YAGA FAMILY
this will always be so important to me
I have thought about this so much today
If I was rose I would’ve accidentally pushed him further in the closet by agreeing to peg 😭 sorry to get in the way of your self actualization Shane
Okay actually all joking aside, imagine it for a moment. If the first time Rose and Shane had sex she asked if she could peg him, they probably both could have actually been spared the terrible sex - not because pegging him would make the sex good, but because they wouldn't have ended up having sex.
The first time, Rose is like I better come clean about how I prefer to fuck guys now or this isn't going to work. So Rose says okay, there's this thing I usually like to do with guys. You might think it's weird. But I really want to try it if you're okay with that. Not tonight, of course we don't have to tonight, but in the future. And then she says she'd like to peg and explains what that means, and Shane is secretly like wow this is great maybe I'll actually enjoy the sex this time maybe this is the problem wow she really is perfect for me but he also knows that this is not something a straight NHL player would immediately be down for, so he acts like he isn't really sure what it is, and then is like I don't know are you sure you want this oh well I guess fine I'll do it for you.
But then he says let's wait until we have everything, you know, since that's what Rose wants and Rose is surprised but she's like well okay great.
And then another night, they go to do it, and Shane is just not very good at hiding how familiar he is with the process at all. She asks him if he knows how to use a douche and he has to admit that he douched before she even got there. And she goes hmm. Okay then. And then she goes to grab her own dildo but he's like no I have one I bought uhh after we talked. You can use that one. And she's even more like ok um. You - you know already you prefer that one? Okay... And then he shows it to her and it's fucking flesh tone and veiny and huge.
And she goes okay, I guess my boyfriend just didn't want to admit to me that he's done this before and likes it. Right? That must be it.
But then when he gets on his knees in front of her, it's in a very practiced and routine way, and he defaults to situating his ass in the air much higher up then someone Rose's height could reach and looks surprised for a second before adjusting to be lower.
And she goes okay. Maybe - Maybe we should have a quick chat. I just gotta double-check something lmaoooo.
I didn't see the Rachel Reid post before, omgggggg. The way she talks about Shane is SO CRAZY AND ACTUALLY UNIRONICALLY EITHER RACIST OR ABLEIST OR BOTH 😭😭 I low-key thought people were maybe exaggerating, that it's impossible for her to straight up say "Shane's not smart", yet here we are. Like idc if she "only" said Shane's not "*very* smart", that's not how that works here... Once again, if I were HW reading that, I'd curse this woman for 3 generations, lmfao....
I don't think it was ableist because I don't believe Rachel Reid intentionally made Shane autistic. She definitely didn't intentionally make him autistic before the first book, so she was not subconsciously being influenced by a negative perception of autistic people when she wrote that list.
As for Reid saying Shane is not very smart... here's the thing.
Sometimes characters are stupid and the fact that their writers made them stupid is not inherently indicative of something malicious or ignorant. Sometimes characters are stupid because they are meant to represent real people and real people are stupid sometimes.
Writers are also not required to love their characters or to make their characters lovable or to give their characters traits people generally admire even if the character in question is meant to be empathetic. In fact, one of the harder lessons I had to learn when I was going to school for writing is that if I love my character too much, it actively makes my writing weaker. (Reid is a clear example of this with Ilya. The fact that he's her precious baby makes the whole series worse).
And, on top of this, Asian characters are typically stereotyped to be super smart. I can't say that Reid was attempting to subvert this stereotype - I have no idea if that thought occurred to her and won't assume - but the point is, "positive" stereotyping is still stereotyping, and for this reason, it can actually be progressive or at least subversive to characterize Shane "negatively."
AND - there's the fact that I frankly want empathetic characters who exhibit traits that are traditionally considered negative or unempathetic. I sometimes want the character who has XYZ thing most people look down on to be a character that challenges the viewer to reassess their view of that trait. Stupidity, to use the harsh term here, is not a moral failure, and it's not something that should make us inherently dislike someone - it could be a positive thing to have a character who is, to use the harsh word again, stupid, and also be a character we are made to love.
