This local photo of the aurora borealis was taken by photographer, Phillip Cochran last night. I'm afraid I slept through it but we're supposed to see it again tonight, so I get a second chance.

im no longer warning people about the sixties sfx in tos instead grabbing them by the shoulders and screaming there are aliens made of bubble wrap and latex and so much glitter. most of the episodes are blatantly filmed in southern california or three rotating sets featuring either pink orange or blue rocks. people jump off walls and pirouette when they get "punched". the ship beeps. a lot. too much for realism. spock goes into heat. dont worry about it. the point is there is no BUT. im not going to say "its very silly but its fun" ENOUGH! it's silly AND it's fun!!!!you will learn to love it all because when was the last time you looked at bubble wrap and a back garden and saw another world? remember how much fun it was? do you want to try again?!?!! do you want to play!!!!

Even so, the old effects hold up.

Especially when you consider (1) everyone's TV in 1966 was small and shitty, (2) the signal came through the air and was usually distorted, (3) color TV wasn't that prevalent yet, and (4) nobody ever suspected people would be taking these episodes apart frame by frame in the year 2025 looking for imperfection.

Seriously. These shows were expected to air exactly twice, once in prime time then again as a summer rerun. The idea of syndication pretty much didn't exist prior to Star Trek.

VHS didn't exist. Everyone assumed the silly 3-season space adventure would disappear from public memory.

And yet.

These shows look good on giant 65" screens, with 100% fidelity. Even without the stupid 'remaster' from 2006.

Pretty amazing for a show shot at a breakneck pace (one week filming, one week post production) with a limited budget on 1960s hardware, fighting their own network every step of the way.

I say this as someone who unironically loves community theater and low budget improv and impossible anime fashion and surrealist films, but digital effects have really fucked up our relationship with suspension of disbelief.

"I can see the zipper on that monster costume!" So? You still scream when an underpaid teenager leaps out from a darkened corner in a "haunted corn maze".

"The rocks are obviously spray painted papier-mache!" So?? The actors went to great pains to pantomime dragging something very heavy.

"That's not how [XYZ thing] REALLY works!" So??? With all love from a fellow autistic pedant, have you considered that what the writers wanted you to grapple with is not [XYZ] itself but [QRS thing that makes corporate media uncomfortable like colonialism or economic inequality]?

In my case I simply love the aesthetic. TOS is different to every other star trek show in two things:

It's hopeful

It's bright and colourful

And I think these two elements of the show lift each other up perfectly. I wouldn't want it any other way. I want to imagine a future that is hopeful and bright and colourful
