also knew it). There's so much more I can say. Robby was just a very good kid. Had their faults, but for the most part good, caring, considerate, and easy going.
Love you Robby.