AND AND - he's a fucking hockey player lmao like. Some of them are a little dumb ok.
So. I do not have a problem with Reid writing that Shane is unintelligent in a vacuum. That on its own is not what offends me about that list.
What offends me about that list is how she frames it. She is placing Shane in opposition to Ilya in that list. She is quite literally defining Shane by what he isn't in some of the list items, and then on top of that, defining him by how he compares to Ilya. She didn't have to do that. She could have just made lists of defining traits and not placed them in opposition to each other. She especially didn't need to define either of them by what they're not, which is extremely loaded language.
And then when you look at the list as a whole, and you view the traits she gives Ilya, and you view the traits she gives Shane, you notice that she is giving Ilya traits that we traditionally empathize with more, admire more, and are generally more interested in. She is making Ilya a character that we would traditionally view as having a lot to explore, and Shane a character that we would traditionally view as having significantly less to explore. None of those traits are inherently unexplorable, but most of the traits Ilya is given are the traits we see purposely explored in fiction a lot more often, and a lot more empathetically. Only the last in the list feels like it's possibly on an even playing field for me.
And it also becomes clear when looking at it that she did not pick any of Shane's traits because she was really trying to envision what Shane, gay, half-Asian, and growing up in Ottawa and playing an extremely white sport, would be like. Those are not the traits she deduced his character might have, and she didn't choose them for him because she was specifically thinking of him, Shane, this hypothetical person who if he existed in real life, would be influenced by real life. She didn't give any thought to that at all, or she would not say Shane doesn't have trauma.
And I can't know if this was consciously her process at the time, but when I read the books, it's hard not to conclude that she either chose those traits to contrast Ilya, or that was the purpose they eventually came to serve in her work. She didn't make Shane uncool or unintelligent or untraumatized because she wanted to explore his uncoolness, unintelligence or untrauma - she made him uncool and unintelligent and untraumatized because she wanted to explore Ilya's coolness, intelligence and trauma.
When I read that list it so clearly suggests to me that Ilya is her experiment and Shane is her control group.
THAT is why that list offends me.
what do you think shane and ilya were like as little kids? i've posted on my blog about how shane was probably that kid who would cry that his mom "forgot" him when he was dropped off at preschool. would probably also pick dandelions off the ground to give her as presents or something. i think ilya was one of those incredibly blunt children. if he didn't like you or thought you were ugly he would tell you with zero hesitation.
This is hard to answer because I just don't think it would be like, fun and fluffy and adorable, lmao. I also in general am more interested in childhood exploration when it isn't like, the quintessential view of childhood that's precious and sweet. So. Sorry if I'm a buzzkill.
But I think Shane probably had a really hard time making friends, and was probably outcasted up until his hockey talent was starting to show, and I think after that kids would probably express interest in him or want to be friends with him because of how good he was at hockey, and I think this probably influenced Shane's perception of hockey in some way that as an adult, he still doesn't realize. I think he probably felt very alienated as a half-Asian kid in Ottawa, and not really able to do anything about it, because his mother's solution to that alienation would just be to conform even more, assimilate even more, but that would only take Shane so far. This would be compounded further by being autistic and gay without knowing he's either. Again, I think hockey operated as a solution to this a lot of the time. It gave him a way to interact with other kids, learn masculinity and participate in masculinity in a way that felt intuitive to him, understand socializing and effectively learn to mask - initially, it provided him a way to navigate racism, queerphobia and ableism in a way it can't as much when he's older. I think hockey was escape for him, and that is also part of why he loved it - and part of why it doesn't feel the same anymore, now that he's older, because now, hockey, or at least NHL culture and NHL expectations and responsibilities, are the thing he needs to escape.
I think Ilya was quiet and obedient as a child because he had a shit dad and an older brother who either actively resented him or at that point just wasn't interested in him. I think hockey was grueling for him when he was younger, and something he detested in part because it was what he had to do for his father, but also something he hoped would earn him his father's approval if he was the best at it. But, I think others could sense his queerness long before he had any awareness of it himself, and that trumped anything else. I think only his mom made him feel truly loved and safe, like he could be himself around her, and he cared about her more than anything in the world. I think he was also ostracized as a kid, finding sanctuary in Svetlana, one of the other kids most ostracized in his school. They found solidarity in each other and stuck together despite school being hell for both of them. Then I think Ilya's mom died, and life became a lot worse a lot faster, and very quickly he had to adapt. This would have been around the same time he was entering puberty, and it would have been, in his eyes, time to become the type of man nobody can say shit about, and nobody can fuck with. So he does. He starts having sex and starts smoking and drinking and starts taking his hockey a lot more seriously both because now, he will truly need it to escape, and because it makes him a man, it makes him look tough, it helps him get strong, etc., and this leads him down the path to becoming the Ilya we see in Saskatchewan lighting his cigarette.
Not sure that was what you were hoping for from me but it is, at the end of the day, what I imagine their childhoods were like. So - sorry lol.
Not to be dramatic, but athletic ppl usually have heightened sex drives as well. So what do people think Shane was doing when not actively with Ilya?? Watching Cocomelon? 😔
I hate how people consider Shane a nun or something in this fandom... Also a nerd 💀 Like yea, it's book supported that he loves hockey vewy much, but that doesn't make him a nerd for knowing all about it... He's not sitting on the sideline and collecting hockey information as a side gig, it's his job!! Idk, fundamentally I don't have anything with the nerd thing, but knowing RR, it sounds like yet another stereotype...
Yeah that's kind of what started the porn conversation. Don't get me wrong, I really do think that Shane would have at some point watched porn the same way he watches a team he has to go against in an upcoming game and probably did try to learn from it like I absolutely buy that especially because when he was younger, his primary hookup was fucking Ilya and Shane was more than aware that Ilya had the upper hand on him with sexual experience and Shane would want to find a way to fill that gap. I get it and like it.
But Shane is not a Nerd. The way he is about hockey is the way majority of pro hockey players would be. Professional athletes study their opponents and their opposing teams' gameplay and their sport. Ilya is the fucking outlier there, not Shane.
And secondly Shane isn't a prude either, and he hasn't been inexperienced since the early years of hooking up with Ilya and I just want people to let the man be grown and horny the way they have no problem with Ilya being grown and horny.
Book wise, doesn't he literally put on a rugby match cause the guys are hot? Show wise, he owns a dildo. Ofc he's watched porn.

Best Lead Performer, Drama Series is….Hudson Williams!
My hatred for the tlg ending has always been strong but its become stronger once I realised that Ilya could have easily had the same ending in hr. The reasoning behind Ilya not going to Montreal was because they didn't have the cap space for him. And yet once the same problem appears for Shane and Ottawa the solution is to just take the pay cut. And considering RR's favouritism towards Ilya and disdain towards Shane, I guess Ilya not being captain and moving to the second line was unfathomable while for Shane it's a totally reasonable option for some fucking reason.
Lmao given how little she actually ended up caring about Ilya being Russian and the whole wanting a Canadian passport thing, she even could have ended HR with Shane going to Boston. I wouldn’t have liked that either, but the point is she had every option. Nothing about these books is realistic about the NHL. She has broken whatever world-building rules she feels like with anything else. She could do whatever the fuck she wanted. Her hands were not tied with who goes where and gives up what. This is what I mean about her like, very literally going out of her way to vilify Shane and to make Shane lose everything.
And a while back people got mad at me for considering making Shane become captain in my fic because how dare I take that from Ilya because Ilya earned it and deserved it and blah blah blah like this whole fandom affords so much more empathy to Ilya that the same things that are tragic when they happen to Ilya are just no big deal when they happen to Shane. The whole fandom mimics Reid’s pov on this, and I guess I shouldn’t be surprised because majority of people who read these books and didn’t like them would logically never join the fandom but it still infuriates me more people don’t see how fucked this is.
